I believe he was for a while in the late 90s, there's pieces he did alongside Inkie iirc. 3D and others in Bristol were also using stencils before banksy and I assume this was an influence on him
1:27 mate, your interpretation of what Banksey did to Robbos peice is way off! The man was painting over Robbo's peice not putting it up. It was a diss. As it was Robbo's last remaining peice still up.
Nah the original pretty clearly was a guy wheatpasting the graffiti on as if it was wallpaper onto a blank wall. Not him painting over it, unless you're talking in the literal sense obviously.
I actually love banksy work, but as a writer, and from L.A., that is some toy shit to go over someone who's been getting up way longer than he has, respect.
@@AndreasDelleske He makes the stencils, filling in stencils is takes way less skill then free handing a piece that's why most street graffiti writers cant draw a face compared to Banksy because they aren't just filling inside a stencil
I respect both Robbo & Banksy, but Robbo is a pure graffiti artist whereas Banksy is both a traditional graff artist and a street artist, if you get me. Banksy's murals often have an underlying message and they bridge a gap between the old skool tagging & graff (which Banksy, particularly in his early works, is also known for and he is incredible at by the way) & modern, "urban" art. So, I got much love for Robbo as a graffer, but thought he let himself down a bit here if I'm honest. Team Robbo resorted to just painting over works and petty threats, whereas Banksy, rightly or wrongly, was witty & clever in his manipulation of Robbo's piece. To me, it came across as a publicity stunt, even if it wasn't meant that way. I'd have MUCH preferred Robbo to stick to what he's good at and, rather than just deface Banksy's work, paint something incredible and eye-catching right next to it. The "Blek" insult is just naff in the extreme - Banksy has made no secret of the influence Blek has had on his work and the 2 have collaborated and supported each other, so I don't get what Team Robbo were trying to say. It smacked of jealousy, really. All that being said, Robbo was a pioneer for graffiti in the UK and I will remember him for that and his brilliant artwork, rather than for this silly 'feud' which, in my opinion, did him no favours
The medium is the message you dickhead. You are just a marketing pawn to an artist selling you a crappy t shirt slogan. There is no skill in biting French street artist and using a mask, literally. Robin had always been innit for the money and you fools haven been taken in. People who like art don’t like Banksy. He is for tourists and toys.
This is an incredible video. I know of Banksy but I never knew about Robbo. Rest In Paint, this wasn’t some silly beef. This was justified beef backed by graff history. Great stuff.
Does anybody look at this video and think "dang... this is basically a historic video by now" ? I mean, at the time of me watching this for the first time, it's 10/11 years old.
I'm probably gonna get tons of hate for this but in my opinion i respect both of these artists very much and what it is they do, they have so much passion for what it is they do and they take the time to give our streets an extra little bit of flare, oh and as for saying who is the better artist they have both different styles it'd be hard to compare them , i just cant find it in me to prefer one of these artists over the other and you know what i'm glad i cant decide
I'm a fan of Banksy, just as much as any other street artist. But as much of an "artist" as you want to consider yourself, you're still doing graffiti. Thus, you play by street rules. If you get crossed, you fight back. Much respect to Robbo actually upholding this. Banksy should be on the same level as every other graff writer and street artist.
R.I.P. King ROBBO!If there is someone who deserves tha crown is tha veteran that comes out and fight when insulted even if in tha deep retirement!Much respect for that Legend!Unlike others he died on war!
Good video, you missed a few key pieces of info, not your fault though. Also, the story about Banksy and Robbo meeting when Banksy had just started is completely true. Banksy disrespected him, and thus caught a lot of shit from everyone in the scene, and rightly so. But once again, cool vid, I enjoyed it, you made some good points.
Robbo: Definitely an artist, and a key figure in the '90s culture Banksy: Mainly a 'Blek le Rat' copypaster, but I like the messages to society he writes.
So why was this Robdork so mad? It's not his fucking wall in the first place. Someone who calls himself a king or a team and writes his name in big childish letters all over the place doesn't strike me as very intelligent. At least there's wit in banksy's work.
+szametha You obviously don't write, you cant touch anything someone else has done without permission. I'd barley call Banksy a "graffiti artist". He is more of a tourist attraction. Anyone who writes hates him, anyone who follows the art wants to jerk off on his back.
@@pl0mp378 Ask yourself why you take the time to react to a 7 year old post 😀. Anyway, point still stands: this is 6th grade level witless doodling. Talking about copying, it's not like nobody ever before painted a name on a wall during the sixties, seventies and eighties.
@DD9338 I agree with that to some extend but it is also about history. Think about the robbo piece as if it was the house of your childhood. Now this house wasn't necessarily a beautiful home but think about the memories that go with the house. Your first room, all the christmases and birthdays and all inbetween. If this house now got torn down and replaced with something really "beautiful" would you rather keep the house or would you chose something beautiful but with no soul?
Banksy himself says he is overrated and "Whenever I think I've done something the slightest bit original I realiese blek the rat did it 20 years earlier." Both Robbo and Banksy are very talented, but do you think Robbo would have wrote about him supposidly hitting bansky if Banksy wasnt as big as he is? No of course not. Wish Robbo a speedy recovery, but which one of them will be remebered in 20 years time?
Banksy's "global warming" piece was genius and universally understandable. It's embarrassing to know that "Team Robbo" was made up of proper....adults. Haha. Congratulations on that amazing commentary guys.
@Doctor Cough-for-Me you right but fuck That Prissy pussy Grammer art, Art is what You create in your own way how you see it How you want to Put it out there Fuck all that Bullshit!!!
qwerty123627 .... you never prepared such stencils did you? it's one hell of work. made a graffiti in a school's wall once with his stone thrower. took ages
Banksy is an actual artist. I love graffiti but I can bet you money they aren't going to be talking about Robbo in Art history 50 years from now. If Robbo wants to compete with an artist like Banksy he is going to have to step his game up considerably.
By the time that Banksy went over Robbo's piece, it was already unrecognisable due to the amount of shitty tags that had already been scrawled over it. If Banksy's piece was a comment on Robbo's at all, it's just as likely that he was satirising the taggers who had completely obscured Robbo's work.
first off, street art can be a lot of things. painting on a wall is called graffiti. second, banksy started his "street-art" career by doing traditional stylized letter graffiti.
It makes me sad to see so many kids these days, calling themselves "graffiti artists" when all they do is scribble their names or the name of some girl. Graffiti can be art, even when it is just a name. A stylish tag, well drawn is not just some bit of scribble that should be painted over, let alone a picture. If anything, that artistic ability should be encouraged and supported. Think of all the plain, ugly walls that could be brought alive with colour, just by naming a theme and letting Artists transform it (I intentionally missed the word graffiti there. An artist is an artist and why not let other local people, who enjoy making art, join in?) . If people stopped treating them like criminals and just asked that they keep in mind, their work will be seen by everybody (so something offensive or obscene would have to be painted over) I think every artist would hit those walls with a passion, trying to make their work the stand out piece of the mural. At the end, there would be a work of art, irreplaceable, priceless and those people formally called criminals would have worked together to make their town a better place. Isn't that what we all need? To learn how to work together and make a better place for us all?
Well I've never heard of "Taki 187" but Taki 183 and Julio 204 were at the very forefront of the art style, when it was at it's most simplistic. Even so, both tags have precise form and a set balance between the letter and number placement that sets them apart from a plain "scribble". They were prethought and designed to look a certain way, not just scrawled randomly. As with any art form, time has developed graffiti beyond it's simple beginnings to an art form that can be breathtaking, shocking, beautiful, bizzarre, just as any other form of art can be. Futura being a perfect example of this (he no longer uses the 2000) as he is a true artist, of worldwide renown, and has expanded his "canvas" to vehicles, fashion, illustration, advertising and, yes, even to real canvas. Even a basic name Tag in one colour is complex and beautifully rendered. A piece of his art would definitely bring vibrancy and interest to an otherwise dull and dreary area. Personally, there are some of his pieces I would LOVE to get my hands on. I could never afford to but that's the point. You never know what talent lies hidden in your own neighbourhood but if graffiti artists worked together to make works of art in otherwise bleak places, the whole community could share that piece of work. It would be there for everyone to enjoy.
@@lyndaleoliver-musto23 Graffiti just went over your head son. Maybe you want to make beautiful things but it's totally not about that. What you call scribble is probably better than what you would ever do.
@MinkBomb...im saying that Banksy is an artist, and yes he did use Bleks influence in some of his work, and Banksy acknowledged that, he quoted-'just when i think ive done something original, Blek has done it 20 years ago'...and he did'nt 'copy' his style, he went to stencils because it was more quicker, Banksy is a clever artist whether people like it or not, he has put graffiti on the world map and has millions of followers, that is enough to call him a genius my friend..
You seem to know a lot. Robbo is this down to earth guy, who was on the cusp of recognition, and then the other guys took that away from him. Get better soon.
@TheRicharBurke id start with two books which are "subway art 25th anniversary edition" and "how to draw graffiti style by kevin astek fitzpatrick" they both have so much info on the current state and history of the street artforms we see today, and id highly recommend watching STYLE WARS on youtube :) its a must see for all graffiti and street artists or anyone intrested in this subjects, i hope this helps, peace :) - MENT2
there is another piece you missed that Banksy did that is in Camden. It is on the brick wall under the canals next to Pirate's Castle. I just saw it today actually. It is a face with sunglasses.
To be fair, every writer has endured go-overs at some point and I think that the 'war' is simply just a graf artist knocking Banksy off the pedestal a bit. Both artists are innovators and have large fanbases, so no-one can really argue that one is better than the other - both should probably just suck it up to be frank.
Id agree but i bet banksy can still paint letters given the chance... tbh hes good at what he does its his credibility and followers that frown upon graffiti unless its by banksy that pisses me off .. im a writer myself i love graff but i let mental health take over so havnt been active in years just the odd sketch here and there call him a sell out but given half the chance any artist would sellout for the money banksy makes
"Did you paint over Robbo’s piece and have him beaten up? His piece in Camden had been dogged for more than five years by the time I painted that spot. It’s a real shame about his accident and I hope he fully recovers. I would never deliberately cuss Robbo - he’s a graffiti legend. And he’s bigger than me."
@ConceptofNiet : Hey, no nees to dis him, the guy took the time to make a nice wee docu'....he obviously did his homework and knows his stuff and isn't taking any sides.... plus, "anyone can do it" is an important part of why this is art.
Banksy and Robbo are two completely different artists. Robbo is a graffiti artist. Banksy is a street artist, painter and sketcher with amazing artworks. Banksy is no copycat or wuss. Sadly Robbo is in a Coma, hope he get's better.
There is a longer program called graffiti wars if you can find it it goes more into depth about what happened between these two with robbo starring in it just before he died well worth a watch puts things straight!
i think that banksy was trying to rep robbo with the original modification to the robbo tag, but i also think he made a poor decision doing so, it woulda been better to just leave it as it was. also, i think team robbo should have analyzed banksy's work more before getting offended
I like Banksy though, he conveys messages to people. That Disneyland stunt was clever and when he painted on the wall between israel and palestine, just genious! Robbo's work is pretty good too though
Recently there was a local street artist that was spray painting poppies that say "we remember" below them.. The police painted over every single one.... I found it very disrespectful.
THESE GRAFFITI ARTISTS SHOULD GET MORE CEVER WITH THEIR ART. IF THEY WANNA CAUSE A REAL STIR, DO BETTER, CLEVER-ER SHIT THAN BANKSY. Then it'll get real interesting.
robbo was good in his day but he needs to step aside for banksy, arguably one of the worlds most recognized street artist. stay in the old folks home robbo
For those who are interested here is a full length doc entitled Graffiti Wars which follows King Robbo around and explains about his rivalry with Banksy (take the spaces out the link) vimeo .com/37893507.
That's kind of like saying velvet underground is more important than the Stooges because they played easy to play music that sounded okay before the Stooges refined it with a dash of aggression from the Rolling Stones. Robbo may have "introduced" graffiti to London, but if there wouldn't have been people like Banksy who refined street art, Robbo would have been just another guy spray-painting his name on the wall.
@RIDESTREET408 ..Im from Bristol where Banksy originally started out, around 96 onwards his freehand work started appearing in and around the city, now for people to say he was shit at freehand is an insult, yes some of his early work was abit iffy, i'e the 'Class' piece, but after that he progressively got alot better. And for people to say he is not respected by other graff artist's is noncence, Im on RG's facebook page and 30% of his 5000 friends are graffiti artists from around the world...
I feel like people read to far into all this street art stuff...I am a huge fan of street art & feel The thing that separates street art from all other art is that each piece is only temporary & because of that it becomes very special for someone who sees it. Its bound to be covered up, so i don't really understand why people get super butt hurt when other artists change their piece. if it were meant to stay the same forever, it would be done on paper of or a canvas like all other art.
