A good mate Nick Powis joins Damien and I on the 90 mile in between rock fishing sessions on a slow day. Small tides and terrible conditions made for unappealing fishing, but we were out there having a laugh.
Its not always about catching monsters, well, most of the time it is.... but sometimes its about the company and being able to enjoy what we all love to do in absolute shit weather. Damien did really well fishing Matapea in the rough weather, he pulled out quite a few pannies in what was 3.5 meters of swell and huge sweepers. Where as Nick struggled from the hung over and gumboots approach.
The following morning we sneak in a quick fish before jumping on the rocks. Its flattened right out, and its a fish a cast. However Damien learns a hard lesson that casting to the horizon doesnt produce the results, its about reading the surf and dropping baits in the gutters where fish come in to feed.
