I used to love going there. Haven't been back since '05. With all of the over commercialization it has lost it's appeal. And with all of the massive crowds with bad attitudes all of the local workers have lost their "Country Charm" (can't blame them). I watch EA constantly and every time I remind myself to not come back.

It’s my personal opinion they are wanting to push the Rod Run out completely. It’s the younger people coming up there with the jacked up diesel trucks causing the problems. It’s just like with the gun issue, don’t punish the criminal take guns from everyone. Instead of doing something about the big diesel trucks, they’ll just ruin it for everyone.

The diesel truck shows are taking place in the city of Sevierville. Thats where the slammedenough car show was at also. When the shows are over at night . Sevierville has the money from the main events , but they all migrate to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg . Leaving the other towns to have to deal with the aftermath.

The old Rod and Custom show in Lincoln, Ne was killed by the end of the magazine. Then memorial event held every year started running into issues in Lincoln Nebraska due to younger kids thinking it was ok for their shitbox to be raced around pulling sideshow BS. A few years back, a kid in a sho Taurus blasted an intersection at 75-85mph, hit a car turning into the intersection. He killed the two girls in that car, and his sho Taurus was sent into a crowd watching the cars cruising the Main Street for people cruising lawfully. Hurt another 15 people and killed a kid. It’s stupidity like that that is killing the automotive culture.

Apparently, TDOT and city management don't understand how much tourism money these car shows generate. These "rod runs" have been ongoing since I was a young man during the 1970s, and in recent years there have been Jeep weekends. The businesses are not advertising vehicles for sale, thus there is no violation of the lease agreement. TDOT is attempting to violate the 1st Amendment by prohibiting car owners from placing For Sale signs in their vehicles. Whether these signs are only visible when the vehicles are driving on the roads or when parked, the owner of a vehicle has the right to display such a notice.

@jedmaga3025
@jedmaga3025 6 месяцев назад
The issue of traffic flow is a constant problem for Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg... only one main road to get in and get out. Doesn't matter the event; if the event or season (i.e. fall or Christmas) has a large draw the traffic is a complete cluster and you should plan a picnic meal because you're going to be there for a while. Personally we avoid PG and Gatlinburg as it's been over developed without improving the road entry/exit avenues to the towns.

The problem isnt the rod run its the younger generation. Also Gatlinburg, pigeon Forge, and Sevierville to me might be to blame. The reason i say that is I work in town and to me if for just that weekend only, if they stopped the samples at all distilleries and wineries it would cut back some. They did a study on the amount of alcohol that you can sample is way over the legal limit if your driving or in public

It is not the younger generation as a whole. I'm 21. And I am into all types of cars, trucks, bikes, etc. I went down to pigeon forge last year for Slammedenuff. 70% of ppl that are into those type of cars are the younger generation. And there was an issue with that event too. With that being said. The ppl that actually go for the event and to just simply hang out and have fun (which is 98% of us) are there just to do that. So everyone needs to put their big boy pants on and accept the fact that it isn't "tHe nEw gEneRaTiOn " causing the problem. That's what they want, anyway, absolute control and high taxes, fees, etc. Government planners are never happy with a good amount of revenue that comes in from the businesses that these cars park in front of. Enthusiasts bring money into the state, but now the government has to cultivate even more taxation with ordinances.

Many thoughts on this one. First, the RRs dates are released well in advance, so I would think locals could plan around it. I live on Florida’s Space Coast and the launch frequency has increased dramatically in the last few years. Launch traffic is horrible in the surrounding towns like Titusville, Cocoa Beach, and Merritt Island. We get used to it and make adjustments accordingly to get to and from the Space Center. As far as the younger truck crowd ruining things, I really hate to make it a generational issue. I will say, I see the same behavior at some local car events and it really makes me wonder. I’m really trying to not be the ‘get off my lawn’ guy. Clearly the local municipalities believe they are losing tax revenue on vehicles sales, but get real, they don’t get it for an out of state internet sale either. There’s a lot of good in Tennessee, but there’s a lot of just plain dumb laws there too. I mean dry counties? This is 2024 for Pete’s sake.

It was a horrible existence living and working during these events taking upwards of 3 hours or longer just to get to work on time when I only live 6 miles from work and on top of that I'm not making one extra cent for sitting in all that traffic burning all that extra gas just so a bunch of people can come look at the exact same cars several times a year every year. For these reasons I moved from pigeon forge and never looked back.

Been going to the rod runs since early 70's in Gatlinburg first, and now Pigeon Forge, and some fans get a little rowdy, but not all, the first one in Gatlinburg we went to, we drove to Pigeon Forge in 74 I believe, it was only a 4 lane highway, not even a place to use the bathroom, these events have made it grow like that, so now they don't want this business, that little show at leconte center, I wouldn't even go there for that, and the motels wouldn't be full, and they couldn't charge 300 plus for one night, so there you go, the truth hurts.

Just looked it up when you go to the distilleries the cups are the communion cups which hold anywhere from .5 ounce to .75. Ole Smokey alone is about 4-5 ounces sampled at it by the time you leave. Then you have Sugarland, Tennessee Shine, and all the wine tasting so by the time you are done you shouldn't even be out. Gatlinburg alone probably has 13 places you can sample alcohol. This does not include pigeon forge at the old mill or the island.

The first Rod Run was in 1979 in Gatlinburg. It was mostly quite with a few drunks. Highway patrol came out at midnight and said we're shutting it down. About that time state troopers started coming out of all the side streets and Yes it was shut down. I don't remember when it moved to Pigeon Forge but it was shortly thereafter. Oh to be young and not quite as stupid as back then but still have good time.

I live in a small city, just northwest of Chicago, and where I live, it is unlawful to place a FOR SALE sign in any vehicle that is parked on the streets, but not unlawful to place the same sign in any vehicle parked in a homeowner's driveway, or other property with the owner's permission. Do I like these restrictions??? NO, in fact I believe that they are nothing less than legalized invasion of property, and obviously, a revenue generator. As the owner of a vehicle, you do have an expected level of privacy in your vehicle, not as great a level as a homeowner, but it still does exist.I completely understand the issues with the crimes that often come along with events like this, Sturgis being one of the oldest and biggest events like this, is certainly no stranger to crime and other issues.

Backed in my driveway, all complete, saving money for an engine and transmission rebuild. Because someone anonymously complained. The Rod Runs have been THE event of our year, as we have always celebrated our wedding anniversary which falls in line with it every year the last 15 years. We could celebrate it anywhere but we choose to do it there for a number of reasons. We have never went to the center. We have always just enjoyed getting out walking and viewing the cars ourselves with the convenience to shop and eat along the way. I agree with a few of the other comments that its definitely changed over the years. The younger generation is definitely more noticeable. We've always enjoyed that swap meet atmosphere. We've enjoyed countless conversations with owners over the time and energy put into their classics. Weve enjoyed year after year seeing new classics and finding project cars we share interests in. The shift in that atmosphere, however it started, has went from that to more of a party feel after the sun goes down. Im not a huge fan of being challenged by kids my own kids ages to lift my shirt or being gropped while walking around by inebriated individuals my kids age. But i deal with it as it happens and move on. Id love more than anything to see it get back to what it was 20 years ago but there are alot of issues more pressing that needs addressed than the vehicles lining the patkway for sale. I know the locals have valid concerns and i totally understand. Im just not sure it would be beneficial for the event itself to be strictly confined to the LeConte Center. Alot of people wouldnt want to pay the price. Like us, they would be less pursuaded to attend there not having the ability to shop or have lunch or dinner in a sit down resteraunt. We enjoy the overall experience of shopping, seeing all the amazing classic cars, looking for a deal on a project car we have in mind, socializing with other enthusiasts however long we want to, and having the ability to be out walking the strip an entire day if we want to without having to break it down. I feel like its just part of the experience and has been since weve been going and would hate to see that end. There are solutions to accommodate everyone from the car sellers to the locals. It takes sitting down and brainstorming ideas to get to that, which doesnt seem to happen.

The truth is, the small business owners, employees and other locals have grown to hate the event in recent years. They don't have to have it for revenue. The GB/PF area will still be packed those weeks even if Rod Run disappeared forever. The participants don't spend as much money and take up valuable parking space that could be used by customers wanting to actually spend money in their businesses. Employees at these businesses continually make it known that they get treated more poorly by customers during these two events than any other time of the year. Honestly, on a local scale, the only people that want it to stay are the major cooperations and the out of town people that own short term rentals (airbnb). Neither of which have to actually deal with anything going on down there personally.

My opinion based on info in this video. TDOT ( the state) is going to use the excuse of traffic safety and beaufication and such. The truth is probably more in line of missing out on tax revenue since these are person to person sales and not thru licensed dealers that would have to collect taxes.

I'm glad that somebody has addressed this issue in a public forum. As an area resident who has to travel to work and all the other normal things everyone else does these events are a nightmare for us. The whole area is gridlocked. It can take more than an hour to get from point A to B when normally might take fifteen minutes. Emergency responders can't get to calls. This has got out of control. I've said that a venue should be created to put ALL of these people away from the Parkway. LaConte Center just is not big enough. Rod Run has simply outgrown it years ago. I don't know where this place would be but I wish they would make it and enforce the laws about selling and loitering along the Parkway businesses. To me every single one of those selling cars and sitting watching people drive by are loiterers and furthermore if anyone is going to sell anything outside of LaConte in a public area they need to have a permit to do so. If I was City of Pigeon Forge it would cost a hefty amount to obtain that permit.

I don’t know how you guys decide on where the main show gets parking or anything so I know I might not be much help. But with that said we have a huge car show every year in the fall in Gas City Indiana called the Ducktail Run. It brings in a few thousand cars every year and even more spectators to it. What they have is a year restriction to 1972 or older or vehicle must be highly modified to even be able to register to get into it. They have the show at the community park and it’s really nice. I think what they’re able to do with the year restriction is they eliminate most( but not all) the riffraff and trouble makers. Now I’ve seen a few fights break out after dark and is not perfect by no means and the local law enforcement do an excellent job of patrolling and getting a handle on situations. They also patrol outside of the park heavily to keep people under control. They don’t tolerate burnouts and definitely no doughnuts in parking lots. The day they allow the hellcat crowd in will be the last time I attend. I know not all of the bought car guys are all bad but I haven’t been to a open cruise in where I haven’t seen a hellcat, rt, srt , new Camaro, etc so starved for attention leaving sideways sometimes losing control all together and getting into altercations. When I think of a rod and custom show, I’m not thinking of anything with a warranty or blows black smoke that has gps and 24's on it. and they have a specific location in the park for swap meet and cars for sale.

I was born and raised across the mountain in NC and can remember the old days when folks had fun there, but now it's a disgusting hassle to even go there any time of year. It took me three and a half hours to get across the Smokies a couple of summers back and it wasn't even rod run and that's only at most a 45 minute cruise. They've started requiring parking passes due to so many tourists illegally parking on the sides of roadways down the parkway that it's ruined the landscape in areas and sent flocks of people walking in dangerous curves to trails and the next "mountains are calling" selfie location. Then there's the tiny towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge which I really used to love visiting, but no more. Helen, Georgia is the same way as well as towns like Franklin and Asheville. Locals such as myself are truly sick of all this and can't afford to move. It's sad how things have changed since social media makes our small towns look like the last Eden and the "move here invasion" that's ruined our beloved Appalachian Mountains where our heritage and landscape is dying. Then there's the fact that 99% of all outsiders look down on us and are very rude, so locals return the favor. My 7 generations local heritage and half Cherokee Appalachian pride will never die until I do.

According to the video, yes. I feel this law is being misinterpreted, as usual. The law is for the business selling or advertising, not private citizens. The only legal leg I see here is the businesses "selling" parking spots, because that would be a sublease, of the sublease, of the sublease, of the sublease, making the car owner responsible for the law in question. As far as getting rid of the Rod Run, I guess like Helen, GA, they don't like money. That's 75,000 (twice a year) people spending money that they want to go elsewhere.

The State just wants tax money from the sale. Here in Georgia they call it curb stoning. A business is not allowed to let an individual sell a vehicle on heir business lot unless it is their vehicle. Its not really enforced, but several used car dealers had stickers made up and went around putting them on those cars which led to Police getting involved by the vehicle owner complaining about a sticker on their window. I agree with you, most don't even go put their car in the show, they just come to hang out on the strip. I don't see any issue and you are right. The government is way too greedy and should let the people be left alone there is no harm in what the rod run does and places would stop getting profits from the rod run and the city would loose out on extra tax dollars going into the economy that helps the state

What’s the point? I don’t think the state has considered special events nor the spirit of this code/rule. Maybe they should consider selling permits for a couple of bucks to allow sales and use that money to support law enforcement with additional security. The annual Sturgis rally is a good example as far as the “lawlessness” issue you’re always going to have that problem when you jam thousands of people into a small area for a short time. Arrange for nearby municipalities and counties to provide additional law enforcement during the Run.

If We the People Paid for the Road how does tenn make a claim to it? Tenn is a piece of paper only.

For more leverage perhaps you should enlist the assistance of the business owners along that stretch of road to help negotiate with the lawmakers to get that restriction lifted.

People can still put for sale signs in cars that’s on the property of the motel . Anything next to the side walk is what the state controls unless they have made a new law that they control all of the property in the city limits

I used to go to both every year and there were always a few bad apples messing thigs up. The current down turn in society and lawless behavior is not the run itself but the kind of people that go there. I stopped going 10 years ago just because of the traffic and lawless behavior.

Same here. I go for one day now, walk around and then come back home. It's very expensive to stay in and around PF. Plus, traffic and stupid behavior have made it more of a pain in the butt than fun.

My son and I have been attending this rod run since he was about 3 years old. He will be 22 next rod run in April. WE LOVE IT! We leave our car at the motel and bike it. We had a tandem bike when he was smaller. Putting all the cars for sale in one area is nothing less than a money grab by tax collectors. You can’t stop it and the police aren’t going to enforce it. They are too busy with real crimes.

I'm sorry, but the ROAD is leased, not the parking lot off of it. The parking lot is private property. How can the state or even city even logically try to enforce this law?
