Exactly and bansky is cursed to have his work valued more than his messages I think that was his goal when he shredded it but now idiots think it's worth more destroyed ..no artist is on his level anymore
i bet banksy was the one who bought the painting in the first place, initiated the prank, now successfully raised its value and got his name in the news again.
@I Am Sekou He said he bet Banksy was the one who bought the painting. I don't think he would buy it from himself. He would still have to pay the auction house if he did that. I think when he created the painting, he built in that shredder and waited for the right time. Unfortunately, it didn't get the result he wanted. It instead increased the value of the painting. He was trying to ruin the value because he is against Consumerism and Capitalism. Atleast, that's what he leads us to believe.
I loved the looks on people’s faces when it shredded. If you don’t understand why this is genius, all you need to know is that this challenges the classist pretentiousness of the British art world
How would Banksy be the buyer if he doesn't have a spare million dollars, which I would imagine would be a requirement to even be a guest at Sotheby's?
@@aporue5893 there really is no such thing as art. The value of a piece of art comes from the story behind it, and not the artwork itself. If you ever go to a starving artists sale, you will see some of the most beautiful art ever created, worth pennies on the dollar. Way more spectacular than the garbage selling for millions. In fact, the only reason why the Mona Lisa is worth trillions, is because of how it was stolen several times. Before that, it was seen as just another painting. The story of the mona lisa is actually a fascinating one, and I would totally recommend searching up some videos on its history.
@@aporue5893 it's the complete opposite of pretentiousness. You didn't get the point of what Banksy is expressing through shredding his painting. He has let it be known that he is against people selling his work, he doesn't want it locked away, he wants everyone to see it for free. Him shredding the painting is a slap in the face to the auctioneer and the person who bought it.
In a couple of years it’s probably (the now shredded picture and the frame) going to be sold for a even crazier price because now there’s actually a story behind it
Carl Mape actually the new valuation is between 5 and 8 millions . Yup , the value of the prank , the shredder made by Banksy himself , it’s madness , he got the opposite of what he’s was aiming for 👻👻👻👻
@@hammertoe00 he actually wanted to destroy it his art goes against consumerism and bansky already gets paid off of all this he just didn't want it being sold anymore I believe
Carl Mape for the frame, maybe? Basically the artist "remotely" and seemingly spontaneously included the orig. work in a re-appropriation of what amounted to a spectacular piece of performance art, with the momentarily purchased -and now shredded(enhanced?) main image left as ONLY artifact of the occasion. I'm guessing this has to be a record for fastest/largest increased value of an art object in history.
amaryllis Goi he’s a artist.... he copied in my opinion the movies SAW....... he doesn’t reveal his identity.. I think he sat back and thought how can I do something similar in the art world.
That frame must of must of weighted a ton. After all it housed a motor and a battery not to mention the shredding mechanism an alarm and some circuitry in order to receive the command signal. Nobody ever wondered why a drawing and frame was so heavy or so thick? Banksy supposedly made the thing a few years ago, batteries lose power after a while even if not used. What type of battery did he use, a nuclear power cell? I'm I the only one who thinks there is more to this than meets the eye? I don't believe Sotherby's are that stupid, surely someone checked this thing out.
Dude they just got the painting if you know anything about uk they take these without buying them ,but they just got this and he has ppl inside museums
@@SM-4359 I know quite a lot about the UK, as I live there. I don't think Sortherby's or any other reputable auction house take items in to sell without examining, assessing and evaluating them. It took two of them to take it of the wall for f*cks sake, and no one ask the question why is so heavy.
The best ever prank, boobie trapped and shredded the iconic girl with balloon painting. I wouldn't sell it either, in years to come, imagine the price. Priceless. 👍👍👍
I don't understand why musicians get paid so much. You don't see many replicas (meaning painted or actually done in the same medium) of art, but people do covers songs all the time, so music can't be that difficult.
But how was the shredding set off? Remote? Phone? Surely it wasn't set to begin shredding upon the sound of a gavel rapping. Was the real Banksy - or a proxy - in the room?
Two people on his behalf, both with remotes incase the first failed. It was an old school mobile, that's why there was a delay, the text tool longer to arrive, was meant to be immediate, two lads frantically sending texts, 5 in total, just to be sure it would shread.
The more you ruin art the more valuable????? Banksy is right. Rich people will spend big money because it's high priced. An arbitrary value assigned to the painting by galleries for art collectors but is it really worth what they guess?
Art and the art scene is stupid. If he really wanted it destroyed he would have used a cross shredder. Total gimmick disguised as a prank, he knew what he was doing
Sold for 1.4 million Buyer: alright Banksy: *turns on shredder* Painting shreds Buyer: oh shit Banksy: that’ll show em Realizes value goes up Buyer: hell Yis Banksy: WHAT THE F-
I find this really sad and disgusting. So many vultures out there, even in the comment section. He damaged the picture for a reason, but what happens? they get excited because “the price just went up” So many selling and fighting over his art for money, something he clearly despises. pathetic people.
Honestly I think the shredding of the art picked up the value. This prank made the piece more iconic and everyone will probably know about this. Edit: I wrote this literally right before they said this stunt added $5m to the price. 😂
And Banksy got his hands on this Banksy painting to put it in a shredder how? Oh hang on, the seller must be..............Zzzzzzzzz Everything Banksy in the past few years is so blag. Much better when simply painting walls than doing deals with Theme parks, Auctions and London Underground to perform blag stunts
So has Robin Gunningham. But he does graffiti art, not in a band. Where as Rob del Naja is just in a band. Was at one point part of the collective team, but Gunningham is the head of 'the team' as it were.
Is this true or a game...??? how it was shredded right when a hammer hit the cafedral far away from a picture???????? also do people not looking whats inside that fat frame????
Just shows even more people’s shameless consumerist behavior. It was great art, then Banksy shredded it, now it’s a piece of trash, but worth more. But you know, no money for homeless people or migrants fleeing violence. Best to ignore issues like that and make them out to be hopeless subhumans as we pick up the shredded paper off the ground that is somehow worth more than the lives of countless humans.
I hate that people only think of his artwork as something to look at and spend exuberant amounts of money on instead of understanding what banksy is trying to call attention to smh
Artists like banksy don’t make work to hang “in the living room”. Actually no artist does. The high $ paintings sold at auction like this have been historically kept in museums owned by private owners for many reasons.
Wtf... Sheep buying this crap. Don't they get it? He's making fun of them. Even when he tells them the art world is overpriced nonsense, they just keep buying.
They don't even get the point behind it! Banksy not bansy..! He will never be a sell out! All the money doesn't even go to him! So disgusting what people can do for money. Art is made for the beauty of it not the price tag. What pisses me off more about it is that they just laugh at it. Disgusting honestly
I think this Banksy character should just come out I don’t know what he is trying to prove by hiding, his art work isn’t that good anyway and it’s the media that makes it expensive there’s a lot of wall art out there and probably better that this wanker who wants to hide and play games with the world, I say Banksy show yourself or just go away you have nothing to prove as far as I’m concerned
2 million for a fucking picture. People are stupid! If I copy it and say it's real I'll have the same picture for under $5. These people only pay this much to brag that they paid that much.
I don't get this man thing, is it social stunt or what? But well, If you care that much how your artworks publicizing, then keep it home and keep it down then. People do love drama that's what I get it.
This guy lives life by having fun and fucking with everybody. Definitely won the life lottery. Have fun man, I'm not as creative or mentally capable to live the way I really want to.
Heyyy past This crap was awesome He’s an artist Let him do what he wants How bout y’all come 2 the present day and put that angst towards the fact that George Floyd’s life was taken by a cop and the cops that watched it happen! ✌🏼🤎😊
What a great country, Where a 1.4 million dollar piece of paper can increase 5 to 7 million in value, yet a child/adult/family literally minutes away will go hungry.
The fact that people think that material shit made by an artist, is worth thier millions when they could build a school for artistic underprivileged children and adults and create a mass of new styles and talent that could enrich the world with art we might not ever had dreamed of! Just for the sake of art!!!
And what people are not talking about is that Banksy was in the crowd at Sotheby's and pressed the button to activate the shredder but the only thing is that he got caught recording it after he pressed the button. Lol sooner or later everyone gets caught! Its been fun.
Why didn't he shred the entire painting?? Somebody knew it's value would rocket I think.. surely if he wanted to destroy it the whole lot would have been shredded
= People buy crap at very high prices. More proof at what point the Art World and particularly the Contemporary Art World is completely bankrupt aesthetically and otherwise
He did. And the sad and funny part is that Banksy isn't original or elusive. People just think he is. His identity is known and he's just recycling what Warhol did years ago. Yawn.
