i remember seeing the girls being interviewed about this song and they were asked why they think it didnt do as well as it should have as it is such a great song. they thought it was because back in the 80s a lots of songs that had a serious message behind them were always overlooked. but they agreed that they thought it was a great song too.

All the more poignant when you remember what the lyrics are about - a young male friend of theirs who was working as a rent boy (young male sex worker) in London in the 1980s when London was very sleazy and dangerous place
@Halvomeister
@Halvomeister 2 года назад
Before Stock Aitken and Waterman turned Bananarama into a pop-machine juggernaut, A Trick of The Night (True Confessions) was what I would call 'Peak Bananarama'. Somehow, its lyrics encapsulated the zeitgeist of 1980s hedonism, but in a reflective moment. While the girls have gone on, deservedly, to much greater success, this track and the True Confessions album will always seem the moment when Bananarama found itself.

This song is a great example of 'if only the record company had listened to the artist.' The band had liked this song and were anxious to have it released as a single. However, the label convinced them that they ought to issue two uptempo numbers first and then this one. Had this been the follow-up to "Venus" in the States, it would have definitely been a hit. They performed it on American Bandstand the week they appeared to do "Venus." This would have showcased them in a different way which would have gone down well with the Americans. Ah well! Can't rewrite history.

This song defines the prime of Bananarama: the sophisticated, catch synth beat with beautiful harmonies and deep lyrical meaning. Here, they have clearly moved on from the experimental period of their music, as seen in 1983’s “Deep Sea Skiving” and my personal favorite eponymous album “Bananarama” released in 1984. They have also developed more of an image and genre in this album, before SAW took over and completely took Bananarama to glossy pop. Something I wish they never moved onto but that’s just how it goes. Anyway, this is Bananarama at their best!

I will say I enjoy the original album version better though, as the vocals/tempo is sped up a bit on this version which makes it a big less dark and moody. @@spaceysno1girl-youtuber Yes, I agree with the menace, the crane idea did fit well. Strange it was never used in the video. But what a great song.

@@keithbartlett4909 Yeh i remembered they hated the guys video, i really liked it and how it fit with the song and it was so much better than what they eventually went with, always been one of my favourite songs of theirs
