I saw The Eagles for the first time at Anaheim Stadium in 1975. My favorite Eagles song remains Tom Waits' "Ol 55". Btw, the bungalow apartment where Glenn Fry, J.D. Souther, and Jackson Browne lived in Echo Park during the early 70s is still standing on Laguna Ave.

Thank you for this Aimee. I had a work associate who was a friend of Glenn and I never did get to meet him but I swear that if I did the only thing I wanted to tell him was that I thought New Kid in Town was the best song ever written non-Beatles category. And also to confirm that he did the background vocs in FM but that’s kind of obvious.

This Eagles critique you put together, Aimee, was impeccably done! I just loooooooved your analysis of New Kid In Town ! ! ! I think YOU may be the masterpiece here. When I first heard you play and sing, I was so distracted from the awesome Eagles vocals and musicianship that you so accurately described that I couldn't decide if I should continue searching for Eagles live performances to watch the rest of my evening, OR begin searching for AimeeNolte's performances ! ! ! ! You are very talented, girl ! Are you a session artist by chance? So yeah, I also grew up with the Eagles, starting with Southern California in the late '70's. (I lived in San Diego) I always knew that the Eagles were meticulous about harmonies and blending, but you truly honored them by your video, Aimee. Thank you for your time and effort to do perfect justice to the Eagles! You truly are a musical gem ! ! ! 😁😁😍😍 P.S. I will definitely look into your nebula thing!

Whenever I listen to this song, when it reaches the "tears on your shoulder" bit, I always think "this is my favourite moment in all the Eagles' body of work". I always maintain that opinion, right up until "..and you're still around.... oh my, my", where I think "oh, no...wait... this!" I hold true to that for almost 20 seconds, until the A to Am and the "oooh"s that follow. I feel so fickle. Edit: Actually, thinking about it, that pretty much epitomises the theme of the song.

@@AimeeNolte That cadence to get back down to E is very reminiscent of when you analysed Here, There and Everywhere recently (Am to B7 to Em) except it unexpectedly resolves to major rather than minor. You're expecting a II-V-I in G but what you get is a bIV-V-I in E. My favourite part of the song!

Greetings from the UK, big Eagles fan here, in fact they are my fav band ever. I prefer the pre 1977 line-up, especially the period 1972 - 1975, but pretty much everything they have touched (including the solo outings from Henley, Frey, Walsh etc) has been amazing. What a band, truly the best of the best, and such an American icon! Great channel Aimee!

My wife and I were 70's high school kids. Last May we flew from AZ to Austin to finally see them live at ages 63 and 62. Now I am a retired coach, principal, county superintendent. I've seen it all and believe me - big boys don't cry. The second song was Vince Gil singing New kid in town. By 8 measure in I was absolutely in tears. I turned to my wife and said...You didn't see this! Man it was great!

Forty-eight years ago today (1976!), our family relocated to Berrien Homes; 1821 Council Dr., Bldg E in the Harbor! As we settled down in the neighborhood, I really was a "New Kid In Town"-Next month'll be 41 yrs. (8/31/83, respectfully!): I was starting Lakeview School in St. Joe, MI; in Ms. Janet Cook's classroom, the other students were like, "People, we have a newcomer today...a new kid in town"-and right now, It is why I love the song more now than in the days!!

J.D. Souther was a guest speaker at an in-service training I attended in Nashville several years ago on behalf of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI). He talked about New Kid In Town and described it precisely as you did…an anthem to the fact that there is always someone better and fresher coming along to knock you off your pedestal. J.D. played and sang the song with an acoustic guitar and had everyone mesmerized. Also talked about his time hanging out and writing with Glen Frey and Jackson Brown. Fantastic experience for all the aspiring songwriters in attendance.

Aimee, this was certainly the best analyse of some popular song that I ever saw on internet!!! Yes, I adore this Eagles' masterpiece so let's say I am a bit subjective about it, but you really mentioned and explained all important details of this song - lyrics and meanings behind those words, nice harmony details, back vocals details, etc etc etc .. I especially like those smart transitions from one key to another, those slick II-V-I phrases and that "melancholic" major to minor chord detail which is an ancient trick but still works well after decades and decades. Dear Aimee, thank you so much for this video. At first sight this song doesn't look so musically smooth and sophisticated, but everyone who tried to play it seriously (myself included) understood what treasure lies inside, behind the curtains. Well done, you are the best!!! 👏👏👏👏👏🎵🎶🎹🙌🤗

I'm amazed at how what you Aimee, and many of your commenters say the song is about, and what I always assumed the song was about, and how BOTH my interperpritation and your interpretation BOTH work. All my life I always believed the song was/is about what it's like to be a guy who is gorgeous to look at, when you move to a new school. For a while you're king of the hill, but, then again, "they will never forget you 'till somebody new comes along." New, and even MORE gorgeous to look at than you are. I was 14 and moved to Florida and I was introvert and it took me so long to fit in the new environment, I would go back home each summer to visit home and the line from the song that hit me was "even your old friends treat you like your someone new", everytime I went back to my home town I felt like was "someone new" and outsider so I was stuck in a weird vortex between my hometown and my new town I moved to!

First of all, favorite Eagles song. I knew “Tears on your shoulder” first as an interpolation in Stuck in the 90s by Moxy Fruvous, but when I heard the modulation in New Kid in Town I was hooked. Secondly, you’ve probably already heard Jonathan Coultons love letter to this song in which he did his best to faithfully record every part. Third, Jason Neubauer is incredible and I’m extremely lucky to share the stage with him every once in a while. Lastly, the greatest gift my father gave my sister and I is an understanding of chords. We would listen to music on road-trips and he would hold up fingers to show progressions. He would quiz us on chord changes. My degrees are in music and I tested out of my Aural theory classes based on that practice. Wonderful video, thank you.

My take on the “hopeless romantics” line is a couple that shouldnt be but cant help it. They know the breakup is coming (again) but they’re hopeless romantics. The music, she’s beautiful, he gives her that smile and says “one dance for old time’s sake”. “Here we go again” and they’re off to 6 stormy months that everyone could see coming, including them.

Thank you Aimee for the great analysis. Putting any details aside, I believe the key to this song is the buildup. Even with the studio version, you hear it. The magic is that the buildup is not so obvious like Stairway to Heaven. If you are not careful, you will not recognize this very gradual, sensitive, and delicate buildup. It becomes clear when you think about how it starts and ends.

I have a rotating list of favorite Eagles song. I always tell people their greatest hits album is the highest (or near to highest) selling album of all time. Then I pause before saying that this greatest hits album came out before the Hotel California album. My current favorite of theirs is a live version of How Long, also by J.D. Souther. There's something about the melody and cadence of it, in conjunction with the lyrics, that I just can't get enough of.

You have a beautiful voice. Excellent video and breakdown of the structure of this song. The discussion of the fills and trade offs and how they set up the foundation of the song first is very instructional. Almost like filling a tapestry. Love it!

Awesome video, in every respect. "New Kid In Town" is my favorite Eagles song, too, mostly for the chord progressions, but your insights into the lyrics & the song's backstory just added to my appreciation!

Thanks for this! Really hope they don't take it down. The detail in this song is astonishing, the vocals of course, and all the interlocking guitar/Rhodes stuff, the harmonics in the intro. The guitar riff coming into the choruses is devastating, and sets up the last one so beautifully. The distortion on that one lick! Everybody had the 1976 Greatest Hits album when I was growing up, but I never got the Eagles until this one came out. I never get tired of listening to this.

Thanks for this Aimee, NKIT has always been a real sleeper regarding it's beautiful complexity. I've worked on the guitar parts on and off for years once I discovered how rich this song is with its musical structure.
