My family's got no room to talk. Back in the 90's, ostrich meat was supposed to be the next big thing, and my grandparents jumped on board. They had all the equipment for incubating the eggs (these kiln like things), 10 acres of fenced in property for raising them, and even a side operation for rheas. I was a little kid and thought it cool as fuck, these giant ass birds hanging out basically in the backyard. They also had a ceramic shop for painting those huge eggs that grandma would take to craft shows. They had that business ironed out pretty good. And then, all the huge corporate farmers hopped on board, bought a shitton of birds, and just totally flooded the market, destroying all the small time operators in the process. Apparently, the birds were so worthless at the end, they just ended up putting down the ones they had for a loss. Shit happens when you jump on a fad. It could be bitcoin good, or it could be beanie baby bad.

...for some people, it’s happy meal toys..or old ps1 games...antique furniture or antique trinkets like cameras...at least these people didn’t go bankrupt because of button pins or antique play boys lol..and beanie babies have a massive re-sale value even today. I saw 20 beanies from my childhood that I would LOOOVVE to own again 🤩 who doesn’t love beanie babies?

About 18-20 years ago I bought about $2k of Apple stock. When it tripled in value I sold a some to “take profits”, when it doubled from there I sold some more. What I kept is now worth $130k. If I had not sold those two times I did it would be more like almost $2M. Taking profits is not always the best approach.

@@mrn234 what separates pokemon cards vs Beanies or similar in terms of investment is Pokémon is backed by Nintendo which alone opens so many doors of opportunities for content, there are games, tv shows, collectors, trading and an actual competitive game surrounding Pokémon. Pokémon has a greater reputation and fan base history than Beanies. A piece of cardboard ungraded in 10 years remaining in Near mint condition is an attractive standpoint to collectors. When a Pokémon set is in print the market has collectors but mostly people whom play the TCG competitively; once the set is out of print collectors and investors also flock to the market. Kids from current generation that remain in the hobby will want to potentially purchase cards and sealed product that they didn’t get to buy when they’re were younger without an independent source of income of their own..

HermannTheGreat Digital releases do not effect the value of the original cartridges at all, if not very minimal. Emulators and Roms have existed for over a decade, any retro game can be easily downloaded and played, it may not be completely legal, but the people who just want to play the game can in other ways, and the collectors are the people mostly keeping retro games their worth, and don't care much for re-releases. I own Super Mario Bros. in around 15 different formats. I had it on Wii, then later got the cart. For proof, look at Earthbound, the Wii U release has had no effect on the cart. Some 3DS physical games are selling more than the downloads, like Star Fox 64 or, at a time before a reprint, Zelda OOT. It may effect newer games that are harder to emulate more. This is because the market of 'just want to play' and 'collectors' cross over, as the only way to play is the disk or cart. This is for mostly 3D games and other hard to emulate systems. A re-release is removing people who want it so the value goes down. TL;DR - Re-Releases don't effect the cart's value much. Prices are still going up for most. It's like Vinyl, a CD is not going to effect the value.

empire true. I know people who made a lot of money because they worked in cinemas and got access to hundreds of rare pokemon cards that were given free with the ticket for the pokemon film. One of them, who managed to collect hundreds of them waited 2 years before going to the local Comic Book Guy to get an evaluation. The CBG informed him that had he come at the right time it was worth several thousands dollar. By then it dropped to maybe 50$...

That and when couple hundred thousand are sold, it's not rare anymore and the future demand for a huge number of "rare" items just isn't there either (Esp when kids (future buyers) are sick of them bc of the adults)

Ya I don't think it's mental illness, OCD is just that, I don't think it's technically clinical, if it is I definitely wasn't using it in that context. I know a few people who are "ocd" and I wouldn't call them clinical. You are right though, there are a number of complicated reasons I'm completely unqualified to diagnose ;). I also wouldn't hold anyone against anything they did because of it (unless it harmed someone else). People are complicated as hell and I can't even begin to pretend I understand how their minds work.

OCD is a mental disorder that involves fulfilling compulsions to prevent something horrible, often imagined or fantastical, from happening. This was NOT OCD.

It can work...but it's tricky as hell. You have GOT to be very clever..and VERY shrewd....and very attentive to the trends. Best to just collect what you love and expect to NEVER get your money back.
