Yes that's right. If the radios are using the frequencies recommended and then programmed with the CHIRP software available for free online (the disc it comes with is not so good), you will be getting out between 1 and 2 watts. The 5 watts isn't happening and is also not legal without license. If anyone needs the link for the frequencies I would be glad to send it. youtube will not allow me to post the link here.

can they do repeaters? Just grabbed them on impulse to give one to my friend and have one to keep with myself to tinker with. Gorsh I'v got too many GSMR radios already. The hobby is just so adicting. I seen the 18bucks price tag with free shipping for the pair and I jumped on it. This is what I have collected so far: rb19p pair, rb27s pair, hella baofeng, and a xact comm wristwatch I bought nos and a ritron base station and a old motorola talkaround FRS floatin around somewhere. I also have a stack of old CBs I was given and will maybe have a stranger things type radio radioshack HT given to me soon as a gift. This hobby is like the grownup version of playing with trains lol.

they have made it 2 watts according to the FCC rules in all 50 states, wikipedia has the info. Google gmrs/frs and click the wiki link , it's accurate. Legal unless people start messing with the input and output freqs for the repeaters. Once you start doing that it's not legal without license.

sadooq9696 the radios come programed with test frequencies in the 400 to 470 mhz range. in the United States many of these test frequencies are used by business and emergency responders and require a special licence. they can be programmed with regular frs frequencies which would keep you from transmitting illegally. keep in mind that the radios would still not be technically legal even if programmed to frs channels due to the fact that the radio itself can be programmed and compliant frs radios from the store can not be programmed. i would check with your governments communication agency to make sure you can use them.

ali habibu its to make sure your are compliant with the broadcasting laws in your area. these radios broadcast on an fm frequency so in many areas you may interfere with radio stations

Ham radio use on 70cm is legal but the frequencies they arrive with are overwhelmingly outside that band. I believe some of them are GMRS out of the box but technically that requires a license too. The issue becomes more complicated in that it seems to be in a grey area with regard to being legal for GMRS use. FRS use is never technically legal on this radio system. Low power FM like this is fairly unlikely to attract attention in rural or unpopulated areas but but use in more urban areas is likely to get all sorts of negative attention from the FCC and if you encroach upon the ham frequencies without a license you will almost certainly be found if you are discovered by other hams. There is this perception that if a radio is capable of being purchased it can be used on any and all frequencies it is capable of operating on. This of course is completely false. You can purchase a new corvette but just because it can get up to 140 mph does not mean its prudent or legal to do so. Using some common sense with these is highly recommended.
