I had the good fortune of discovering Thornhill through this album first. Then I saw all the fans backlash about it being such a departure from the Dark Pool. Gave that a listen and liked that too. Made me appreciate them so much more as artists/creators. They’re wearing their Deftones and 80’s/90’s influences on their sleeves on this one and I’m a sucker for it because I love Deftones and am in my thirties. Love Heroine, love The Dark Pool. Can’t wait to see what they do next.

Off the back of The Dark Pool, I wasn't totally thrilled when the singles for Heroine dropped. I didn't hate them, but I definitely was on the fence. It felt like such a left turn from what Thornhill were known for at first. My first listen through the album was a lot like your reaction here-some of it good, some of it just not doing anything for me. After some time and a handful more listens through, I'm actually really enjoying most of the album. The singles that I was initially apprehensive about are ironically now my favorite tracks. It's so hard to separate this from The Dark Pool, but I think it's a really good piece of music once you can do that. That being said, you can still here some Dark Pool creeping through here and there which is nice. I'm still not a fan of the last 2 tracks on this though. Both of them fall a bit flat compared to the rest of the album imo, especially since they have to follow Raw.

I actually had to listen to The Dark Pool like 5 times to get into it, and I kept returning mostly because of the awesome cover. I had a reaction akin to yours upon first hearing the singles, but I really love Heroine no less than TDP at this point. I think you really have to get into the vibe. TDP is very emotional and personal, you have to really get into the lyrics. With Heroine, I just put it on, kinda put my focus on the instrumentals over the vocals, and feel immersed in this Hollywood atmosphere, with this twisted outlook on love and sex and success and so on. I am not sure whether I'll keep coming back to Heroine in a few years, but at the same time, I can count the number of albums that elicited such emotion from me on my fingers.

I entirely get the disappointment, but I hope it clicks eventually after a few listens. I absolutely loved "TDP" and I also love "Heroine." I instantly was excited to hear the new, experimental sound. Possibly AOTY for me, its been on repeat since day 1

Someone else said it pretty perfectly, it’s like if Muse and Deftones had a baby and didn’t give it enough love. I for one really liked it, this album was pretty much my introduction to Thornhill but I went back and listened to The Dark Pool and I can honestly see an evolution of that sound in Heroine. FFO The Dark Pool you need to listen to Stellar Circuits- Ways we haunt album. I get very similar vibes to that and it was released a year prior to TDP.

Just love this album, with each listen I like it even more! Although The Dark Pool is one of my all time favourites I'm glad they didn't just release 2.0. The riffs on Heroine are amazing and the vocals are incredible. Jacob's range and vocal styles bring the band to a different dimension, at times very theatrical. I listened to a recent interview with him and he said he was not influenced by muse or Deftones (in fact has not listened to them). He was in fact inspired by Justin Timberlake. I have to admit one of my guilty pop music pleasures is Justin so it's suiting that I'm loving this album. Glad you could get some of the review on RU-vid.

nah, hands down aoty for me hahaha although i understand why people aren't a huge fan. i just love hearing bands develop their own sound and - despite the obvious deftones influence - this album feels like exactly what thornhill want to be. the way they've written the vocals and the tracks around the vocals fits jacobs style perfectly, and lyrically it's INCREDIBLE. if you pick up or look at a physical copy, all of the tracks are given context in the form of a film script to give you insight into the stories, just adding an extra depth to the record. I would agree that it isn't a metalcore record, but that doesn't matter to me cuz i still enjoyed every second of it and i think its a masterpiece in songwriting and storytelling. so so so so sooooo excited to see them with bury tomorrow in october

I chose this over The Dark Pool any day. The Dark Pool is a beast if an album…But this is thornhill’s true sound , and they do it so well, yeah its not the absolute most original , but its more unique than the dark pool will ever be and they pull it off. But i 100% why people are so attached to the dark pool cause its a nearly perfect album.

At first listen I was conflicted but after a few listens it did grow on me similar to most comments here. However, is it safe to say an album can "ungrow" on me? This was all I was listening to for like 2 days and then I dropped it. Casanova and parts of Raw and Hollywood are the ones I seem to go back to and I think it's because I just yearn for more upbeat Thornhill. I've never been a fan of shoegaze or any mellow rock albums so that may just be my personal bias. No question that this is an amazing for the people who enjoy those genres but it's having a hard time retaining my attention.

i don’t understand how people don’t like arkangel. Also regarding the album- If anything the dark pool had more straight forward song structures. for what it is i enjoyed this album, a lot of singles were better in the context of the album. Agreed! Literally the same for me, although TDP is one hell of an album, the singles when they came out i really liked but it didn't connect with me immediately. When the full album came out i was very surprised and it instantly became one of my favourite albums in recent memory. But the singles from this album instantly resonated with me, especially Arkangel which is such a different sexy vibe imo. the 2000's energy is indeed big with this one. But i still understand why people wouldn't necessarily like this album, it's a big change but it's still got that ethereal vibe to it which i don't see people catch up on

I think I lucked out by discovering Thornhill through after they released Hollywood. My first experience of the band was cycling through Casanova, Arkangel, and Hollywood. After thoroughly enjoying them, I went back to TDP and was thoroughly shocked that it was the same band. I fell in love with TDP (much like you did), but by being exposed to this newer, dreamy, sexy sound first, it was very easy for me to disconnect the band from their previous work. I prefer TDP to Heroine, but having said that, Heroine may be my AOTY at the moment, and I view them as basically done by two different bands given how drastically different the styles were. But for people who cannot separate the artists from their previous work, I can understand why this album is just not working for them. It has happened to a lot of bands, like Linkin Park

Let me give you a little bit of a different perspective. I never heard Thornhill until I heard this album. I am a huge Deftones fan but, their last couple records have been very underwhelming. When I heard this I was extremely excited because it sounded like a really good, heavy Deftones record. When I went back and listened to the rest of Thornhill's catalog I was a little disappointed in that they didn't sound as much like this one. I have since grown to like Dark Pools and the E.P. but for different reasons. I really dig Herione, it has been on repeat, especially The Hellfire Club. That song grabs you by the feels.

I completely agree with Drew. Like most of the comments, I found this album a complete departure from the previous to the point that it sounds like a different band. The vocal effects are too overwhelming and imo unnecessary for such a great singer! Listening to this album you would think this singer is weak due to the effects and mixing. The dark pool was much cleaner and respectful of his vocal abilities. The music composition is also a complete departure from the previous album and that’s why I feel this album much more mainstream and divisive.
