Do you think Drag Queens should be banned from Pride Events?
Does the sight of a drag queen performing on a Pride stage "offend you?" "Confuse you?" Make you "uncomfortable?"
Do you think the organizers of Glasgow Free Pride have "lost their marbles?"
The Glasgow Free Pride is a splinter group from the main Glasgow Pride which DOES welcome drag performers.
UPDATE!!! GLASGOW FREE PRIDE HAVE APOLOGIZED & CHANGED THEIR POLICY.....freeprideglasgow.wordpress.co...

At Free Pride we hope to create a safe space for all people within the LGBTQIA+ community. We understand that sometimes this will disappoint some people within the community, however our priority is always to put the needs of the most marginalised groups within our community first.
This is why, after much discussion, the trans and non binary caucus decided not to have drag acts perform at the event. This does not mean that people of any gender can’t wear what they want to the event, we simply won’t be having any self-described drag acts perform at our Free Pride Event on the 22nd August. We hope people can understand and support our decision. However we feel it important to fully explain why we came this decision.
The decision was taken by transgender individuals who were uncomfortable with having drag performances at the event. It was felt that it would make some of those who were transgender or questioning their gender uncomfortable. It was felt by the group within the Trans/Non Binary Caucus that some drag performance, particularly cis drag, hinges on the social view of gender and making it into a joke, however transgender individuals do not feel as though their gender identity is a joke. This can particularly difficult for those who are not out and still present as the gender they were assigned at birth. While it was discussed whether we could have trans drag acts perform, it was agreed that as it would not be appropriate to ask any prospective drag acts whether or not they identified as trans. It was therefore decided that having no drag acts perform would be the best option as it would mean no-one would feel pressured to out themselves. This also adheres to our Safer Spaces Policy, where we ask that no-one assume anyone else’s gender identity, and to always ask people’s pronouns.
We would like to reaffirm that this is not to say that we do not want gender expression, which we do encourage, at our event. We encourage everyone to wear what they want and express their gender however they please! There will be no policing of peoples gender identity. We will be re-inforcing our safer spaces policy at the event and asking that no-one assume anyone else gender and remember to always ask pronouns.
Free Pride is intended to be a safe space for all individuals. It is also intended to bring a new vibrant change to Glasgow’s LGBTQIA community; putting marginalised people at its heart.
Free Pride

I grew up in an era that was very repressed and heavily censored. A lot of people spent a good part of their lives fighting that and obtaining the freedom of expression we have now. As an artist, after many years of being careful about what images I created, I finally took the steps and began painting scenes of what I wanted to, scenes that made me feel good. My art turned out to be quite popular. Then, during the past few years I started getting complaints about my work from the political types or I guess they now go by "social justice warriors", that my art was too "specific", that it strongly showed people having identities, such as gender and sexual orientation and that the concept of people being gay or homosexual is wrong (it is?). When I tried to get an idea of what they wanted instead, what my critics seem to want were scenes where everyone looked assimilated, blended and vague and no one showed a hit of any identity or sexual orientation. Kind of bizarre imagery, like a bunch of uniform wearing Borg clones happily serving the global corporate structure. It was also communicated to me that like the drag queens, my wicked gay art is not welcome in the alphabet soup grouping. My heart wasn't into doing bland nothingness, so I decided that if gay little old me is not welcome in the alphabet soup grouping, then I am not a part of that and don't belong with it. So I will continue to be true to myself and paint what I want and stay away from the alphabet soup. The thing is, the moment people are told they CAN'T do something indicates the moment something is very wrong. I think the people handing down these missives seem to be trying turn the gay community into a beige "heterosexual light" role playing thing. I believe they only way they will be truly happy is to construct a North Korea like society where everyone is told to look exactly alike and wears a uniform. I've also known some of these extremely politically sensitive people to be very close to socially conservative individuals including those on the religious right, which might explain a lot. Tyranny is tyranny, regardless of who dishes it out. Imagine if the statement read, the gay caucus decided that trans/non binary individuals would be banned from the event because that sort of thing made certain individuals uncomfortable. Just saying…

As a smart gay teen, I was ridiculed and ostracized. Over the years I gradually grayed, beiged, unfemmed, and stopped "casting my pearls before swine," so to speak. Doing this got rid of the razzing, and even opened doors to associate with the same kind of people whose approval I thought I needed. Ultimately, however, I realized such people live to criticize others and have no intention of growing up. So now, once I am convinced that person will not control his rants, I place a lot of space between us-I'd much rather eat lunch alone. Besides that, an empty chair at my table for 2 might get filled with much better company! By the way, Charlie, you're brilliant, and I love what you do, how you do it, and why you do it.

I really still can't get my head around this Charlie. I live in Edinburgh and I know for a fact that Scotland as a whole in the gay community support and love our drag queens who grace our stages and dance floors and mingle amongst us spreading messages of love, safe sex and one liners I wish I could repeat in church on a Sunday to the non drag queen believers out there. August sees the millionth return to the Edinburgh fringe of the lady boys and thousands flock to see this wonderful show including many of my relatives over the years and none I know so far have left questioning their identity and sexuality (well not that I know off although my uncle did book a trip to Thailand and since hasn't return) but seriously good on you Charlie for speaking up. You have brought many a laugh to our parties with your videos and humour and I thank you from the bottom of my heart as a gay man. I support the drag queens and if there is anything we can do..... then let us all know. x

I think it also comes down to the huge internal homophobia that exists in the scene . Being camp is frowned upon , being muscular or a "gym bunny" is frowned upon , being overweight is frowned upon , being thin is frowned upon ..... You get my drift . No one seems to be able to be them selves without others berating them for their looks or voice etc

Colin Andrew-Craig The new FREE PRIDE was organized by students with good intentions but a shacking lack of common sense. Gender non conforming people banning other Gender non conforming people from a PRIDE event? Of course it was going to cause outrage and indignation and quite a few face palms.. They've apologized and hopefully learned something as they move forward.

I think people in general nowadays are so willing to be offended over everything. I think Drag Queens are very important to the LGBT community. For me, queens like RuPaul, Charlie Hides, Lady Bunny, Kennedy Davenport and Pearl have really helped me understand who I am as a person and I see them figures of empowerment. Many other gay youths like me feel this way too and so I think it's stupid to ban them from pride because of this small minority who might be offended.

Very well said Charilie! I'd like to add that I've known trans people who were inspired, and made more comfortable, by the presence of drag queens at gay clubs and events. Drag artists have always blurred the visible lines of gender, and for someone who's identifying differently or questioning, I'm sure it must feel safer to "dress up" a little around those who dress up a lot. ;)

Well, considering the fact that they care so much about someone might get uncomfortable maybe they shouldn't do any pride event at all? After all there are many people uncomfortable with that... Drag Queen performances are, and have been part of LGBT community since forever, and I think it's simply astonishing that somebody would ban them on such an event! It is ridiculous! I'm from Poland and watching drag queen performances here, where the country and society is very homophobic was one of the things that encouraged me to be more open about myself. There was no pressure. I simply adored the courage it takes and how much time and preparation they put into it all. I just don't understand their argument at all... it seems to me that it's based on one person's unfortunate experience. All in all, I hope they will see their mistake.

I blame Carmen... Electra. (it's a joke, if you didn't get it, you weren't around on the "ban the -Word" debacle, it's ok...) Here's the thing: I get it... Some people are ignorant. They live their selfish lives in a bubble of their own making looking only at their side of things and not at the other. That's why some trans people hate drag-queens and think them misogynistic (along with some cis women too), and why some drag-performers hate trans people (and bio-queens) getting on a stage and doing drag. This is, clearly, wrong in both sides. Trans and drag has always gone hand in hand since drag appeared (outside of theater plays, that is). Trans people had a place to feel secure and explore their identity on a stage while making a semblance of an income so not to be only dependent on prostitution if they were transitioning, and drag-queens and kings were more than welcoming, or maybe it was even the other way around! So much so that they were and still are often confused. If this is a backlash to that confusion, then it is as idiotic as those that believe that drag and trans are the same thing. If this is pandering to a loud minority of offended people who don't know the first fucking thing about their own cultural history, it's offensive to me and I think the whole of human intelligence. If this is a marketing scheme, it's a bad one. If this is actually someones idea of fairness or justice or social karma or whatever, just... just... no. What this isn't, tho, is Pride. Very well said, Charlie. I tip my hat to you (the sparkly fedora one I rarely use).

The trans an non binary caucus raise an interesting point of discussion. However, in my experience, which is different from theirs, Drags have a cultural meaning that is both related and different in the gender identity discussion. And their relevance in the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, it does not feel as the ban is an appropriate move. Although, if there is anyone that could explain to me the caucus position, I'd greatly appreciate it. That being said, I simply adore your work Charlie!

The distinction between a man who dresses as a woman being a form of expression and a Transgender woman being the very identity of a person must be understood. If the lgbtqia community cannot understand and respect the distinction than how can we expect the world as a whole to understand and embrace us.

I am a big fan of drag, we are all drag queens. It seems some forms of drag are more interesting than others. It seems that the more appreciated forms of drag such as the drag Charlie does is firmly part of particularly the male gay community and should be honored at pride events. But it seems there is some misunderstanding in a lot of people’s minds between a man who dresses as a woman and particularly “Transgender” women. The difference is a drag queen dresses as a woman but it is not his soul identity, and a transgender woman’s soul identity is female. Even when the trans woman appears to be male or is in male drag she is still a woman. The world doesn’t work the way most people think. And in order for us to be a functioning community we need to understand and embrace the differences. Charlie when you say transgender try not to say it with a hint of lemon. Nicoco

I think they were trying to avoid transmisognistic performances. Drag Queens are allowed to go, dressed however they want! I do feel like banning drag performances was harsh, but an effort needs to be made to protect trans women. As you mentioned in your video, trans women, who identified as drag queens prior to having the language to describe themselves as such, basically started the stonewall riots. So both groups are important to include, but no group should be there in the expense of the other.

Iris Moth Isis, the very notion that one "gender non conforming group" would consider banning another "gender non conforming group" is hugely hypocritical. Its NOT in the spirit of Pride. The organizers could have simply invited act that they thought would be entertaining and suitable for their event. To PUBLICLY lump all "self identifying drag queens" into one problematic category is laughable and dare I say..... OFFENSIVE!

It's shitty. But, I feel like cis male drag queens being shitty to trans women is such a cancer in the community. Being shitty to trans women is also not in the spirit of pride. And yes, not all drag queens are, but alot of the most visible and prominent performers are. (RuPaul for example). I feel like they should have just screened drag performers with a panel that has expertise on gender and trans politics. Therefore, everyone could be happy.

May as well ban gay men from pride, they may make others feel uncomfortable. Banning drag from pride?? That shows no PRIDE for ones community.

This could easily be summed up by: #Triggered and #TriggerWarnings . It's just another example of PC culture going way OTT.

Disgraceful.. Glasgow "Free" Pride should not be attended by anyone.. Also, they should PROBABLY rename it.. seeing as the word "Free" doesn't seem to be fit this event anymore. I say organize your own events and literally reroute everyone who would be going to Glasgow Pride to yours. ^^; Peace and Love!
