BAND-MAIKO was an April Fool's Day prank in 2018. The joke was fans thought they had changed permanently to Band Maiko! It was so well received they did another one in 2019. It's just songs they have already released but with a Japanese twist, mixing in traditional instruments.

@@Like-a-PROinBERLIN You mean _"Gion-cho"_ yes that was an original. They released a mini album as Band Maiko with 7 tracks. The first 6 are covers of their previous rock songs, including traditional Japanese instruments and sung in a Kyoto dialect.

Sometime you may want to look up the original version, "Secret My Lips" for comparison - although I must say, the Band-Maiko version adds some awesome touches. They even changed the singing to the dialect of the area where Geishas are trained. All kinds of neat details in this everywhere.

Really loved my 6 years in Japan. I would go back in a heartbeat if I could. The music the Traditions the culture you name it. And all the great festivals. I never once had a bad experience with any of the Japanese people not even in the tiniest bit.

There are few musical groups in the world that are so TOGETHER in their attitude towards each other and their musical ability. I think they have to be right near the top, or on top. I'm in my 70's and have seen and heard many groups live from the 50's through today and there are few that can match their overall talent and ability.

Band-Maid giving the male dominated industry a run for their money? Great line, Jen. However, these girls are already at the finish line drinking their tea. Having met them and seen them live, I can honestly say it's worth a long drive / flight to experience this group of ladies on stage. I've never been so moved, entertained and musically satisfied at a concert before.

BM TRIVIA: Bassist MISA is 5'7-1/2", very tall for a Japanese woman, but in this video, she is wearing Tabi and Geta (with 2"+ heels), which makes her around 5'10" in this video. Drummer Akane is 5'6". Saiki is 5'4", Kanami is 5'1", Miku is just over 5'. Akane's first instrument was the trombone, which she still plays. MISA also played woodwinds and brass. Kanami's first instrument was piano. Saiki also plays acoustic guitar. Miku couldn't play guitar before Kanami started teaching her. Saiki has a university degree in economics, although her band mates think of her as a natural airhead. Miku worked for a few years in a maid cafe. Akane and MISA were in the backup band for J-Pop singer, Becky.

There's an interview video where Akane talks about how much she eats. It's incredible that she burns so many calories and has to eat so much. I think it's in the Gold Rush interviews. There are two part with english subtitles. It's entertaining.

So other people filled you in on how to pronounce "Maiko" and what it means; I will just point out that they originally did a song called "Secret My Lips", and this is a redone version, with the lyrics in Kyoto dialect (Kyoto is the capital of Geisha culture). They did this originally as an April Fools joke, with an announcement that Band-Maid were renaming themselves and changing their style.

Hi Jun, you're super nice, welcome to the magical world of Band Maid, I'm a musician an old school Rock guitarist and I came across Band Maid in 2017 and the first song I heard was "The non Fiction Day". and BANG love at first sight, these girls don't miss a beat, every single song a Hit, awesome musicians and gorgeous Saki on Vocals. Kanami is one of the most versatile and really good guitarists I've heard in recent years, in fact she's listed on the official PRS website. Misa no comment killer bass, Akane received compliments from Jimmy Page who wanted to take a photo with her... Miku is crazy and brilliant. WOW one of the best bands I've heard so far and live they are even better. Bye and have a nice day

Hahaha nice video. I enjoyed it very much !! As you see in the comments, a Maiko is an apprentice of becomming a Geisha. The thing is with this traditional still, if you want to become a Geisha, you have to say goodbey to your famely because you will be part of the Geisha famely you are studying at. (Basicly, you cannot escape) Also fun thing, in the beginning you saw Miku writing something in Kanji. World Domination and pronounced as "sekai seifuku", so it was a clue for their upcoming world tour and album.

As if they weren't spectacular enough, Band Maid decides to take an already awesome song, add super-cool sounding Japanese traditional instruments (and there's quite a few in there), dress-up as Maikos (stunning!), and shoot a video..... all as an April Fools joke. I mean..WTF?! These women are FORCES OF NATURE! Oh, and I know at least one time when Band Maid will be in Cleveland. They'll be there in 2035, when they are inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. :)

I was hoping the other instruments played the Shamisen and the flute were by the members of the Wagakki band Beni Ninagawa and Daisuke Kaminaga!! Wishful thinking!! However the instrument Shamisen just enhances the whole tune, impressive!! Incidentally Wagakki band were pencilled in to play in NJ this year but somehow I cannot see it under the circumstances unfortunately!! Love your enthusiasm regarding this great band 😎🤟

well first. if you get a chance to see them. show up early. at the ny shows they walked up to the clubs. like they owned the city. it was such a cool surprise. theres a couple of videos and pics showing what i mean. there big shows can compete with any band. but the small club vibe will always be a blast. jen you might be the same height as them. there hella tiny with huge beauty. i dont even think of them as a female band anymore. just a great band. $$$$jen_nation

B-M is represented by Live Nation (largest music promotors) and was set to play at the 2020 "Rock on the Range" festival in Columbus Ohio, but was cancel due to Covid-19; therefore a good chance they will play Ohio in maybe 2022?

Form Japan. In their latest interview, they announced that they will be streaming live instead of canceling the Budokan live on February 11th. It is sure to become a live version of the new songs. They are not defeated by COVID-19. I am waiting for the official announcement.

It's pronounce "My-Co", hence the play on words no their song 'Secret My Lips'. A Maiko is an apprentice Geisha. They, and by extension, BAND-MAID,, do not consider themselves to be Metal. They do tune down sometimes and MISA has switched to a 5 String. They have some Metal influences they also ha influences of Punk, Funk, Power Pop & Jazz. We didn't get a Band-Maiko video last April Fool's Day because of Covid. But I would suggest doing the other BAND-MAIKO song, 'GioCho' before then, just in case. Or you could save it until then incase there isn't one. Kimchi is a Korean dish, not Japanese. Akane has the biggest appetite of the group, though MISA is a close second, she prefers to drink.

Oh Jen just for your Info the names: Saiki Atsumi aka the Queen :) Kanami Tono the Solo guitarist and Main Songwriter can also play the Piano and composes on Piano Miku Kaboto is like the founder of the Band Rythem guitarist and like the Mother of the Band Misa the Barefoot Assassin on Bass has her custom Bass the Black Smoker and a Gibson SG Custom made Bass And Last but not least my Favorite Akane Hirose the drummer calls herself the drum Gorilla and Loves Food and Anime s and Snoopy from Charlie Brown.

as many have said a Maiko is an Apprentice Geisha..the most amazing thing is this is a band maid song that the music has been rearranged with traditional instruments added and Miku changed the words to be in the geisha dialect..but most amazing of all is Misa has on shoes i would love to know how much saki they had to give her to get that to happen

Another fun fact, the Makoto Shinkai movie entitled "5 centimeters per second" is a science fact. A cherry blossom (sakura) falls at 5 cm/sec in dead air.

Not sure WHY people suggest this as a first Maiko song (ok it was the first they did) as you haven't seen Secret My Lips it sort of takes something away from it, a better choice is Gion cho as that is an original Maiko song then after watching Secret My Lips THEN watch Secret Maiko Lips.

When Akane, the drummer, eats the ramen it is a joke with that she eats all the time, in an interview she said she use to eat all the other band members left overs. Another joke that is hard to see is that MISA, the basist is wearing shoes, which she never do on stage, she is called the barefoot assassin, and usually drinks something from her hip flask. They all have their personas. Miku, the rhythm guitarist and founder of the band is the joyful and a bit crazy one. Kanami, the lead guitarist and the one who writes most of the songs, is very humble when interviewed but can become a bit aggressive on stage, the others call ger Mincho when she gets into that mood. Saiki, the singer, is the cool ice queen. If you ever get to Japan make sure you visit Kyoto and the ancient city Nara. You will find if you are lucky actual Maiko's They are quite stunning. Also do not take pictures of Japanese people without there permission. It is illegal to do so.

The original version "Secret my Lips" is just as awesome. But the way they blend the traditional Japanese instruments, and how they even changed the Japanese dialect for this version is incredible! The funny thing is that this was meant as an April fool's joke! Akane eating the noodles is a bit of an inside joke, about how she's always hungry and eating. To be fair, she does burn more calories than any two of the others in any given song rhat they burn in a whole set.

I fell into the gap between the look of the band and their incredible music. I haven't brought a cd for the past 20 years as I didn't see anything original in what artists where putting out. I'm not saying that I didn't like what was composed I'm just saying I didn't feel the need to become a fan of the work to buy it on cd. However. On the 20th of January I will buy "Unseen world" on cd. Also I've joined the fan club (they have a page translation so it's easier to enjoy it).

Well I agree except they are not giving make bands a run for there money they have taken over and left them in their dust I'm 59 yrs old and they are greatest band I've ever seen all around the best but they need to come to Indy or chicago either one I'm a hour and a half from chicago and two hours from Indy we need a full us tour so who would open for them how about gacharic spin, or doll$boxx kinda one in the same we could throw in mary's blood bring it be well
