2016 Steph, 2000 Shaq, 1991 MJ, and 2013 Lebron are the ones that come to mind for me.

My case: 1988 Michael Jordan. MVP, scoring title (averaging 35 points btw) [FG: 53%, FT: 84%], Steals leader (3.2), DPOY, All defensive first team, AllNBA first, All-Star Game MVP, led the Bulls to 50 wins (not a single all star teammate). Nearly a perfect season, his only flaw was that three point shot, but this wasn’t the three point era, and that never held him back from being the most dominant player in the league

Bill Walton is a special human being. His love for his fellow man and he don’t judge people by money. He judges people by character. And so full of love for his teammates and respect for everybody he played against. I miss this team so much. It’s all I do is watch 80’s Celtics games on RU-vid. Only one I can’t find that I wanna see so bad is game one bucks at Celtics ecf.

Yep, sounds about right. For all of his worldly experiences, Larry seems to be a simple man at heart. He sacrificed a lot of time honing his game so I’m sure he enjoys spending his free time doing what he loves. We should all do that more often.

He was my hero then and I realized his legendary greatness at the time. I tried to pattern my game to be like his. Never able to shoot like him but his fearless and tenacity and total team player were things I always tried to base my game on. He is still my hero today.

Everyone talks about the infamous Joe Barry Carroll for McHale and Parish trade as one of the most lopsided in league history (and it most definitely was). But no one ever brings up the fleecing that Boston inflicted on Phoenix in ‘83. Red Auerbach received a former Finals MVP, one of the greatest defensive point guards of all time and a future Hall of Famer, Dennis Johnson, in exchange for Rick Robey. Now, that’s criminal.

Like you I'm guessing, I bled Sonic green back in the Sonic Boom years. Loved me some Gus, JJ, Lonnie, Jack, Downtown, all of them. But DJ I think was the straw that stirred the drink, not just because he was Finals MVP in '79. He brought a championship dimension to the Sonics that was a little hard to define because it involved stuff like intangibles and went way beyond just the stat sheet. Defense, offensive rebounds, hustle plays, huge clutch shots and just overall team play from DJ is what gave the Sonics an edge against any team they played. When they traded him, they lost that edge that he brought, which is why they never got within sniffing distance of a title again. All DJ ever did was win, no matter where he went. And when he left, he always left losing in his wake. I think every season of his career except for maybe one year when he was with the Suns, his team made it at least as far as the conference finals, not counting his years with the post-championship Celtics when he was past his prime in the late '80s. There will never be another player quite like him.

I got to see Bird and company play in the old Garden when I lived in Boston for a year, 1990. It was a terrible place to see a basketball game. You couldn't breathe, you couldn't see much, the fans were pretty much all drunk jerks, and there is no redemption clause in this sentence. It sucked. I've been in plenty of other sports venues, with plenty of nutty fans. The Garden was so much worse. I wanted my ticket money back. The mystique isn't about some leprechaun-special space. It was an armpit, but a lot of good teams played there, so you get the impression it was some kind of glowingly special win-maker. Man, I don't know: maybe you thought your high school locker room smelled good, too.

@@hirshja If you ask me, the Celtics would have won four more NBA titles. Meanwhile, the Lakers would bolster their roster, trading for Barkley, and possibly Ewing. Johnson also cuts out his swinger ways, doesn't get AIDS, plays until 1996. They battle the Lakers for titles. Bulls eventually land a discontented Olajuwon in a trade in 1993 - only then does Jodran win titles. What happens after 1998 is anyone's guess.

Long story short, MJ would have lots of competition and won't dominate the 90s like he did in real life. He never wins a ring without Olajuwon.

Had Bias lived, the Celtics would have won again in '87 with him playing for an injured McHale. Also, Bird says he would have retired in 1989 if Bias had lived.

Wes Mathew and and Billy Thompson bought additional athleticism off the bench .

Barcelona did not play beautifully under Guardiola. The incessant passing, sometimes going for minutes and minutes, on and on, just in order to tire an opponent out, is just plain boring to watch. The closest thing to it in basketball are the San Antonio Spurs of Gregg Popovich; however, I have a lot more respect for the Spurs than I do for the little Catalans.

I posit that the 2001 Lakers would have taken both of those teams to game 7 at least. The 2001 Lakers are the very greatest team I'll ever watch. I wasn't around in the era of the Celtics , and I didn't even know about the NBA during the Bulls runs. But from all the tape and analytics I have studies, I can say that the playoff version of 2001 Lakers. The version that walked all over 4 X 50+ win teams, and had the hardest road to any championship by quality of total opponents, and STILL WENT 15-1 with that 1 loss being a close overtime affair vs Iverson. That version of the Lakers would beat anyone, or at least take them to a close nail biter game 7. I don't think the combo of Rodman, Scottie and Jordan alone could quite hold off MVP Shaq + 28 PPG Kobe with their support cast of defensive specialists and long range bombers like Fisher. The 2001 Lakers literally have an answer to everyone.
