When I was in high school, living so far out in the hills we had no TV or radio reception, my girlfriend talked me into going to a concert - cost $10 per ticket, had to drive almost an hour to the venue. I had no idea who they were. Once we got there and they started playing, it was a series of - oh wow, I know this song... I know this song, too! It was the Eagles. Back in 1976, my first concert. Amazing.
At age 66 I can honestly say I'm long time Eagles fan. Although I don't listen to them every day, if one of their songs come on the radio I appreciate hearing it. I guess one could say I can check out, but I can never leave.
Same age, i remember the Eagles being huge in the 70's, saw them in the summer of 77 with fleetwood mac & boz scaggs in Foxboro Mass when i was home on leave from the USAF
@@donsmith8614 Yeah saw Fleetwood Mac that year in San Diego Sports Arena! We were sitting in nose bleed section and my Friend Brian actually had his ears go deaf from the noise! I think it was temporary!
Oh, that's perfect! What a sweet memory. When my son was a baby, I could play certain kinds of music that calmed him down when he was fussy. I listened to a PBS station all the time that played World Music. One day, the music of Zamfir was played (Romanian musician, known as "Master of the Pan flute") and he instantly stopped crying and became serene. I'd never heard of Zamfir before, but I bought some of his CDs asap! Worked like magic to calm my little guy down. He's 31 and 6'2" now, but he still loves that music
ah... i would assume you still love him. unfortunately some parents can play favors. maybe that's what you meant - that you loved him all the same as the "new(er) kid in town", being the younger brother. @@johnryan1798
@@davidrice3337 JD was in, he left before Hotel. JD didn’t want the hard Rock aspect, wanted a bit more country but could see the changes coming. It was his decision and amicable.
@@tnrodgers If you mean John David Souther, he was never an Eagle. Original Eagles were Don Henley, Glen Frey, Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon. Joe Walsh joined them then Leadon quit and was replaced by Don Felder. Randy quit in the middle of the Hotel California tour so they poached Timothy B. Schmitt from Poco. Ironically, Schmitt had replaced Meisner in Poco when the Eagles poached him from Poco. After that they basically stopped being the Eagles and are just a tribute band now (IMHO).
Yeah, and the funny thing is taht people who obviously arent as musically inclined will say 'well thats just an opinion', and then I have to make them see the light so they realize that it really was.
Thanks for sharing the conversation with JD Souther. He's a very insightful guy, and he's not shy about admitting that the whole songwriting profession is just a game of make-believe. It may just be a game of make-believe, but look what magnificent work has resulted from it. Songwriters serve a function in modern culture like storytellers served on ancient cultures. Long may you run, JD!
We boomers proudly claim The Eagles as one of our top ten all-time favorite bands! So miss Randy&Glenn...but so thankful they existed and left us with such great music. Every time I have an mri...my earphones are tuned to the Eagles. 😊
@@ProfessorofRock For sentimental reasons: Take it to the limit by Randy Meissner of course. I also have favorites by album...'72 Eagles: Peaceful easy feeling. '73 Desparado: Tequila Sunrise. '75 One of these nights. '76 Hotel California. '79 The long rub: Heartache Tonight.
My favorite band of all time!! I've loved the Eagles forever and always will!! Don Henley is in a class on his own as a songwriter!! My Mom interpreted the real meaning behind the song!! Thanks for sharing again!!
Given how popular disco was in the late 70's, it just goes to show how successful the Eagles were when they had to compete against disco when it was peppered all over the chart and radio, and still manage to top the chart.
i am so sick n tired of rock n rollers thinking the world revolves around them. these crybabies didn't know to leave other people be. they had to bully everyone with their music tastes. disco was great music too. too bad some people just can't agree to disagree. this is such an american ideal to force our agendas off of to others but then cry and play "victim" when they do it back.@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980
@@marciabee I hope he has seen them perform, but I figure that Adam has interviewed some members of the Eagles, if not all. He's among the best interviewers I've ever seen. He's so respectful and knowledgeable, and it's obvious that those artists being interviewed are enjoying the conversations. He's kind of like a cross between Dick Cavett and Casey Kasem; his musical knowledge and enthusiasm is equal to Kasem, and his gentle sense of humor and ability to put people at ease reminds me of Cavett.
agree adam doesnt bombard his guests or ask annoying questions just about the music and lers guests tell their story and respectful not to ask any personal questions not much here but in uk recall watched bbc entertainment after the news glasto for example interview band artist presenters sometimes ask question.that had nothing to do with glasto or new record adam doesnt do that so they agree to his interviews just about particular song or record.
"Hotel California" has one of the best guitar solos at the end of the song ever ... It is also one of the most overplayed songs of all time. LOL - but even so, I never got tired of it. A true classic. :)
Growing up my mom and I were moving around alot due to our homelessness, I remember many times being the new kid and starting over and over. I always thought of my childhood and teenage years when listening to this song. I know its talking about something different but to me it was about being the new kid in town. Thank you Professor
Yeah, my Dad was a railroad agent and we moved from town to town as I grew up. Four different schools in 8 years. I got along great with military kids that were experiencing the same.
Eagles. A staple of Americana. They don't have to worry about the "New Kids In Town" these days...and they were an inspiration to not to the bands of the 70s and 80s that came after them...but to their fans (new and old). The true legends they are will never fade! Always interesting to hear to about what they were thinking when pulling words and music out of the air. Another great lesson from the Professor!!!
Easily one of the most mystical and magical songs to hail from this band. The harmony, the smooth tones, it is at ease in such a haunting yet beautiful way.
J.D. Souther's a magnificent songwriter! He may have not written a LOT of Eagle's songs but the ones he did are top-notch. Quality over quantity! If this song was written 100 years and crooned by Rudy Vallée, it still would have been a #1 hit! Okay, let me 'splain... I do this dumb thing in my head where I imagine songs as they would sound if sung by someone very different, and the image popped in my head of Rudy Vallée crooning into one of those old-timey microphones while Ginger and Fred dance elegantly: "...You look in her eyes the music begins to play Hopeless romantics here we go again But after awhile you're lookin' the other way It's those restless hearts that never mend..." It's kinda fun, but I don't really recommend this game of imagining different people or characters singing well known songs. I've ruined myself forever for listening to David Bowie sing "Let's Dance" because in my head I'm hearing Elmer Fudd singing, "Wet's dance! Put on yo wed shoes and dance da bwoooos!" and it still cracks me up.
My favorite Eagles song, I think it demonstrates their incredible harmonizing and song writing better than any of their other songs. Just wonderful, thanks for this Professor!!
One of the 45's my parents passed down to me that I wore out. What amazed me as a youngster about this song was the harmony background vocals. Just heavenly...
It was my older brother's for me. He introduced me to the Beatles, Bread, Eagles, Steve Miller, and so much more great music. I credit him with my love of musical exploration.
New Kid in Town is my sentimental fave by Eagles. I remember dozing on the couch in 6th grade, waiting for my mom to fix breakfast. This would come on the radio every morning, and I would finish waking up to it. The song, the smells, and my mom cooking are burned into my soul.
I've been a big fan of the Eagles for nearly 50 years. They wrote and recorded some of the best songs off all time. To this day, I listen to them nearly every day. It's too bad some of the members got so greedy and arrogant resulting in their split and change of personnel. J.D. Souther was an integral part of some of their best songs. A very talented and interesting guy. I enjoyed hearing his stories.
Still have the greatest hits album 🥰As a teenager I played it over and over along with Three Dog Night, ACDC, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Marshal Tucker, Kiss, and so many others. What great music to grow up with!!
My dad didn’t listen to much rock but he would listen to the Eagles. Once while riding down the road I had the greatest hits vol. 2 tape playing (80’s). After “ New Kid in Town” played he asked me to play it again. “I really like that,” he said. It remained one of his favorite songs regardless of genre for decades. I think about him every time I hear it.
Eagles are iconic, duh! Even as a pre-pubescent kid in the late 70s, their song lyrics were so illustrative, picturesque. The vocals/harmonizing are untouchable along with great guitar leads. Songs that stirred the imagination like no other band. As a kid, I didn't want to meet a "witchy woman"! 😬 Simply awesome nearly 50 yrs later!
I immigrated to America in 1978 and entered American High School at age 14. The thing I remember the most is the amazing music I was introduced to everything from Zappa to Zepplin. Then came the Cars, Cheap Trick, and Devo. We are now approaching 60 and immigrating once again, to Spain this time, but my most cherished gift about America is the music. I love your channel. And will continue to watch your videos from my new home.
I never got the feeling the Eagles were singing New Kid about themselves. It's always struck me as a song about the cyclical nature of trends, culture, and popularity in general, more like something they (or anyone) could observe happening.
Love the Eagles, love JD Souther, love this song!! I never connected it with the band feeling insecure. It takes me back to the new guy in our town that I secretly adored, so I always see him in my mind when this song plays.
I really like JD Souther's singing voice. NOt only great songwriters, but they all had great, unique voices that fit different songs. Joe Walsh had a voice to match his guitar.
Really, the song that has aged the best for me is "New Kid in Town". All are so iconic that they've become wallpaper. I've wonder what would their music catalog would have looked like if Dan Fogeberg had joined the Eagles. Would it have been a plus or a minus. Was it possible for them to have been bigger? @@ProfessorofRock
@@hbofbyu1- I’ve often wondered why Dan Fogelberg was never asked to join The Eagles, since many of the members played or sang on his records. He would’ve definitely made them better - not that they really needed improving, but Fogelberg was a ridiculously talented artist; a multi-instrumentalist who could sing like a canary and one of the best lyricists in rock/pop, IMO. He was taken way too soon and is sorely missed. R.I.P., Dan, Glenn and Randy. 💔
I suppose Irving Azoff figured he could make more money with Dan being solo. Both Fogelberg and Jackson Browne were probably stronger marketed as singer songwriters. Meanwhile Azoff has a half billion dollars.@@crusheverything4449
@@ProfessorofRock Twice. One time in the late 90s when Felder was still in the band. And I’m guessing around 2008 with Steuart Smith now on guitar. Paul Carrack was opening on the later gig and basically played a Greatest Hits set and blew everyone away.
I learn so much here Professor. I don't doubt JD here at all when he talks about the "New Kid in Town" being their own, more mature selves. So often when you talk to rock stars from the past they are absolutely blindsided by a spouse or partner not sticking around. In particular I remember Rod Stewart saying he was shocked that Rachel Hunter wanted out. The story repeats.... Great job, Adam!
hey man this is a great channel, i've been a musician for decades now but haven't been playing much the last few years, but your videos inspired me to reconnect with some old musical friends and... the band is back together! Thanks!
Never realized that JD Souther was in some ways a "silent partner" in the Eagles. Seemed like he was in some ways almost a full-fledged member but just didn't perform with them. Interesting introspection by him concluding that they just "make shit up". Well, yes, but it's a lot harder than he makes it sound. Everybody would be a rock star if all you had to do was "make shit up".
@@jeanneholden7102 Yes, forgot about that! Such an interesting history and dynamic surrounding the Eagles, not all of it sweetness and light, especially and obviously regarding Don Felder. That must have been tricky for JD Souther to navigate when the Eagles became so huge. I guess the royalty checks he must have gotten from them recording his songs made it a bit easier!
Saw the Eagles Live in 2019. Amazing and outstanding concert. Glen's son Deacon held his own for his dad. Then they did Joe Walsh's 2 smash hits as well. So glad I was to go. Thanks again Adam
Thanks Professor... that was a great interview 👍🏼 the 70s were a beautiful time in my first years of life and everything was new. The Eagles greatest hits always fascinated me with the eagle skull protruding from the album cover. I loved sitting and listening to it with my Mom and Dad when we first moved to Phoenix AZ in 76' and my Dad was enlisted in the Air force. Great memories...thanks for the show. 👍🏼
This is my favorite Eagles song. Well Best of My Love and Lying Eyes a close second. Love the harmonies. This actually won a Grammy Award for Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices, which interestingly enough is no longer a category for a Grammy.
This was the first 45 record and an introduction as an 11 year old kid in Jersey…my first experience of being emotionally connected to a song that still resonates with me as a 58 year old Pop Pop!!! To this day it still hits me deep in my soul and cannot figure out why. Love this song and LOVE this band!!
We saw them in 1994 during the Hell Freezes Over tour on a hot summer's night outside at a Southern amphitheater, just lost ourselves in the music and it was heavenly. I'll never forget it. These were the songs of my teenage, college, and young married life.
Love The Eagles…grew up with them. My parents loved so many genres of music, my childhood was full of music from every decade and pretty much every genre except heavy metal (still not a fan). 56 and still love The Eagles…only thing I regret is never getting to see them live.
Never thought it was about a particular band or person. It was just a great song, like so many other Eagles' tracks, with great lyrics, a cool rhythm, and excellent fills and solos.
Donkey Kong! That was a favorite console game! I also loved Defender, remember that one? I play golden area console games to this day with a windows PC emulator called MAME :) One of these days I will get into the various plug and play hardware that provides arcade control buttons and joysticks. ATM it's all keyboard and thus all available games aren't fully playable. Great choice of material for this morning's post. Eagles are a tremendous band. The song story is familiar - a lot of artists have received great acclaim for composing "humble" songs :)
That was a great interview! As a big Eagles fan I always heard of JD but this was the first time I heard him I’d love to hear an hour interview with him . His life, how he met Don and Glen and some back stories
40 million copies of their first greatest hits album sold in America?! I think that may have been a little intimidating for the "new kids." Great episode on one of the greatest bands ever. Thanks. Professor
I just heard New Kid in Town just a couple of days ago in the car with my hubby and daughter. My husband and I talked about what that song reminded us of. For him, it was the skating rink and the sound of wheels rolling over a wooden floor and for me, it was riding with my parents either traveling or running errands with my mom with me and my youngest older brother in tow or visiting with mt dad's side of the family in just over the boarder in Mexico. Maybe its that slightly latin flavor in the melody😊
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Lol! I tend to remember things fairly clearly. Maybe its because those memories are precious to me but I think its just that music has such visceral ties for me😊 I often surprise people with how much I remember or that I can pinpoint dates or years based on my ability to remember what I was doing when I was listening to one song or another☺ Its not perfect recall, but its enough to be pretty sure👍
Professor, terrific installment, especially with JD Souther...wow! New Kid in Town and Lying Eyes evoke memories, emotions, and an ease of life being a kid in the small town of New London, CT. Sun-setting summers crammed in the back seat of a no AC car, windows down, breeze blowing with my sister wrapping up a day at the beach with mom.
We grew up with The Eagles in the 70s in California. This year I started listening to their Legacy alblum on my phone when outside. Then I zeroed on on The Long Run album. It came out when I was at UCLA and we all ike it then. But I just can't stop listening to it now. I like rock so The Disco Strangler, Those Shoes and Teenage Jail are my favorites. King of Hollywood is an underrated gem. I agree that they are probably the best American band, the American Beatles. Great interview with Mr. Souther!
I saw the Eagles in concert 4/1/2023. It was the Hotel California tour. By far the best concert I've ever been to, just wish I'd have been able to see them while Glenn was still alive.
I have Hotel California on 8 Track, also Billy Joel’s The Stranger, and Boston. My dad gave the to me saying, ‘Maybe they’ll be worth something someday’.
Living in Jacksonville, FL in the 70's, I won the Hotel California album from a radio show. Of course I had heard of the Eagles but that was my first album I had of them. Love the Eagles, always have.
Another great interview w/JD, what a nice guy. The Eagles are complicated, but after the Beach Boys, they're among the defining sounds of SoCal in the '70s. (Then separately, they each became part of the soundtracks to the '80s.) In all fairness, these other amazing musicians (Joel, Springsteen) were around in the '70s themselves, talented and already successful in their own right, I think. Nice to hear about "Uncle Cros'", too. Funny how they didn't know that they were the "new kid in town" until they weren't, and now that they've outlasted all the rest, everyone playing music and rocking together well into their '70s, who cares.🤷♀️
Great channel! So many good to pick from! As a teenager during most of the 70s, I listened a lot to: Yes, Genesis (with Peter Gabriel), Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Band, Manfred Mann’s Earth band (Solar Fire) and Aphrodite’s Child (a Greek prog band with Vangelis and Demis Roussos). And CCR if it was party time🎉 Eageles are great, but I was a bit more prog back then. Supertramp was also outstanding! It was also in the early 70s I went to my first ever live consert with the great Frank Zappa and Mothers of Invention. A fantastic experience I still remember well so many years later.
Pole Position! I once, and only once, ran the whole course and all bonus courses with NO crashes. I was "in the zone", it was a blast. Thanks for the happy memory!
Great interview! Song writers like Mr. Souther are the special ingredient that so many bands are missing. The storytelling in Eagles songs connect with the brain and heart as well as the ears.
If you ever thought your friend was cool for wearing parachute pants one day, and the very next day you made fun of him until he cried…. You may enjoy the heck out of the content of this channel!
Great session, my friend invited a few of us to fly into Hershey PA. TO see the Eagles/ with Dan Fogel erg band. One of the best concerts I have ever seen. Tremendous talent on that stage. Dan and band joined the eagles on stage at the end on the night. Really amazing! Thank Professor. Keep the great shows coming.
I didn't hear the Cuban influence until he said that, now I definitely can. JD Souther is still looking good. I never thought about New Kid in Town as a gun slinger band worried about a younger buck knocking them off so they write a song smash hit about it, so much for being knocked off, lol. On one of the greatest albums too. Great interview professor JD is a deep thinker
Imagine being so talented yet so humble that you fear that there is a up and comer that could replace you. Where the Eagles are concerned, there will never be another. Sure there will be talent and success for others, but to be as legendary as the Eagles is a once in a lifetime achievement.
I Stan this band and love hearing anything about them. Thanks so much POR! RIP to my fave Glenn Frey and to Randy Meisner🕊❤! JD, Jackson Browne and Bob Seger are my favorite song writers. Edit: I was just listening to New Kid In Town on my roof last night cause I wanted to hear Glenn sing. I saw the new line up at MSG last month and they sounded so great despite Glenn's absence.
I always took the lyrics to this song literally as opposed to metaphorically, as in being about an actual romantic relationship, especially with how heartfelt Glenn Frey sings it.
The New Kid In Town is my favorite Eagles song. I relate to that song deeply , not so much as an artist, but when I step into a new place and am loved at first, but when someone else comes along , I feel I'll be forgotten
Love anything Eagles...My best friend got me Hotel California for Christmas the year it came out, when I got it, it was already opened...She said she had to hear it before she gave it to me, could help herself from opening it...LOL...At that time I had all their albums...Good old days as a teen.
I remember this song's title had resurfaced as a catch-phrase. Back when it was released, Bill Murray had just joined the cast of Saturday Night Live and they used the song's title as a headline!
My girlfriend lived on D avenue in Coronado from '74 to 78 so I spent a lot of time there. I just spent a month in the area. Imperial Beach is the place to go nowadays. Hard to imagine considering what I. B. was in the 70's.
"New kid" is one of those Eagles Classics that has always fascinated me. I took it literally when I first heard it, but I also prefer trying to include the original writer's attitudes which is why it's important to listen to what JD has to say. I'm also slightly ashamed that I (think I) didn't hear this particular song until I was in my teens. So many other Eagles classics came my way while I was still wearing diapers.
