So... while I love their prog-style songs like Black Hole, Giovanni, etc... Puzzle remains my favorite song from Band-Maid. Kanami is in full ROCK GODDESS mode here. She barely repeats anything, same with Akane. The constant small changes mean this song never gets boring, and while I feel this word gets overused... the song feels epic. I'm looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts. Curious if you checked out the Acoustic. Thanks for the shoutout, and as always, thank you for being a continual force for good in the sometimes-terrible reaction space.
It's right up there for me! moratorium followed by this live... what a double whammy! Yeah, I totally need to give that a listen! No problem dude, thanks for being a continual force for good in sometime terrible comment section! To be fair, most of you guys are pure class acts, love the banter!
Enjoyed your reaction as always, they did an acoustic version of this song with just Kanami (lead guitarists on an acoustic guitar and doing backing vocals and Saiki (lead vocals). The rest of the band is not there. You should give it a listen sometime, entirely different feel.
Just adding my own on Puzzle. This song knocked me off my chair when I first heard it with Saiki's strongest vocals to that point. But what really amazed me after a couple more listens was that Kanami never stops the entire song. She is beyond amazing. The speed and inventiveness of her playing is, well, I can't do it justice with my vocab. Again thanks for the instruction.
From Japan BAND-MAID has the ability to acquire more fans, songwriting and playing ability. Attractive reactions are beneficial and important to them as well, increasing their fans. Even if they make good music, if we don't know it, they won't be rewarded. Thank you for the fascinating reaction.
An interesting pick! The acoustic version of this is one of my favorites of their songs, and so wildly different from the full band version. Because of that version, I've ended up listening to this version a lot less, so I really appreciate the analysis!
@@JbfMusicGuitar they have a bunch of them in various places. Smile is a personal favorite of mine. They're also doing an online acoustic concert on Christmas, which I think is their first all-acoustic gig
Great achievement!. This was, for me, The Performance (Tokyo Studio Coast 2017, they released a DVD with Start Over single in 2018). The incredible mix (heavily postproduced, you barely hear the crowd) allows to listen to perfectly every instrument crystal clear so Unchained Kanami grabbed me strongly. This puzzle of riffs has always been one of my favorites. Great job Jack, I´ve enjoyed A LOT!
Thanks for doing another Band Maid, they never fail to entertain and inform (both you and the band!). I really love Puzzle because it is yet another different sound from them and the lyrics are really touching (if you listen to the acoustic version that becomes clearer). It was fascinating to watch you set up the pitch shifter. I would love to see a segment where you walk through some of the technology that you have and what it can do. Something I know /nothing/ about.
Thanks dude! Yeah, I love checking out songs form these guys- always a tonne of energy and cool ideas! In a nutshell 9 times out of 10 I use amp modeling thing called 'Axe FX'. You plug it in to your computer and can choose from a tonne of amps, cabs and effects. I've been meaning to do a sort of temp to copy Kanami's rig/sound, haven't quite found the time for it yet, but is very much on the to-do list 🤘
My one and only favorite song of Band-Maid... Kanami´s workrate in this song is INSANE! That is the reason i love it so much... Now you have to listen to the acoustic version, it will blow your mind how different it is and check out the lyrics, its hearbreaking! Greetings from Germany, loved your video like always about Band-Maid :)
@@JbfMusicGuitar I bet their rehearsal routine is grueling. I’m not surprised we never see their family or with any partners. They can most likely play all their songs in their sleep they practice so much, they are dedicated for sure.
I enjoy your analysis and comments regarding Band-Maid, in this instance, and other groups. While you do a great job of explaining music theory and techniques you also make it fun. My I suggest checking out Sokoninaru - they a bit of a challenge to keep up with much less analyze. Thanks again.
Puzzle!! Thank you for presenting your excellent reaction to that awesome live performance, and thanks so much for the unexpected shout out! Yeah, the live "Moratorium" and live "Puzzle" each spent time as my no. 1 fave B-M song, along with the live "Onset", which you mentioned. I'd say all 3 remain in my top 5. I particularly dig that you noticed a similarity b/t "Onset" and "Puzzle". To me, I've grouped those 2 together in my mind because I consider them complex pieces of music, with each containing multiple different riffs. To that end, I think "Puzzle" might benefit from a third guitar. But, I'm not an expert on musical arrangements, so I'll yield to those that are.
My pleasure dude! Feels like there's a thread of comminatory between them but I can't quite put my finger on what exactly! Another guitar, you say?? Well, I'm not going to argue with that- more guitar everywhere!!! 🎸🎸🎸🎶 🤣
thank you for taking your time for band maid, even i have to thank you for explaining this detailed concept, your explanation made things easier for me to understand the concept of their song, i'm new to instrument, and i found the right channel. By the way, today is Band Maid drummer's birthday
Thanks a bunch dude, so glad this was useful to you! Awesome, wish I could say I planned that to coincide with her Birthday... but just dumb luck on my part!
Really enjoyed it, esp when you were discussing the pitch-shifting and other processing effects. Thank you so much for sharing your musical wisdom with the plebs! :)
Hey Jack. Exquisite reaction as ever. Kanami is of course a guitar Goddess, with not only talent and ability but also finesse and feel for the nuances. Like the others before mentioned the acoustic version is beautiful naturally.....oh, just to add to the bands on your long list, you should check out Maximum The Hormone. an absolute cult band from Japan having influenced all rock/metal musicians there in the past two decades. A mad combination of mixed genres and surreal structures that is just so uniquely kickass. I think you'd have a field day with them. Perhaps any of the songs like "Yoshu Fukushu", "maximum the hormone II ~ Let's Talk about Menkata Cottelee" or "A-L-I-E-N".....or tons of others lol
This song my all time favorite from Band Maid.Thank you that you spend time for this classic one. Really presiate that.I can't wait the Moratorium :)It's actually down :D Ps: If you have time, check the acoustic version live...I think really intresting compare the 2 version.Take care....And one more suggestion...From the new album B side!!!HIBANA ;) Enjoy
This should get the gold medal for lead guitar doing most work on any track. Kanami never stops. Her latest work is growing ever more complex as if she has to get all the music in her head out and is apparently producing a new draft song every week. The solo in Puzzle is just perfect. NOW listen to the acoustic version - just Kanami on acoustic with Saiki, and be amazed.
Ahah was waiting for this one! Now if you want the puzzle to be complete try the acoustic version it is really something else to say the least. Also take a look at lyrics to fully understand the different feelings Saiki transmits with her voice. Keep up the great job 👍
Nice lick breakdown. It shows how clean Kanami can play these little things. I’m watching you stretch for notes that she’s nailing with those little hands of hers. I don’t think her guitar is a smaller scale?
Her PRS might be 22 frets, so could be a wee bit smaller? It's also the sort of lick that after you spend a bit of time with you can figure out a more comfortability way of playing it, lock it in to muscle memory and let rip- very much like she's doing here!
Another great reaction Jack.. Good one Puzzel is a great song, enough solos and riffs to make a few songs :).. But thats Band maid I guess.. You asked for it.. Lol Some of the groups and songs I have been asking for. Lovebites - holy war Live at Tokyo, Aldious - We are MV, Gacharic spin - Mindset MV, Laura Cox band - Hard blues shot Live, Black Mamba - Highway star cover MV.. Best wishes from France..
Awesome, glad to hear that Grant! I think you might be in luck, I did Lovebite Holy War (which I think was live in tokyo) a wee while back: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nXE3LktQKVQ.html will add the others in as well! 🤘
Aaaah I need to stop watching these videos :P I've never played guitar in my life, but first Kanami, and then these videos of yours, have made me seriously consider learning to play electric guitar. I know this must be a question you get every day of your life, but any advice on a starter guitar? I'm not afraid to spend a bit more to get a great instrument that will make me look forward to playing it. Of course I wish I could get a PRS like Kanami... Delicious looking things aren't they. But realistically, I'm looking at something from the more affordable Ibanez series or a Yamaha Pacifica something or other. Advice for a complete beginner who only intends to play at home for fun? Love these videos if that wasn't self-evident, thank you!
Go for it!!! 🤘🎸🎶 Yamaha Pacifica's are pretty great starter guitars, as are the lower end Ibanez ones- sounds like you've done a bit of due diligence already! I'd go in at that sort of price point, because you can always get a fancier/more expensive guitar later down the line. Other advice would be keep your goals in mind; they might change over time; but say you're like- 'right, I want to learn some Band-Maid Riffs, maybe a couple of songs' Great goal. You can still learn other stuff alongside that; chords, scales, techniques, other songs, etc. But having a clear longer term aim is a huge help. In terms of practice 'little and often' beats 'long and rarely'- so like 10-20 mins everyday is gonna reap way more of a rewards than 3 hours, but only once every 2 or 3 weeks. A great trick is to not necessarily force yourself to practice, just physically pick the guitar up. Nine times out of ten it's like; well I've got it in my hand now I might as well play for a bit. Those would be my top tips, so let me know if they makes sense!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Thank you so much! Those are great an encouraging words honestly, makes great sense to me. I'll try to take your practise advice to heart, I have a tendency to do quite the opposite even if I know it's not a good way to learn (applies to many skills I think). I have a friend who's quite experienced making electronic music, and she mentioned it'd be fun to have someone able to record real guitar tracks, so that's one goal... Of course, learning some BM riffs is another obvious one :) There's quite a lot of choice in the price range, would you have a personal choice for a guitar in the up-to-400£ range, just as an inspiration? They're a bit pricey here in Norway in general, so I'm not sure how well that price range translates, but regardless...!
@@Mythricia1988 I can't think of any models off the top of my head, the Ibanez RG series is is usually a pretty solid choice. I've got two second hand RGs that I modded with different pickups and stuff. If possible try them out and see which feels comfortable. I suppose the only other thing is that you'd want to have an amp (or software, I suppose) to play through as well so just make sure to factor that in!
@@JbfMusicGuitar Noted! I have a USB interface already with DI capability so was going to play through amp emulators for a start, and see about a real amp a bit later. Thank you again!
@@GaryHolloway-810 Yes, I couldn't agree more! Even in several of the online concert songs, Mincho's guitar seems very low in the mix, shameful. Not the bands fault, but the person at the sound board needs to be hung by his toes, well maybe a stern talking to, lol!
@@GaryHolloway-810 Yeah, me too!! And while I like the tone she's adopted for her later material, and appreciate that it fits the songs, I wish she'd throw in a few more songs with the full-throated rock goddess sound from the Zepp era.
You're in luck! I did Thrill a wee while back; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wx8BP2Vmr6k.html and actually did breakdown some of the bass solo!
Your Band-Maid reactions are becoming a formidable body of work in their own right! Fans’ favourite guitar solos (according to a recent Reddit post) are in the songs Alone, Daydreaming, Awkward (outro solo), Matchless Gum and Anemone. Alone is Kanami’s best attempt at incorporating sweep picking into a solo I think. It’s one of their pop punk songs. If you look at that one, I’d go with the official music video rather than a live version for once.
Haha, thanks mate! Yeah I figure I should give them their own playlist a wee bit back. That's huge help, when I finally get round to breaking down her solos/licks in more depth I'll be sure to check those out! 🤘🤘🤘
Greeting Sir! My today's suggestion is a brand new extreme & melodic Black Metal song entitled "Here Comes The Storm", from the French Canadian band named "Obscurcis Romancia". Thank you and have a nice day!!
Yeah, I suppose I'm alright at it- my finger picking chops aren't amazing atm because I've not had to play music like that in a good while. Used to do a fair bit of looper pedal stuff with the acoustic so picked up a few tricks form that. More at home on an electric for sure though!
To be honest, unless you really want to listen through more and not pause as much, I think you should stick with the way you've always reacted. I personally feel like I am getting more education from you on the music that way. If it is more enjoyable for you this way, then pay no attention to me. Music is made to be enjoyed.
Cheers dude! It's a bit of a mix for me, editing 2 x 10-15 min videos is way easier than one longer 20-30 minute one. From an analytics point of view it probably makes sense to do them as 2 different types of videos. Although I do enjoy overly explaining every thought that pops in o my head, lmao! But I'll change stuff about every so often, see what works, see what doesn't. Apprentice your input dude 🙏
While Band Maid is truly worthy of being musically over-analyzed, most people realized how amazing they are. You previously did a breakdown of “Moratorium”, which beautifully transitioned directly into “Puzzle” in this performance. Puzzle is an awesome song with Saiki putting in a fantastic vocal performance. Watching both songs in sequence is a 1-2 knockout punch.
For maximum emotional pain do the acoustic version. This song is about a girl who is in love with a married man who knows that he will never leave his wife.
At no point in this is kanami playing what she is supposed to be playing and no one cares. I remember someone.sayimg "but that's the chorus part she is playing in the verse what will she do in the chorus??" Lol
Jack you're the man. Love this stuff even if I don't always understand it. It's like a behind the scenes. Puzzle is a great live song. The acoustic version is also phenomenal. Peace.
@@GaryHolloway-810 Absolutely. That's why I'm so hyped for the acoustic show. All their acoustics are amazing. Kanami is amazing. Her sense of what sounds good (to me anyway) is off the charts. Then the others just add to the awesomeness! 🔥
I absolutely love Puzzle as well. Definitely on my top 5 list. But I have to disagree with what some are writing about Kanami doing changes throughout the song. It is the same lick most of the song. For me the part of playing this song is keeping that lick consistent for all that time. My fingers start to cramp up after a while and I find this lick pretty awkward to play. At first listen it sounds like it would be as simple as the Thunderstruck lick but I find it a LOT harder because of having to shift all the time. I play bass usually so I guess I'm not used to the scale length and those tiny little strings you guitarist use and so on and that might be a factor of course. Oh! I almost forgot you wanted recommendations. You should really check out another Japanese band called Gacharic Spin. They are...err...I've heard Japan figured out what to replace the Fukushima nuclear plant with. Just make GS play Redline live and they're sorted. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9r6YeSatOac.html
I think it's more that she's just playing all the time, lol! But I could be mistaken about what folk are meaning. Totally, it's all about finding the slickest way to play it and just locking that in to muscle memory. But yeah guitars feel like little toys when you're predominately on bass! Thanks for that dude, I think I recognise the name, but haven't hear any of their stuff yet 🤘
I’m trying to learn the guitar (and bass) of the song L.C.G. From the band Hanabie. Would you please do a review and breakdown of the guitar, at least, on that song?
This is not one of my favorite Band Maid songs. Even Jack's reaction to it seems kind of muted, less enthusiastic. The playing is all top notch, of course. But the song seems like it's building to some emotional payoff that it never reaches. A puzzle that couldn't be solved.
@@JbfMusicGuitar I'm still waiting to see your snakebite & whisky top face. After that you'll either come up with the best B-M inspired riff in history or end up sounding like Infant Anihillator.😆
Fair enough, I mean you don't have to if you don't want to! The thing is these really do take quite a while to make; might not think it; but by the time I've- put up that green screen, sorted the lights, mic setup (which I totally messed up here), got the video lined up, worked out parts/song elements, figured out how to explain them, edit down the audio, edit the video & audio together, make thumbnails, add the tags, description, etc. It takes up rather a lot of time. If I said 'wow' a couple of times I could bash out tonnes of these, but I really don't see how that adds any value, you know?
@@JbfMusicGuitar I like what you do because you break it down. Play the riffs etc. You are one of the ones who do deserve income from it for your efforts. In my opinion
I'm not sure if LT was pointing you out. I took his comment to mean that there is a new wave of reactors that just tell us how much they like the song/video without adding much substance. We who watch your channel appreciate your deep technical insights. I personally don't mind you stopping every few seconds. It makes me understand more of the nuances in Band-Maid musicality.
@@JbfMusicGuitar Keep doing what you are doing. Very enjoyable and informative. Very few on youtube can do what you and few others do so well . Teach while keeping it fun .
