Released 3/19/1986, Baltron for Famicom is an original and exclusive horizontal shooter developed by Shouei and published by Toei Animation. Similar to Defender in some respects, you reverse direction to battle enemies from left to right or vice versa. Warp or use flash bombs, but these consume precious fuel. You must refuel and make it to the end of a very large stage to confront the entity known as Baltron. If you defeat it, the stage loops with a different color background.
I wonder if Baltron was going to be a Toei Animation television show at some point? If I had to guess why it never made it as a show or a game for the NES, it's because the similarities to the Star Wars franchise are too overt (see the opening narrative). A koala icon grants you an extra life, which may have been a nod to the Ewoks and perhaps a character from a show that never happened. Beyond the fact that it's a bit derivative of other games and movies, Baltron is a decent horizontal shooter.
I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES original controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
