note: this song(version) isn't remotely anti-th or anti-banana-man.
it's essentially a needlessly overdramatic argument between myself and a past version of myself, as well as between myself and people who refuse to acknowledge that things can be good but have problems. banana man is a good song. it has problems.

LYRICS:
- new, original lyrics indicated by [] square brackets-
- concurrent lyrics indicated by () parentheses -
Ladies and gentlemen, Colonel P.T Chester Whitmore is proud to present:
Bung Vulchungo and the Zimbabwe Songbirds.
Do you see Banana Man?
hopping over on the white hot sand.
Here he comes with some for me,
[this manifestation of our apathy.]
(One, two, three, four.)
Banana Man, we want a ton.
Give us double and a bonus one.
Give me more for all my friends.
This banana flow will never end.
Do you want a banana?
Peel it down and go mm mm, mm, mmmm.
Do you want a banana?
This banana's for you.
[You're the cattle, I'm the free.
It's about whatever you want it to be.
And if you dare to disagree,
surely you're the one resembling sheep.
That which is funny can't be wrong.
It can't be racist if I like the song.
Silly, stupid, quirky, bright.
All these attributes mean that I'm right.]
Do you want a banana?
[Choke it down and go mm mm, mm, mmmm.]
Do you want a banana?
This banana for you.
[He says]
"look you, you're too uptight you know.
You could laugh and kick it back and go (weeee!)
but without a rhythm or a rhyme,
you do not banana all the time.
Fly away from city on the run.
Try to make a little fun."
[So I say
"what's this, f**king 1959?
With the painted face and googly eyes?
And the accent of the Caribbean?
And the imitation simian?
Weren't you born and raised in Michigan?
This banana's gotta stop."]
[Forget all your morals and go with the flow.
Forget about the bad, the good is all you know.
And forget about the voice that's lying deep inside,
the one that's screaming and screeching proclaiming wrong and right.]
And then forget about banana when it's stuck in your throat,
and when it makes you wanna bellow but you're stuck in a choke.
And then forget about the yellow from the beckoning man,
who makes you take another one and make a mock of your plan.
Bungale, bungalo.
[Conscience begone in catchy notes.]
Ummmmmmmmmmmm.
Shhhhhhh...
[Well it's 3am and I'm online again,
arguing with someone I don't know.
I shouldn't feel so strongly but I can't let this go.]
[The moral of this story is, it's]
(Tomorrow morning, on the plane.)
[perfectly fine to wear rose-tinted lenses,]
(No banana make you go insane.)
[but don't neglect your other senses,]
(Floating back to busy town.)
[lest you finally face the consequences.]
(No banana make you want to frown.)
Do you want a banana?
Peel it down and go mm mm, mm, mmmm.
Do you want a banana?
This banana's for...
...you.

So, any clown makeup is racist now, huh? It's a song about literally going bananas, they used a carribian accent because thats what most tropical style songs are sung in. There's recognizing racism in past media, but there's also digging for racism where there is none as well.

Hey! I think you've slightly misread my initial intention with this song. Your criticisms are obviously fair, it'll never be my place to tell you what to think, but I feel like it's worth elaborating a little bit. And apologies in advance. This kind of comment shows up all the time and you just happen to be the poor bastard that got stuck with a reply. First of all, Banana Man is still a great song and I still love it. The point of my cover isn't "This song is racist and bad" as much as it is "This song is great but some of the choices give me bad vibes." There are lots of individual choices - all innocent enough on their own - that add up to create a feeling of unease with it that just lingers in the background. The face paint is a big part of it. Sure, people call it 'Clown' makeup all the time but I genuinely don't know that clowns have ever looked like that. Combined with the big eyes and the character being in black and white for most of the video, it just seems touchy. BUT it's also: The Caribbean accent. Sure, most "tropical style" songs are sung in it, but those songs are also usually sung by people from the area, not white dudes from Michigan. The vernacular - somewhat related to the accent. Pronouncing words like "the" and "this" with a 'd' sound instead of 'th", saying "me" instead of "my", intentionally messing with grammar ("Here he come" instead of "Here he comes") all just feel like a sort of lazy stereotype, and are once again written and performed by 5 white dudes from Michigan. The lyrics. The song is intentionally obtuse, and can be very easily mapped to basically any metaphor you'd please, but the core, literal lyrics themselves seem just a little too reminiscent of Island stereotypes for comfort. The entire second verse specifically, which talks about dancing around flames, chanting tunes, freeing spirits etc. just doesn't sit well. Then, of course, the music itself, which I would say is the most harmless of everything I noted, and really only becomes weird once matched with the rest of it. It's a passionate belief of mine that music (as in notes, chords, harmony, melody etc. before lyrics or other context) is innocent and free, and the fact that Tally Hall wrote a playful Reggae-esque tune itself is OBVIOUSLY harmless, but using it as a base for other Island and Caribbean stereotypes is a little freaky in my opinion. Also, whose bright idea was it to inter-mingle human grunting noises and monkey screeches in the official release??? Like come on dude. (About 1:39 in the Spotify version for those playing along at home.) And FINALLY, just to top it off, I'd like to direct you to this promotional video that was made for the song 'Black Rainbows' from Hawaii: Part II by Miracle Musical, in which Joe dons the "clown" makeup (yes, the air quotes are sarcastic) to perform Native Hawaiian lyrics. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UXKTu0POVdM.html&ab_channel=Ayumi Sure, it's not part of the Banana Man 'lore', but I don't know how anyone can look at it and not think "alright that's a little weird." ... ... ...well that was a little ramble and a half. As always, no one is obligated to like my music. If you think this cover sucks then that's your right, but you're one of many people who seem to think my opinion boils down to "face paint bad >:(" and write me off as a virtue signalling weirdo. Banana Man is literally the first song I discovered by Tally Hall. I have an intense adoration for it and without it, I'd never have gone down the path I'm on now. But when I promised myself I'd cover all of MMMM and finally got around to doing this one, all of these things left a sour taste in my mouth and I couldn't justify doing them myself, which is what led me to writing the version I did. It's a great song! It's just a little weird in ways I couldn't get around, and that's okay, as long as we don't pretend they're not there.

@@ChonnyJash lol pin of shame for that dude But anyways yea @ChonnyJash I guess that is fair to say of the song. While I interpret it as just a bunch of teenagers getting high in front of a campfire or something, everyone has their versions of the interpretations, but the 2nd verse especially kind of puts a weird "island dwellers" stereotype feel to it, even if its my personal favorite part of the song. Like as you said, it's fine to wear those "rose-tinted lenses" but don't completely disregard the possibly troublesome parts, regardless of if it was accidentally or intentionally offensive.

@@ChonnyJash Yeah you got a point, the song is kinda funny and the video too, but if you look at it right yeah is very racist in some aspects, the fact that Joe makes good music doesn't change what he did, but still I think that people don't gotta judge people's artwork because of the creator.

It's more clear it's coming from a point of being a fan of Tally Hall, and being able to acknowledge the song is catchy as fuck, but also needing to recognize that the style in which Banana Man presents itself is ... a problem. The only reason I don't call it problematic is because that word has been ruined by the internet. The song is at its most basic, a quirky bop about tribal humans and their silly quirky lives, but in the way it presents itself with the accent and such borders on minstrelry

did not expect this cover to go the way it did lol "it cant be racist if I like the song" made me laugh. I always saw the painted face and googly eyes as a clown face, which fits the songs theme of letting loose and having fun, but this is the second time I've seen someone say it looks racist so I figure my interpretation isn't the obvious one. the accent though, yeah. surprisingly profound for a banana man cover and I feel similarly to this songs idea about lots of things, most relevantly joe hawley, with the somewhat recent transphobic comments he made and how a lot of fans just outright deny it bc they like his music and want to believe in the best. I'm doubtful he's really hateful and bigoted, the way he said all that stuff was kind of nonsensical and he seems to talk like that a lot, I'm pretty sure he has some mental illness and IIRC his friends have said he shows scitzophrenia symptoms, but there are a lot of fans who outright deny he ever said the stuff he said or say with certainty that he's not transphobic despite none of us knowing the guy. anyway in my head whenever i listen to banana man I imagine its about returning to monke. the singer is a monkey, so is the banana man and everyone else, they are trying to convince you the listener to stop being so uptight and join them

Now, I think the accent portrayed in Banana Man is a big part in what gives the song its iconic vocal rhythm and makes it so catchy. Is it racist - definitely, but I'm not the type of person to look too critically at a silly tongue-in-cheek song by a few funny lads. I definitely think Banana Man without the accent and surrealist lyrics isn't Banana Man. Given the choice, I'd rather live in a world with Banana Man than without, and this is coming from a banana eater with a native accent living in a tropical third world country. That being said, I think this cover is absolutely well-written and the production is liquid fire. I would love more covers in this style.

I know this remix is supposed to criticize the ignorance of the original but whenever I hear it I imagine an argument between Jack and Piggy from Lord Of The Flies. Jack is trying to influence the group to turn to their animal instincts while still answering to him as their leader. “You’re the cattle, I’m the free.” While Piggy is getting sick of Jack’s chaos and trying to bring back order. “What’s this, fucking 1959? With the painted face and google eyes?” Remember. In the book, painted faces are used to show how the group is losing their civilized nature. Similar to how the original song’s painted faces ended up showing Tally Hall’s ignorance. A common theme in this song is how not thinking beforehand will lead to mistakes. Lyrics like “Conscience begone in catchy notes” and “It’s perfectly fine to wear rose tinted lenses. But don’t forget your other senses, lest you finally face the consequences.” Which is similar to Lord Of The Flies’s theme of how falling to your animalistic desires will snuff out rational thought.
