Behind the Name of the Parsha: Operation Desert Storm
Bamidbar means In The Desert - the Sinai Desert where the Torah was given.
This portion is always read right before Shavuot which is the holiday on which the Torah was given.
Just as the desert did not belong to any country or civilization, so to is Torah available to all. No one person has more ownership over it than another. And of course no matter where we find ourselves, even if it's a spiritual desert, we have the ability to aquire and practice Torah.
Also, unlike a civilized area, where when one encounters a new idea they first evaluate if it's an acceptable social norm.. In a desert we don't make those calculations, enabling the approach we are supposed to have with Torah, of נעשה ונשמע - first doing, and then doing our best to understand. We must influence our environment, instead of our environment influencing us.
Another lesson from the Torah being given in the desert is to teach us the importance of sharing Torah with those who currently find themselves in a spiritual desert. And empower them to turn their desert into a Torah civilized environment.
