I have been trying
to write a haiku for you.
Some things I just can't do.
Maybe you're beyond
ancient asian poetry,
or maybe it's just me.
I have been trying to get this haiku
just right, all night, for you, alright, I'm through.
Maybe this poem
was lost in the sauce we spilled,
that never got refilled.
I've never thought much
of formulaic verse anyway,
and rhymes are not my fort-.

but you're hard to write down right.
So I pen these tried attempts
at haikus for you tonight.

(This should be easy.
They're simple, these rules. Why's it
so hard to break through?)
[Wait. I actually did it.
I wrote a haiku for you!
I finally found a break, holy shit it's possible,
I finally made it through.]
[I've been trying not to try my heart.
I've minded my own mind.
So just this once, just one attempt.
I'll write you down just right.]
[Kind, sweet and charming.
Voluptuously endowed.
Hair a darkened brown.]
[But then suddenly,
a sharp, piercing pain resounds.
Vision starts to cloud.]
[I wanted to see
the hand in which it was held,
before the knife fell.]
[I thought you'd stabbed me.
I swore that I smelled your smell,
but I stabbed myself.]
[I finally did it,
yet it hasn't helped at all.
[I WROTE A HAIKU FOR YOU]
I still feel so small.]
[I know it's too late.
I know you won't hear my call,
[IT'S ALL THAT I CAN DO]
and so now I fall.]
