The bench not only provided starters a break in games, but they also challenged them every day in practice to get better.

When your BENCH includes Bill Walton...game over
@MightyAvengingLeo
@MightyAvengingLeo 3 года назад
Absolutely. And Wedman had been a 2-time All-Star before he went to Boston. He was averaging 18 points a game the year Cleveland traded him to the Celtics.

@@MightyAvengingLeo With all that, we have to mention the biggest jackass move…Sichting for Paxson. Paxson divided the locker room something fierce.

@@thepunditspundit1776 Paxon became what is called a "locker-room lawyer," and his backstabbing involved co-opting Kevin McHale to cause a rebellion. This happened during Larry Bird's return in 1989/90 season, which saw coach Jimmy Rogers and Bird feuding the whole season with the legend's shot selection; Paxon griped about playing time, field-goal attempts and just about everything else. By the time the Celtics were bounced in the first round, the team was a mess and in need of an overhaul; During the summer Rogers would be fired, Chris Ford would become head coach, point guard Brian Shaw would return from his Italian exile a better player and Reggie Lewis attained all-star status. By the time training camp began, Paxon's contract was bought out and he was history, and since then, Bird will never have anything to do with him.

Decades before Golden State's "Death Lineup," there was this. Boston's starters would bury you, and their bench would make sure you stayed in the ground.

Best comment on this thread. Walton, Wedman and Sichting would have been starters on some of the dregs of the league. Golden State had a nice run but the 86 Celtics could have beaten any one of those Warriors teams, Durant included.

Does anyone remember the 3rd quarter run? Every game they would bury the opponents in the 3rd. It was so fun to watch. You just knew it was going to happen.

His players certainly did. Bill Fitch was a good coach, but his style & at times, critical manner, wore on some players. KC seemed to make guys feel valued & appreciated.

Just a random comment from me...I have never seen anyone come close to Larry Bird defending a 3 on 1 break. Unreal...

Best bench ever: Bill Walton, Jerry Sichting, Scott Wedman, Rick Carlisle, Sam Vincent, Greg Kite, Dave Thirdkill

Because this team was so good, KC is very underrated. Imagine convincing seven guys who were splitting 70-80 minutes a night that (as Sam Vincent notes) their contribution to the championship was challenging the starters.

Then there was David "The Sheriff of Bradley U" Thirdkill #45. A 6'6" Small Forward who could block shots or cut through the lane and score. Did he really have a gambling problem?

Well it wasn't gambling P M me. He's 6'7". He could play power guard/point forward

It's an eerie feeling but whenever I see Kevin McHale it feels like he's my uncle that lives in the city that I only get to see on at special times like Christmas. I don't have any uncles that resemble him or talk like him or are similar in any way, so I don't know why this is. It's crazy. Maybe I should request a dna test.

96 Bulls didn't have a center to match the 86 Celtics frontcourt. McHale would have hung 40 on them let alone Bird

96 Bulls had such team speed and athleticism on Defense and could manufacture offense like it was the most natural thing in the world, but as i recollect, they never had to play ANYTHING like this '86 Celts team...
@gregoryphillips3969
@gregoryphillips3969 3 года назад
Totally agree with you. I love Michael Jordan no doubt, but for one year the 86 Celtics might be the best team ever put together in any sport. When Walton and Bird were on the court at the same time it was almost unfair. It reminded me of little league when one team was just too good. Walton and Bird together embarrassed the competition.
@monolithgeometry3221

@@gregoryphillips3969 if they were the smoothest passing team with the best frontcourt ever, the only way someone could beat them is to break their will. 96 bulls stepping in passing lanes and playing superior team defense might accomplish this. Perhaps even in 6

My favorite bench moment, probably Scott Wedman shooting 11 for 11 and making 26 points game one of the '85 finals. He was almost 33 years old at the time.
