Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 13:42.
This is an instructional tutorial RU-vid video lesson teaching my 5-string banjo version of the gospel tune "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" on 5-string bluegrass banjo. It's a "popular Christian hymn written in 1907 by Ada R. Habershon with music by Charles H. Gabriel. The song is often recorded unattributed and, because of its age, has lapsed into the public domain" (Wikipedia).
As usual, I teach the instrumental tune lick by lick using on-screen tablature, then put it together -- slowly at first, then faster toward the end, adding guitar audio overlay, as well as guitar chords.
This is my own version, which reflects my desire not only to teach the melody of the song, but also to teach certain licks that I deem to be important (at least to me) and fit the given space. So there are parts where I stray from the pure melody, such as the ending sequence, in this case. My main goal, as always, is to have fun playing the banjo.
I have posted this teaching video for instructional purposes only and, in my opinion, it constitutes fair use:
"The fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright."
Free tab and play-along tracks at different speeds are available at my website, littlerockbanjo.com.
If you haven't listened to the recording of this song on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's first "Circle" album, I highly recommend that you do so.
Hope you enjoy.

How many of you are like me? Sort of visually impaired to the extent that I have use three brain connections to play a note. ~See, think, process and then try to play. 📌With this style of video instruction, I can hear a soothing voice going piece by piece, playing the roll. I put the iPad at my feet and play what he does as he does it. Ears to fingers...two brain processes. Then, I stop and back it up to look at the written part and it all makes sense. There is so much show in this style of banjo playing. Still love clawhammer but there is no reason I can't do both. ⛩🎶〰 Thanks Bill. You make me want to visit Arkansas.

got it! after couple of days of sitting and learning, I managed to master it and now start working on speed and accuracy. Bill, thanks a lot!. Being from a county (Poland), where number of people playing bluegrass banjo sums up to probably 10 or 15 is not so easy to find good teaching materials. I was working on banjo for couple of months some... 15years ago, when back in Chicago. Now I started it again, to get the rust off my fingers. Your materials are hell of help for me, so please accept my appreciation for the great work You do!

It’s been a struggle for me to learn banjo, but you have a natural born talent to break things down into bite-size nuggets that make it MUCH easier and more enjoyable to learn! You are an awesome teacher! Your tabs are great too! Have you considered creating a banjo “parking lot” picker tab book in pdf to sell? No one has a decent, comprehensive (say top 100) bluegrass tab book. I’ll buy number one! Then you could sell lesson videos on the ones you don’t have on RU-vid.

Bill, after one year of banjo learning , I have to thank you again. I used RU-vid a lot and tabs and real books as well. But I always liked your clear explanation and example playing. And not to forget, your different speed guitar backups, to start slow and speed things up. Thank you, thank you thank you.

I love this, thanks so much Bill. In just a couple months I have gone from 0 experience to being able to play this and a few other songs at a medium pace, thanks to your excellent teaching. I really appreciate it! Request: Could you cover "You Are My Sunshine" soon? It's my daughter's favorite song and I'd love to be able to play a bluegrass version for her. Thanks again, much appreciation from NC!

Yes, I agree The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band version is awesome. Love this stuff. Thanks for posting. I will have to check out your site. Trying to play 3 finger style again after quitting years ago. I just have to remember not to rush any of it. Thanks for the excellent lesson. Tried to go to your site but my browser keeps telling me you have a Potential Security Threat at your site. Can you check into that or explain please. Thanks.
