Dude knew his singers 👍

The people you didn't identify singing - Paul Weller (Style Council), Midge Ure (who along with Bob Geldof arranged the recording - from Ultravox), Martyn Ware (heaven 17) singing harmony with Marilyn. In the mass chorus are Kool & The Gang, Jody Whatley, Status Quo plus the other members of the bands Ultravox + Duran Duran + Spandau Ballet & Boomtown Rats. Boy George wasn't actually there and his stuff was inserted later (the next day I believe) which is why he seems somewhat isolated in his bits.

Wrong. He was there but he got there late. He was in a hotel when they called him, he had to fly in from Paris. They were already recording the song by the time he got there and he had to do his part separately.

Written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. Supergroup of British 🇬🇧, Irish 🇮🇪 and American 🇺🇸 musicians. Not listed in Wikipedia. Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) acoustic guitar 🎸. 50 musicians verify this! 😃 Strongly 💪 suggested next video 📹: Northern Lights. Tears Are Not Enough 😢 Bryan Adams is a member of Northern Lights. Canadian effort 🇨🇦 for African relief 🌍

Hi Terry, Thanks for the info. I remember The Jam, here in the States their big hit was a Town Called Malice. I have that on my 80s playlist. Wasn't Paul also in Style Council ? My ever changing mood, was their hit.

This a very historic song, but i'm more impressed by your knowledge of the Artists and why the song took place. People from all around the world assume that the UK got the idea from the US version We Are The World. When it's the other way round. I bet you already know this, but Phil Collins was the only artist to play live in London then live in Philaladelphia a few hours later, back when you could fly from the UK to the US in 3 hours.

The guy you didnt know at 7:16 in the video is Paul Weller of The Jam/Style Council and solo career. Mainly a UK star as sadly those acts didnt make a splash in the US

Thanks R N, The Jam had a hit with A Town Called Malice and Style Council with Ever Changing Mood, but that was about it as far as I remember.

Nooo The Jam we’re massive in the UK , Most of the songs they released went straight to number 1 without any airplay on the radio…. Hits include ….A Town called Malice , Elton Rifles, Going Underground, Down in a tube station at Midnight, The Bitterest pill. Paul Weller then formed another group called The Style Council had loads of chart hits with them too, Shout to the top, Your the best thing, The lodgers, Long hot summer. His music maybe unknown in the States but ask anyone growing up in the 80’s 90’s who Paul Weller is and they would tell you.

Bono didn’t want to sing the line “well tonight thank god it’s them instead of you” but Bob Geldof knew it would have the biggest punch to the listeners. And it did. I still get chills when he sings it. A lot of people need to watch the BBC doco that inspired Bob Geldof to do something. I still remember when l was 7 when this came out and the footage of the starving children with a thousand flies around them.

When boy George turned up to sing his part his voice wasn’t good so he asked for a sip of brandy and then he belted our this amazing verse. I’ve heard brandy helps loosen the vocal cords.
