Banning All Sticker Cards - Explaining the May 13, 2024 Banlist 

There is a tournament rule that I think most players are not aware of. If an effect asks you to put a sticker on a permanent you own, and you didn't register a sticker sheet, you may, at that moment, go to a webpage that randomly generates three sticker sheets, and proxy those as a replacement. This should cover the "You didn't register sticker sheets because you weren't playing them yourself" problem. *However*, choosing three randomly generated sticker sheets out of all of them is less optimal than choosing three out of the best ten. In particular, it makes it much less likely for you to hit the sticker with 6 vowels. This means that if you still want to minmax, you're still obligated to register the sticker sheets.

Black border un-cards should have been cards that are silly in nature but utilize the game's mechanics in relatively normal way. Stuff like The Cheese Stands Alone (which got a nearly identical non-un card version)

I am listening to the mechanics for Unfinity in the beginning and my brain is melting. It is like they tried to make another card game within the card game 😭

if the stickers and attractions were acorded/silver bordered im willing to bet we would have enjoyed unfinity alot more (basically just mostly the dice rolling stuff was non acorned) the truth is why did they have bother with acorn holo stamps in the first place? because they could have just done silver and black bordred cards and the example for that is Steam flogger boss from future sight just to finally satisfy it's ability

Unfinity making things black-bordered in favor of an acorn stamp really delivers its legality information poorly since they're as visible as Yu-Gi-Oh!'s text. I get Wizards want them to be seen as "real" Magic cards. But that doesn't mean some of them should be eternal-legal. Plus, the fact that some cards are tournament-legal REALLY changes the way you open Unfinity booster packs. You open it in hopes of finding value and power than just for fun. Speaking of which, Attraction cards, because of their extra deck mechanic, also changes the way one plays MtG too. Just by having an always available deck of cards one can have access to, any player would want to use them in hopes of generating some kind of value passively. And this also changes the meta to forcing players to do more artifact-based removal eating up their deckbuilding that would otherwise be reserved for more dangerous artifacts. Konami did the Attraction idea better in Yu-Gi-Oh! with the Amazement archetype.

This was an unforced error by Wizards. Don't be the guy whose joke falls flat so you just repeat the joke louder. If your customers are "prejudiced" against your silver border cards, take the hint and let them play the game they enjoy.

Maro: We had a problem: there was no way for us to print cards that were legal in Commander, but not also legal in Legacy/Vintage. A few months later: Well, what do you know, we figured out a way to do it. SMH

All That Glitters seems like a pretty big deal for the pauper meta. It was very probably the strongest pauper deck period with cheap evasion, enough card advantage, and a sprinkle of powerful burn. I wouldn't be surprised if affinity stays relevant despite losing their current namesake.

Legalizing a joke sets in eternal formats while simultaneously printing joke sets then banning the joke set later is the most WOTC move WOTC has ever made. Maybe if they didn’t post the rules change but instead sold the rules change in a Secret Lair… 🤔

If they printed a non-sticker version that's just a 2/2 Goblin for 2R with ETB add RRRRR, would it be broken?

Unfinitys flavor could have been about fun throwbacks to retro space operas and sci-fi. Maybe have Bolas as an evil emporer card or something. Previously, you'd get neat stuff that played with magics lore and world like Urza Headmaster and B.F.M. But instead they went with a space arcade, with zombies wearing wigs and an employee creature type. And balloon tokens. I was so excited to experience one of them for myself, but they ruined it for no reason.

Stickers were always a stupid mechanic because they could've just made token auras. Would be much less of a hassle.

Making Unfinity black-bordered was a crime against fun. And not because of the impact it had on Legacy/Vintage/whatever, but the fact that a bunch of cards in previous un-sets cared about which color border your cards even were, which even the Acorn Unfinity cards still counted as black-bordered for.

what is the difference between mtg go and mtg arena ?

Correction: 36 cards that cared about stickers & 20 cards that cared about attractions were officially banned. But bc of their banning, effectively 16 sticker cards & 22 attractions were also banned. That's 94 total. TBH I'm infuriated by this banning bc the notes for the banning explicitly stated they only made these eternal legal to skirt the Commander ban on silver border cards & the Rule 0 conversation in EDH.

Who could have predicted that making un set mechanics legal in eternal formats world cause problems.... No one i tell you! No one saw that coming and complained that it was a problem

It really sucks that the solution WOTC thought to avoid having this cards on eternal formats wasn't to made them illegal but to design cards intentionally powered down so people won't play with them. First it means that if you want to play those cards you're in a disadvantage, second it means that there is no exploration of the mechanic in an interesting way, and finally it doesn't even work since if people really want to play with a card they will find a way to break it and they would have done all that for nothing.

I found some Unfinity packs at Rite Aid. Biggest mistake of my life.

Which effect is more reasonable? Madic: The Gathering: “Add red mana for each unique vowel on that sticker (The vowels are A, E, I, O, U, and Y.)” Yu-Gi-Oh!: “If this Fusion Summoned card in its owner's control leaves the field because of an opponent's card: You can destroy all monsters your opponent controls during the End Phase of this turn.”

Did they also ban the learn mechanic from strixhaven? Their was literally no reason to ban attractions. Attractions are the most inspired and fun mechanic in the recent game. Sure, the theming clashes with everything... Except goofy ass laser cowboy cactus people, fallout in it's entirety, or all the universe beyond cards. Magic ain't been "dignified" fantasy for a long time, why not just let people have fun with it. People who are still whining about the theming of other people's deck are litteraly the worst. And the lengths at which people still bend and stretch the actual impact of attractions is just dumb, for lack of a better word youtube won't let me use.

Another problem with _____ Goblin was, as you said, sophmoric fans calling it Mind Goblin. Mind Goblin had been a meme in MTG for decades and is heavily associating with the stereotypical immature, straight teenage boy demographic MTG has that has heavily stigmatized the card game as being unwelcoming, particularly to women. Creating _____ Goblin, intentional reference or not, fed into that stigma, at a time when wotc was facing a lot of backlash over its half-assed attempts at being more welcoming to a diverse playerbase.

When I learned that sticker goblin was a thing a few months ago... seriously, I felt disgust. My first legacy deck was goblins. A card with this stickers mechanic honestly is so disrespectful, despite of the junk-gadget goblin sub-theme, it's too much... feels like some my little pony sh|t. But then again I don't think WotC current employees respect the game at all, it's just the means to print money for hasbro now. Release tons of product, power creep like crazy and watch the game degenerate into some yugioh-esque no mana required to cast my spells nonsense. What? Unsets don't sell because they're not legal for tournament play? Well make it legal then, we've got boosters to sell! At least back when I was playing, around the time TNN was released, there were fewer cards impacting legacy coming from non-standard sets. Nowadays modern pretty much rotates with each modern horizons. I'm glad I sold my collection. I can't stand cards with random IPs being played in a game of magic, I can't stand the ridiculous power creep, the stupid legal unsets, the bad quality foil cards... suffice to say my format of choice is now standard. Even commander received the sh|ttification touch, with tons of mechanics and legendaries created to be commanders... no, just print regular cards and let the community pick the ones that work, ffs, stop ruining everything that's good.
