For me personally, cash is the top priority. Download the metro maps onto the phone. I usually purchase overseas data plan from my home Country so I don't have to switch SIM cards. Before the service was available, I would get a local prepaid SIM card from the airport counter and make topups at convenient stores as and when needed. While travelling on BTS or MRT are quite convenient, there are places without stations close by. My top choice is to use the "Grab" mobile app to book rides, this service is similar to Uber, the advantage is you do not need to know how to say the destination name, just key it into the app and book. The price is comparable to Tuktuk or Taxi and if there are 3 or 4 passengers, the price becomes comparable to MRT/BTS. The mobile Apps I use a lot while in Thailand : LINE (for texting Thai friends), GoogleMaps (travel and food), Grab (get a taxi)
Hello Chris, thanks for using the MRT while you were in Bangkok! We saw your video and wanted to let you know that foreign students actually can buy the MRT Student Card if they meet our conditions: Must currently be a student in school or university whose age is not older than 23 years and also be able to present the student or university ID along with citizen ID during time of purchase. We apologize for the miscommunication and have reminded our teams. Hope you enjoyed the ride on the MRT Blue Line and continue to use it to get around Bangkok in the future. Thank you.
@@RetiredWorkingForYou by the way, incase you’re interested in a RU-vidr agency here, check out Gushcloud Talent Agency Thailand. I’m under contract with them and I thought you might be interested, have a good night! Happy Chinese New Year 🧧
Go to Bangkok Bank and tell them you’re a tourist and want to apply for a bank account. They’ll give you a form which you take to Canadian embassy in Bangkok and costs $50 CAD to get the form stamped. They fill out and stamp that form while you wait and then you bring it to the bank. You need to deposit about 500 baht into your newly opened account as minimum payment. Maybe another 200 baht for your ATM card. I did it on January 2020. Easy Peasy.
Great information Chris & Adam. For anyone just arriving here, it would be worth checking out a few different banks as it seems that they all have there own criteria for opening an account. When I first came here on a tourist visa, I opened an account with The Bangkok Bank, very easy. Welcome to Thailand Adam, have a great time 🙂
Thank you fir this info as I did get worried. It is likely that my next trip to Thailand would be a 90 day so that I can apply for my marriage visa - so this refusal had me worried
@@bengunn4373 You'll have no problem in your situation Ben. Register with immigration that you are staying with your girlfriend or her family. You have to do this within 24 hours of arrival. Immigration will give you a letter to confirm this (there might be a small charge for the letter). Ask you girlfriend to stand as guarantor for you. She will have to show her I.D. In this situation, most banks will allow you to open an account.
i was able to open a Thai bank account (even with a tourist visa) by getting a certification from my embassy that I was planning to apply for a retirement visa . I submitted it to the bank , and Voila ! they gave me a bank account to where i can deposit the 800,000 baht deposit money required to apply for a retirement VISA . (Note: It's been over a year now and i only have a couple of thousand dollars worth of Thai baht in my Thai bank account. Ive been living outside of Thailand Since the Wuhan virus outbreak began)
Hi Chris and Adam! I am hoping to come to Bangkok on the Special Tourist Visa in April...would you be able to tell me if there are many tourists about and are any hostels open? I'm a solo traveller and really rely on meeting people! Thank you guys, loved the video :)) ✨❣️🌟
Great information Chris I needed that video four years ago when I just started traveling to Thailand. I still think I would get lost traveling the train system. Thanks for Posting
I would suggest to check out Kasikorn Bank along Sukhumvit. There are a couple of branches that allow tourists that stay short term to get a checking account together with a VISA Electron or Maestro card. Other than that it was a pretty good starter kit.
Anyone watch “Looper”, as many have said it is present day Chris with Chris from the past. I continue to live Thailand through your vids! I still have my sim from when I was in Thailand, wonder if it works.... Thanks Chris! Edit: Looking forward to the 3 month rental vid alot!!!
Got my mobile data plan in same store 2years ago, nice to watch it again... miss Thailand... wanna go back asap.. your vids keeps memories alive, Thanks a lot🇨🇷❤🇳🇱
Why didn't Adam just say he was staying with you. He could have used your address and you could have said you didn't require him to have a rental contract because he is family.
My Bangkok Starter Kit will be hanging out with you! ^_^ Then I'll work on all the other stuff.. Great video by the way Chis, now I know where everything is.
One comment about the BTS rabbit card -- another option is the BTS day pass which I did when I was in Bangkok. You pay a flat rate for one day which is a bargain and then you can ride the BTS as much as you want that day for just the flat rate you paid.
I go to a local Thai restaurant here in Pattaya and love one particular meal, rice with duck, they have a bowl of garlic and chilles and spring onions in a glass and you can have as much as you want, oh and water with ice is free too. all for 50baht amazing value and it tastes great!
@@Dasm. It’s very near Friendship Supermarket on South Pattaya road, there’s a row of small Thai Restaurant’s, on google maps to the right of Friendship Supermarket there’s a very long name in Thai for one of the them, it’s one of those!
Question: although the information you provide throughout your channel are fantastic, but what would you say if I would wanna hire you and your experiences when coming to Thailand ? Not only would I appreciate your time and effort, as it would most likely save me a lot of hassle and possible mishaps, but I also believe that your help could put me in a much better place much faster. For this advantage and the adventure of hanging out with you for a little while, I would be willing to spend more than just a beer or two. Please think about my offer, as I am trying to get to Bangkok as soon as possible. Thanks for your consideration, your Canadian viewer Rocco from Victoria BC.
Dude why would u ever think a guy whos retired is willing to fuck around with you in bangkok, even if youre paying him? Just leave the guy alone and learn around by yourself instead of being a little bitch
What I miss from Bangkok those Garlic and Oil Chicken, from a street vendor near Khaosan near that Svenson Ice Cream parlor. Pomagranade Juice, the BBQ in Khaosan... Thai street food is the best. Also that Green Curry Chicken and that Masala Curry. Now, Im envious.
You can get a prepaid sim card with Internet (about 50GB) data plan in Thailand, Vietnam, cambodia, Singapore , China , India for only about $2 a week (price varies a little from country to country. or 300GB for $15-20 a month .
Hey sorry man I like you it's just that I'm not feeling good right now I have covid-19 symptoms I resubscribed I said symptoms because it's just because I got my second shot of Medina and it's making me feel rough but that's okay I'll be better in a day or two and then I'm 95% immune
Starter kit: Sim card Sunscreen Cash My summer hat 😅 Tip: Ayutthaya ancient city where they filmed mortal combat movie, awesome place to visit 😊 there’s a cafe near by 5-10min called Chata Thammachart, so beautiful there 😊🙏🏻
In in Pattaya, the Lady Drink Scam has been around for decades The concept is quite simple. A punter pays 100-150 for a drink for a Girl assuming it is alcohol. Then the Bar switches the drink for water, apple Juice etc and the punter is unaware of the deception
Everyone that travels a lot should get a card that reimburses ATM fees. There are several out there; Charles Schwab offers one in the U.S. Basically the way it works is you're reimbursed all ATM fees at the end of the month. Anytime I go to Thailand it always saves me a couple of hundred dollars per trip.
Now CEO has recruited new subordinate! For mobile package, you can find cheaper plan from on-line shop (Lazada or Shoee), my unlimited internet SIM from True costs around 1,400 THB and AIS/DTAC 1,700 THB per year! and you can buy another SIM for phone call that valid for 1 year as well with promotion.
Nice one Chris. And you guys make a great double act! (BTW, buddy - sent an email to u (on 4th Feb) re extra $$ for PAY IT FORWARD... pls check it out:-) Good Luck in Thailand Adam, enjoy!
Great Vid Chris,Adam won't need Tinder,just walk around and the girls will line up,yes those 220B ATM fees are a rort,our Biggest Bank in Australia charge no ATM fees,even if you bank with a competitor,C'mon pull your finger out Thai Banks,like you my Fave Thai dish is Pad Krapow,i'd love to know the location of Pad Krapow Lady for my next visit (-;
Another great video Chris......... Think Adam might get the blogging bug if he spends too much time with you......! considering its Adams first time in BKK he was brave with the Krapaw with lots of chillies.
Michael Ireland I wish you get better soon. Every thing what happen to you, or you ill,I beg Buddha bless you getting better. Please fight your problem. Regarding from Thailand.
1100 Baht is a lot for a data plan, AIS has a prepaid 15GB 5G plan for 399. If you are resident you can get internet add on package for 200 per month 20gb (4g, 1 year 2400). Maybe a tip for next time. Nice video by the way :-)
Hey Chris, Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa. Stumbled across your channel and thoroughly enjoy it. Was in Thailand a little bit more than a year ago, just before all this COVID stuff. Spend 3 days in Bangkok, know it is not long enough, and the rest in the northern parts, Chiang Rai and mostly Chiang Mai where my daughter lives. Planning my next trip which will be much longer, even considering Thailands Retirement VISA. All the best and keep up the good work. Marius
9:20 The UK's cheap for phones. I get unlimited everything, no contract, for £20 ($27) a month. Fast 4G. I can upload a 15 minute video to RU-vid in less than ten minutes, and downloads and videos are never a problem.
I got mine on my Tourist visa I notice he asked for a checking account I don’t think they give those only saving accounts and I was only staying in a hotel so maybe things have changed I don’t know maybe this helps I’ve been here for two years that was right when I got here and it was in Phuket may be different have a great day
Excellent starter kit, Chris!!! The Tourism Authority of Thailand should hire you to make their travelling video guides for when the country opens up again. By the way, is your nephew single? (just kidding LoL)
Banking: Transferwise Borderless Account. He won't get screwed on the exchange rate. It's da bomb. Or... Find a Thai person who will vouch for him and let him use their address. And damn, man, you have the best channel for food places. Imma get some pad grapao tomorrow.
My starter kit would definitely consist of..; 1 bottle each of SIngha, Leo and Chang.. drunk in that order. Then spend a moment contemplating which one I liked best. Creative, entertaining and informative video as always Chris..;0) Adam ya gonna love your stay in the kingdom. Do everything you wish to do and more. Your uncle has a lot of wisdom and experience to pass on.
I got out of quarantine on Fri on a TR visa - re: the phone, dtac gave me a 90 day validity sim with unlimited data, no free calls or SMS, but with your favourite messaging app you'll do most of that on data anyway. Only THB 599 total.
I somehow came up with the idea of buying AIS prepaid phone cards for my GF and I before leaving the States. Turned out to be one of the smarter things I did. Her phone has an eSIM programmed for Verizon, and she didn't want to blow it away, so I brought my old Pixel 4 and she's on it with her Thai family right now. Scored some major points :)
Chris, your bat crazy but in a brilliant way. Your nephew is super fun too. (He could easily pass as ur son lol). Awesome content as usual, a great 12 (quality) minutes spent there. Thumbs up!!
A few years ago, I was able to open an account with Krung Thai Bank on a tourist visa. it may help to stick the the banks that after the most foreigner-friendky: Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn, SCB, Krung Thai Bank. They all have their own criteria. Don't take no for an answer.
So love seeing your videoes, I found you yesterday and have been subscribing and binge-watching your channel. Brings back memories to see Terminal 21 and Asoke area. Also love the diversity of your channel, a lot of great information, and cool videos on condos and houses but also on thaifood and culture, plus I love to see you give back and support the thais, this is how it should be. I would love to have a condo in Bangkok and one in Isan. My favorite place in Thauland is Isan, I was in Buriram, Korat, Udon Thani and Nong Khai - could be cool to see a house/condo video on living in Isan. I know Udon Thani has many westerners in that area. Keep up the good work and so happy to find your channel - greeting from Copenhagen, Denmark.
First of all I use a translator. We will soon have a travel combination card. Which can be used for both train, subway, boat, tour bus in the name of mangmoom card.
