Today I am taking a short walk between Bang Na and Udomsuk neighborhoods in Bangkok. I was coming from a coffee meeting at BITECH in Bangkok where I was discussing the state of innovation with my friend over a cup of brew. We discussed and contrasted two types of innovation, disruptive and iterative. So many people today want to come up with a disruptive innovation right out of the gate, but for the most part it takes far more discipline to pursue iterative innovation. Spending time to get it right, and making small changes along the way. You have to be able to see the long game and that's what iterative innovation is.
After our talk I took a stroll down one of my favorite Bangkok Sky Bridges from Bang Na to Udomsuk. This Skybridge keeps you off the street and allows you to enjoy a stroll between these two Bangkok neighborhoods.

Great points on disruptive vs iterative innovation, I love the topics you talk about on these walks! I've been this far out of the center of town a few times, it's not a bad spot, but not a great one either.

Initial improvements in design or production can be greater than follow on fine-tuning. Depends on how inefficient old ways were. Doing something that has worked on a test basis, but hasn't been proven to work at full scale is where it gets wild. How much risk is enterprise able to absorb? You have plopped our brains into an interesting dynamic yet again, dana. Take care.

Thanks, Hu! I think you are right on, especially when it comes to production, but the flip side of that coin is the downtime during change or cost to build parallel. It's always an interesting dynamic between iteration and disruption, of course this is a spectrum and there are many notches between the two ends.

As someone who has worked in operations for much of my career, innovation is usually driven top-down and inspired by personal events. When I worked for a tutoring/educational service, my CEO was innovation-driven because he wanted to find an alternate way for his own children to succeed outside of the traditional core curriculum and typical that US kids are forced to go through. When I had my own franchise ballroom studio, we were constantly advised of violation of protocols by our franchise headquarters, simply because they were always concerned with their own piece of the bottom line. They despised innovation and would penalize us for trying to step outside the bounds of normal sales and teaching approaches.

I think looking at it from top down, is another way of saying that innovation is driven by culture. It's funny that an education company was one of your very innovative jobs, I worked with an education and training company in Thailand that taught innovation but their culture was the antithesis of innovation, ish happens. That sucks about your ballroom studio.

Your thoughts on iterative innovation remind me of a video on RU-vid from several years ago called Everything's a Remix, which shows how most things that are renowned for their novelty and innovation are, in fact, just the next step in a long process of innovation.

I liked the ide of the 5 story building, living on toppof it, showrooms, store, maybe even a concept bar/restaurant maybe a space for people to be creativ maybe ? Call it idea studio, maybe people can rent for podcast or youtube studio with pro gear? Make it like a mini google concept 😅 hang out, food, tabletennis , be creativ , everyone just want to hang there and do stuff on top you sell food and t-shirts aso.

Ecclesiastes says it best, “There is nothing new under the sun”. You cannot create something the world has never seen, what you can create is something that builds on it, or presents the idea in a fresh or novel way. Trying to create something never seen, will only hamper your ability to create anything at all. Iterative steps are what create the really great things.

When buildings like that do not sell, it is sometimes an issue of the actual ownership being under contention. I have had to deal with that a few times.

Udom Suk has many food stalls at night. Bang Na has the Bitec and Bangkok Mall, largest shopping mall in Asia also you can take 5 minutes taxi to Mega Bang Na where you can spend a whole day there with kids for recreation. There is also water world in the midway. Would be even more convenient when BTS Airport line completed. Kindly keep us up with the latest status of Bangkok Mall. KOK KUEN KRAP.🙏😄
