Seeing the Maids live and up close in a small, intimate club is a "Thrill" of a lifetime. One should consider themselves lucky to experience them like this because it's becoming rare. And as for sound... it'll be the best hard rockin' sound you can imagine -- clear, discreet, powerful and full of energy and joyful vibes! Just ask anyone who's experienced them live. In fact, we are all now getting an earful of "wow's" and "that was incredible" from all the reactors and commenters from their successful Band-Maid USA Tour. Thx, Michael!

Yo, Mike. Band-Maid formed in the summer of 2013 and produced an 8-song EP in January 2014. Their management provided songs written by Kentarō Akutsu and Masahiko Fukui. This song was on their second EP in 2015 and Akutsu wrote this one as well. The guitarist Kanami Tōno writes most of their music these days but she learned a lot from Akutsu and they seem to have a good relationship. He wrote a couple of others I like a lot, *Fate* and *Smile* being two of them. *Fate* is a straight-forward rocker with a great riff and a lot of attitude, and *Smile* is love song that hides a message to their fans and how they feel about playing for them onstage. When people say this song saved the band - their first two EPs didn't do that well (the first one didn't chart at all and the second one got to 64 on the Japanese Oricon Albums Chart). Their first single was a very Latin-flavored pop song *Ai to Jōnetsu no Matador* and *Thrill* was the B side. Their label wanted to make a music video, the band wanted to make this one. It didn't do much at first; they found out many years later that their label was not going to make a second one. Instead, they were going to break them up and keep the vocals. Instead, it got posted on a U.S. J-Rock Facebook page, it went viral and got several million views within a week or two. They got an invitation to play at Sakura-Con in Seattle in 2016 and found the American fans loved their sound. They played Mexico City, Europe, and the U.S. - their label stuck with them, and here we are today. Their final vindication; their first album went to 26 when it was re-released in 2018.

Thank you for the background description. "Tono writes most of their music these days" feels a little misleading because the three exceptions you mention (two of which share credits with Mr. Akutsu) are kind of a drop in the ocean of music that Ms. Tono has written since 2017-18. I think it's more accurate to say that (excluding the first 24 songs written for the band when they were starting out) Tono writes ALL of their music (with the three exceptions - from 4-5 years ago - as noted).
@surfingasongwave
@surfingasongwave Год назад
@@drogonr9318 You're right of course. I didn't mean to be misleading. I just resist absolutes like "all" and "always." I *_NEVER_* use them. (lol) So, sorry for the essay coming up. I don't sit in on their meetings so I don't pretend to actually know; I'm guessing based on their interviews and album credits. Kanami is very quick to give credit to the others. She will say something like "I wrote a demo and sent it to the others. Misa wrote the bass parts and Akane wrote the drums, then Kobato tweaked the melody to fit the words better." It gives the impression they use a collaborative writing process. On the album credits, all music and production is credited to BAND-MAID, while vocals are credited to Kobato, or Kobato and Atsumi, or recently to Atsumi for "*Corallium*" and *"Hate?"* or Tom Kennedy for *"The Dragon Cries"* and so on. Here are some things I've gleaned: Wikipedia says about *"Blooming",* "All of the members wrote a part of the chorus of "Blooming". Bassist Misa wrote the intro" (citing three sources). Also, here's an interview with Misa in the May 2021 issue of Player: _Player: Personally, my favorite song is CHEMICAL REACTION._ _Misa: Thank you so much. I play it fingerstyle. I sent a bass riff to Kanami first, and we started writing it from there._ I can't locate it at the moment but Misa mentioned she wrote the solo in *"Influencer"* on keyboard to avoid her bass-playing habits. There are similar quotes from Akane - she wrote five different drum parts for *"Black Hole"* and so naturally everyone selected *hell* as their choice. _However,_ the others all say they don't ever change anything without checking with Kanami first, so it's _her_ writing and the others respect her greatly. That Player interview has a really interesting observation: _Player: Your band has five different colors. It seems Kanami-san got hints from elements the other members wanted and daily conversations, and brought them into shape well this time…_ . . . [later in the interview, discussing the possibility of a Misa-written song in the future] _Misa: Yes! I sent it to Kanami like “Can you add your guitar?” and then I was like “Oh! It’s now so Band-Maid!” In the beginning, I played the rhythm guitar myself, and added the drums and the bass, and when I sent the first part [note: intro + verse + chorus] to Saiki, she said “I feel it’s not so Band-Maid.” So I was like “Wait a moment, I’ll try a little more” and did trial and error. But I couldn’t come up with ideas in the end, so I asked Kanami about that, then she played the guitar for me, and that gave it the Band-Maid vibe. After all, I realized that Band-Maid songs must include the tastes of all of us. …That might be because the music I listen to is different from Band-Maid._ This is one of the biggest advantages of having five musicians collaborate on a song. When you think of bands with one contributor, they tend to run out of ideas and the songs start repeating themselves. Band-Maid seems to have a never-ending fountain of good ideas. As much as I admire Kanami, I think she has put herself into a very fertile situation where she can rely on four others to flesh out her ideas and generate new ideas. She is unquestionably a musical genius. She's humble (to a fault, perhaps) and quick to give credit to others. She's smart enough to have and use some pretty intelligent partners. I wish I could get others to catch onto how brilliant she is.
@drogonr9318
@drogonr9318 Год назад
@@surfingasongwave Very nice analysis. I agree, the other members spice up their parts and I think Kanami makes sure to give them space to do so. In an early interview when asked who writes the music, Saiki bluntly says, "Kanami." I think however as the band has developed over the years, the music creation has become more collaborative. This seems esp the case with Misa, as Kanami has seemed content over the past few years to rely upon her to write the bass elements. I've always thought of Band-Maid as more in the Beach Boys mold, than say the Beatles - Kamami being the Brian Wilson of the band.

Their very first MV was nearly their last as a band. If it hadn't gone viral the label was going to drop them. Luckily it did and now we have well over 100 songs to enjoy. BAND-MAID consider themselves to be Hard Rock. But among their many influences is Metal, as well as, Punk, Funk, Power Pop, Classical, Jazz and many others. There's nothing they can't play. Since you want to learn from BAND-MAID seek out their tutorial songs. They're shot like this one against a white screen 5 videos per song. One video for each instrument and then one with all of them playing the song together, so you can focus on one instrument for the entire song and then in context.

The song is banging…..the video would have been pretty cheap to make….camera, lights, green screen, editing…..I’d guess most artists can get that much together for almost free if they enlist friends and favors…..without any favors the full price could be hefty. I’m glad it worked out for them…. ❤️

Keep in mind that this is almost 10 years old. This was a studio written track, which is standard fare in Japan for groups just starting out. They didn't get to begin writing their own music and lyrics until the song Alone from the album Brand New Maid. After that beat all of the studio written tracks in the charts, the studio let them write all of the tracks. You will end up learning a lot with how Mincho writes musical parts. Misa improvises her parts according to the feel of the song. They will also change up intros and other parts for live shows. Manners/Black Hole Live video is the best example of that. You will never hear that intro for Manners at any other show, nor on the Unseen World CD.

“Yo!” I’ve heard the fan complaints about mentioning the word “pop” when discussing Band-Maid. Band-Maid, in my opinion, are their own genre, and they occasionally use pop elements in their compositions. Your first reaction to “Domination” was right on. Arena pop rock, call and response stuff. “Thrill” is mainstream hard rock, but the Maids have a catalog any musician can really dig into. Brings me back to my days studying RUSH Respectful suggestion for another one? “Onset,” also live. Hard rock instrumental, time signature change, lots of fun to listen to and completely different from either of your first two reactions Thanks for checking out Band Maid!

Their oldest MV 2014. No problem using the word Pop. Earlier songs were often more pop/punk, usually a harder rock verse followed by a pop/rock chorus. Some songs even contain a hint of jazz in them, mostly from Misa-Bass and Akane- Drums although Kanami- Lead Guitar always surprises with her solos etc. These days most othe their music is more hard rock/metal, but then they started doing more acoustic sounding songs including a live stream concert and CD. Something for everybody. Loved you follow up music- just like the band Nova Twins in the UK. Urban, grime, hard rock, rapp. Check them out.

This is a cute and catchy rock song. I like it, and in particular I like this music movie. It is very likable. I have seen a live version that actually was quite bad and the band members totally uninterested. Strange, but I do not know why. NOTE - that the rhythm guitar player is NOT playing here. It is only one guitar you hear. And this is because she could not play back then. She can play good rhythm guitar today though. As others have said, this is their break through and we would probably not have any BAND-MAID today without it.

Don't mind the people who objected to you calling Domination pop-metal. Band-Maid are a hard rock band but they put every genre into their music, including plenty of metal, no matter how much a minority of their fans get upset about the word. Thrill might be one of Band-Maid's simplest songs but it's also their most important because they almost certainly wouldn't exist today without it. It's also the first song I heard by them and it made me want to listen to more, so it does its job very well.

Yo! 2014 ... What a year. First earliest in the year BABYMETAL popped on the scene and piqued the interest of thousands of people for "WTF is going on in Japan's music scene", then shortly thereafter, because people were now paying attention to Japan's 'popular music' scene Band-Maid (and bands like Wagaki Band, One Ok Rock, Hello Sleepwalkers, etc) broke into the international scene ... Nowadays i pretty much only listen to Asian acts ... Not to disparage the talent of Western musicians, but the Asians are the 'total package', they don't just go on stage to show you how skilled they are on their instruments, they go on stage to put on a total show (and the audiences come to the shows expecting to be part of that show ... And not just in some random way, the audience come prepared, knowing their parts, so it always adds to the show and never distracts.)

That seem to be part of the circle jerkers backslappers mutual ass kissing society. Where it seems complementing themselves and each other.
