Also intolerant. Star Trek had big issue for having diverse cast & having inter racial kiss. In fact the unaired pilot starring Captain Pike is not even the 1st draft. OG draft the Captain Was a Woman. Which executives told Rodenberry it's too much & may anger a lot of viewers.

For what it's worth, the Game of Thrones skit isn't the slightest bit scary - to kids, it's just Grover playing a goofy game of musical chairs in a medieval castle. It's one of those things that Sesame Street has always done, where they spoof stuff that the adults will get in a way that kids can still be entertained by. That's why Sesame Street endures, because the whole family can watch it together 🙂

I legit can't remember whether I was ever afraid of the Wicked Witch as a little kid. My earliest memories of her are of how cool I thought she was. I loved going around telling people "I'll GET you, my pretty. And your little dog, too!" and doing her dope laugh. Same with Maleficent, Ursula, and the Evil Queen (her pretty form was cool, though the old lady version *was* scary af) from the Disney movies. I feel like I've always admired powerful ladies who love to be bad. Just chewing up scenery left and right, and sometimes much more interesting than the lead characters. Scar, Hades, Shan Yu, and Jafar are also favorites of mine but on the dude side. There's an element to where all of these villains were designed with breaking gender and sexuality stereotypes in mind as a negative, whereas I (and probably a lot of their fans) always found that was what made them interesting and even cool.
@derinaries

I actually remember this! And hell yeah she was scary! I can even remember why: because the Wicked Witch of the West (I was already aware of Wizard of Oz at the time) is WAY too hardcore of a villain for Sesame Street! In my mind Dave was absolutely no match for her. Not even Mr Hooper stood much of a chance. Who else, then? Big Bird with a hockey stick? Gimme a break. The Count? Yeah I wouldn't exactly trust The Count in this situation. The Ninja Turtles? Spider-Man? Maybe, but I knew there were no signs of them coming. So yeah this villain was too op for the setting.

The only reason why David demanded respect is because of the way that he treated him from the very beginning as if he had deliberately stolen the property when what really happened is that the broom came down on him and if she had not come down there to get it, he never would've known who it belonged to. Maybe if the witch had shown him some decency sooner instead of jumping all over him the moment she was there with him, she would've gotten what was hers a whole lot sooner. If he had done what she said from the very beginning, it only would've been a license for her to continue being evil which only would've been an even worse message for children. I like when kids' educational shows bring on scary characters and have them reveal themselves to be actors to the children on the show. Back in the 80s when Reagan-era family values/PSA programming was intensive, slasher movies and their marketing were scaring the hell out of kids, so they had Robert Englund show up in one of the PBS shows and show the kids that he was just an actor and showed them how movie companies did makeup for TV and film. That's an effective way to soothe kids but not hide them from what frightens them.

We actually see him again in that shirt during this episode here and what makes it even better is the fact that it isn't all the way buttoned up there. (smiles) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jE_sMC5WHI0.html I love seeing Northern Calloway (David) in that hat too. As a child of that era of Sesame Street, anything related to the Wicked Witch of the West, The Omen, or the Exorcist was absolutely terrifying. Put any of that ominous Exorcist or Omen type music in any movie scene and I'd be in a panic; even if it was a scene about cute bunny rabbits or puppies. The Wicked Witch on Sesame Street and playing that music is/was a no-go for me.

"Scary" is relative to the time you're living in. People, including kids, thought Bela Lugosi's Dracula was scary when it first came out. Watch it now and try to have kids stay awake or at least not call it boring.

The part about the witch menacing David seems a bit brutal given the context we know about him now. In case if you’re not on your Sesame Street lore, the actor that played the character who ran the store and caught the broom suffered from progressively worsening mental health issues and eventually snapped unfortunately commiting a bunch of bizarre petty crimes. He ended up passing away shortly thereafter in a facility.

This episode came out the same year as the Paul Lynde Halloween Special (1976) where Margaret Hamilton reprises her role as the Wicked Witch. I can imagine the producers of Sesame Street found out she was involved and asked her if she'd make an appearance on their show too.

The more that I watch their interaction, the more that I am on David's side. I don't blame him for standing up for himself when her broom came down on him right up out of nowhere. Also, with it being 1976, letting her get away with treating him like dirt I guess would have only been a step backwards where treatment of African Americans is concerned. God bless you always!!!
