In this review I try to show how amazing Band In A Box is for creating instant backing tracks. Altogether I spent about 30 minutes noodling around with this idea, practiced the instrumental three times and then was ready to do a rough draft recording. To hear a fully developed song using all BIAB backing tracks see this video: • Relic - Original Song ...
Band in a Box uses real studio musician recordings to provide a vast library of styles you can choose to create a musical composition with chords you select. I like to just open one of the demo arrangements that comes with the program and then alter it to my taste. I often ouptut all the tracks individually from Band in A Box and then EQ and add effects in Adobe Audition (you don't have to do that though). Hopefully this shows you how easy it is to make music. I highly recommend this software package if you have at least a rudimentary understanding of music. Almost any intermediate musician will be able to create songs and soundtracks that can support video. Go to www.pgmusic.com to learn more about this great application.

Thank you so much for this. I'm new to band in the box just a couple of month's ago ( bought the everything pack ) and am really impressed. Your video just showed me what I need to know on the current song I'm working on and that is to be able to pull instruments out where I want when I need to. Again, Thank you !!

Thanks for the compliment Mark. You'll have many hours of fun with BIAB. I especially like the latest set of custom styles they've included with the package - some really useful country and rock tracks. Limitless possibilities.

Hi from Australia, Tony, thanks for taking the time to demonstrate BIAB. I really enjoyed listening to your demo and here's why........It's really refreshing NOT to hear 50 semi quavers played at 200 bpm where two or three notes played - chosen carefully - with the soul of a great vibrato or a perfect bend will do wonders for a song's emotional power. It seem you have a perfect grip on the less is more concept, all hail to you and thanks again, great work, sweet playing.

Sure do appreciate that Graham. I'm not a flash player. Mark Knopfler and Clapton are my main influences, so you'll hear a bit of that in my playing. Great to have a viewer in Australia. Keep in touch! TLG

Superb video thanks. This shows how good BIAB is. You can rattle up a song in minutes from scratch and if you don't like the style, you can change it there and then to another one. Nice playing, this is very relaxing.

Thanks for the compliment Mark. I'm currently using the newest version of Band in a Box and then importing and remixing tracks in Logic Pro, introducing keyboard and live guitar and bass elements. I really love the package. I've never used the Trio, but it looks like great fun. Amazing what's available to us today for jamming and learning. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

Pretty good playing Tony and an excellent review. Does Band-in-a-box have some ability "listen and learn" from a chord progression that you might play initially, identify the tempo, and sort of "auto suggest" potential close-fit backing track with multiple sections such as intro, verse, chorus, fill-1, fill-2 and outtro etc. ?

Glad you enjoyed the video Sammy. Band in a box will sure give you plenty of styles and resources to work with. Even though I'm not a great singer, try listening to this song which is all BIAB except for 3 electric guitars I recorded. It will better help you understand the capabilities: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EUicsf2lyyc.html

+Tom Allen Hey Tom. Thanks for the comment. Nikki is great - just super busy with her final clinical training to be a respiratory therapist. Look for some original soul and Gospel from Nikonya as soon as the semester ends - probably mid December.

Hi Tony. I know that this is an old video now, but it was helpful to me, given that I am going to be buying BIAB. I really liked your soloing - I am trying to break out of the pentatonic box rut by learning to play chord tones more, and am finding it somewhat difficult, but your soloing gave me some ideas. Thanks very much.
@tonyleeglenn
@tonyleeglenn 5 лет назад
I appreciate that my friend. I really thought I played pretty bad in this vid - but it's cool that some people like it. One thing Band in a Box does is motivate you to think about the chord changes and shapes on the fretboard. When you see the chord symbols advancing on the screen you sort of want to move to them to develop your riffs. It does cause you to move away somewhat from major and minor pentatonics - which is what you're witnessing me doing in this video. Like you, I'm pretty bound to the boxes too.

Thanks for the excellent demo! Exactly what I was looking for. Have you tried it's Reggae styles? or maybe the Hip Hop? I hope to make backing tracks for live gigging, blending classic rock, reggae, latin, and hip hop styles. You can't loose with the 30-day return deal.
@tonyleeglenn
@tonyleeglenn 7 лет назад
I have definitely played with the reggae tracks, but not the hip hop. You'll find some cool stuff in there for reggae for sure. killer drum beats and nice sounding organs & backing guitars. I think they have some demo recordings on PG music's web site if you haven't visited.

I think I played mostly off chords in this one. There are some G pentatonics in portions a well. Thanks for watching and asking.

Tony thanks for this demo.,I will have to look further into them. My idea is send the BIAB to tracks one and two of my Tascam 8 track, building the other tracks with my own guitar, harmonic, and vocals,, mix them to stereo on the computer and then burn to CD. Is that how you use yours?
@tonyleeglenn
@tonyleeglenn 7 лет назад
Hey Bob. I do something similar. I actually will arrange a song with all my chord changes, then export it in 3 or 4 different styles. If you're using a multi-track program on your computer you can export each audio track separately (bass, drums, keys, strings, etc.) then pull the cuts from each style and mix them up with software - I use Logic pro. That way I get a lot of variation in the tracks - kind of makes the music more complex. My song "Relic" is a good example of how I use band in a box. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EUicsf2lyyc.html - I used tracks from 3 different styles to arrange the backing tracks, then I played a couple of guitars and added vocals. As long as you keep the beats per minute the same on all styles you can cross mix them to your taste. It would be harder to do with tape if your Tascam is still tape based rather than digital. Hope this helps.

Bloody brilliant Tony... I don't have a musical bone in my body... I would love to be able to do what you do with music... I would love to make music for my own videos so may look at band in a box...
@tonyleeglenn
@tonyleeglenn 8 лет назад
+Rich cove What's really cool Rich is that you don't even have to have any musical skill. What I did in this video (play some lame guitar) is done way better by the solo packs that come with it. If you want an Eric Clapton-type guitar solo, or an Elton John-type piano interlude, you just select a soloist and it follows the chords just like a real musician. All you'd have to know is what chords go together in a typical musical key. You can look that info up on Google in two seconds. I may make another video that shows how a non-musician can make awesome backing tracks for video with Band in a Box - good enough music for any RU-vid project. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi there I'm writing fro Paraguay South America I watched your video using the Band-in-a-box software I just bought the 2016 version not knowing that this simple pack comes with very basics features Would you comment on what to expect on this BIAB 2016 version? I will appreciate it very much! Thanx Fernando
@tonyleeglenn
@tonyleeglenn 7 лет назад
Fernando - what was the package you bought called specifically. I use the 2016 "Everything" pack. It should tell you what all you have purchased on this page: www.pgmusic.com/bbwin.packages.htm . Band in a Box is a great practice and composing tool, but I think it's the best when you get the package that includes all the studio musician tracks for editing.

Thank you Tony for answering so quick! I just bought the 98 $ BIAB 2016 and I realize now that those beautiful sounds are not included in this basic software... When you whatch PG Music videos they don't advice customers on this! And another question... can you save your BIAB files as MP3?
@tonyleeglenn
@tonyleeglenn 7 лет назад
You sure can save as mp3. It has many audio export options. I need to do a video that shows how you do it. Maybe I can make that happen soon.

@tonyleeglenn
@tonyleeglenn 8 лет назад
Hey Gerald. As long as you understand enough music theory to determine chords in a song it will do just fine for you. And all you'll have to do is mute the bass track so you can play along and add your own chops. Go there and watch some of the demos on the pgmusic website. It's great.
@PrinceWesterburg

Drummers hated drum machines until they realised it freed them up to do the stuff they loved and they didn't have to rely on the bassist to keep the beat - sorry! :o) So I reckon if you go in with an open mind then you could get a lot from it. You got me thinking actually as, you know how it is, you practice something and then play it live and the musicians don't do what you expect? You can practice at home with that random element and better adapt your style to whats thrown at you. That could make some pretty amazing bass players. Also, if this exports MIDI then theoretically you could play into Logic and get it's drummer to adapt to your playing - sweet!

The only thing missing from B in a B/Realband is more Brett Mason lead guitar. Don't know how the other guys do it with samples on other DAWs, but this product makes anybody with good musical ideas capable of great music, out of the box. As the sample library grows it will become more and more powerful. Check out what I've done with it on ,y Jeff Cook, You Tube channel.
