This radio is one of the best, when you upgrade it with roger clark firmware it has SO MANY features... It has brightness control, it has graphical scanner, it has power control from 0.50mW, 0.250mw, 0.500mW, 1W, 2W, 5W, it has lock keys, lock ptt, rx only on channels, and on and on, many many features.. AMAZING RADIO!!!

Hello Jason, This was my first DMR radio. bought it about 1.5 years ago. The Monitor mode is configured in the software. Go to General Settings, Buttons. My config is under "Long Press" I have "Monitor" as choice. Pressing the SK1 Button on the radio for a long period will turn on the Monitor mode. Its not as good as the AT-D878. You need the right Color Code and Time Slot. It will find the Talk Group if the CC and TS are correct. I have the original software on mine. I need to create a RX Group or no receive just transmit. Its just another step for me. The radio for the money and at the time was pretty good and it help me learn a lot about programming. What I don't like about the DM-1801 is the RX audio is no where as loud as the AT-D878 (my new radio) and the Contact list is basically a manual entry unlike easily adding thousands of Contacts with a simple upload like on the AT-878. You config Private for Hams and Group for Talk Groups. Most people will be disappointed at only seeing the DMR ID show up on the screen and not the call sign and name like other radios. I spent a lot of time entering Ham Contacts so they would show up. I paid $54 so its hard to complain. I am tempted to try the software Roger Clark wrote, OpenSouce for the DM-1801. From what I have seen it brings it closer to other DMR radios in features. Ken

DMR or FM, Menu, Set, Radio Config, #9 (CH Type) will let you choose FM or DMR

The software is set up to allow the basic commands needed to accessed with some of the more advanced functions locked out. These functions can be easily unlocked by simply selecting Control / Alt / Shift / F11 and entering "DMR1801".

Jason, I’m beginning to help a blind person set up a DMR radio. The radio he and I both have is the Alinco DJ-MD5XT, which is an Anytone as far as I can tell. I’ve built codeplugs from scratch and feel quite comfortable using the software, but I am sighted. But, it’s not very usable by a blind person because it has no audio prompts. Baofeng and some others have their distinctive audio prompts. I was thinking that maybe this, or the 1701, or the RD-5R might have audio prompts that would be helpful. I thought I heard some of them when I listened to your review of the 1701. I would be surprised if the RD-5R doesn’t have them also. But I didn’t hear them in this review. I know they’re annoying to those of us who have our sight, but for some people they could really be helpful. Basically I’m looking for a radio that will announce the channel change, or better yet the name of a talk group, to suggest to him. You see a lot of radios and you show more DMR radios than other channels. Could you please comment on the audio prompts for this radio? Thank you and 73 de AI7KS.

@@n1kkri I have been. Running open gd77 on my 1801 for a little over 3 months . I updated it every time they release a new update with bug fixes. It really makes the 1801 a more useable radio then having the factory firmware. Good thing is of you don't like it you can 100% flash back to stock

The OpenGD77 CPS and firmware makes this radio decent. As you said, there are better radios available. When I got mine 6 months ago, their CPS was terrible, and kept changing the radio language back to Chinese. I got irritated with it and threw it in a drawer, instead of returning it to Amazon. Fast forward, I got it back out when I found out about the OpenGD firmware and CPS. Also, it uses the same battery and charger as the GD-77. I had to replace the charger, the OEM one crapped out. If you don't know it's a clone of the GD77, you will search the ends of the earth for a replacement charger and battery for the DM-1801.

+1 for Roger's Opengd77 (opengd77.com). So good I would suggest you'll probably want to do a second review. Would suggest the same for treatment for the GD77, especially because you can use the GD77 as a hotspot when connected to a raspberry with Pi-Star installed. i have the GD-77 which is the same radio. and the stock firmware lasted about 2 days for me..i couldn't take it and loaded open gd77 which is WAYYYY better. (still has quirks, but better) i just ordered the anytone 878 last night. programming this thing is pain i had to make my own codeplug from scratch and trial and error. will probably keep as a backup.

I like the 1801 and I would probably buy a few of them if the accessory support was better, at this time there are no battery eliminators, extended batteries, gang chargers, AA battery cases, etc...It seems like a good radio, but it's really hurt by lack of accessories.

Ham Radio 2.0 For the TYT DMR HTs there is at least some out there, RandL has a few. That said, accessories is why I chose a Radioddity RD-5R. With the full catalog of UV5R accessories available, I never want for something to add or change on the radio

Write speed is slow because no matter what you're writing to the radio, it writes the whole thing everytime

I'm not sure if the OS1 has been updated to include the newer servers. I would plug it up and run the update on it, maybe see if there is firmware on the SharkRF website for that unit still.

When I've gotten my 1701 my audio for receive in analog and dmr was really low even when I had the nob turned all the way up idk if I bought a defaulted radio or what but when you received traffic on your 1701 was your audio the same ? Curious

DM-1801 uses USB, the cable does not do any thing active. most other radios use serial, the usb to serial converter is in the cable.

I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago and he replied this one (DM1801) but keep in mind that IT IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE TO DOWNLOAD THE OPENGD77 software, and the stock has very few feature, I am considering selling the one I just bought in favor of the TYT uv390 (that is closer to the dm 1701 of the baofeng but better). consider that the monitor mode on the dm 1801 doesn't work at all and I had to buy several programming cables before finding anyone that works, and the sofware is difficult to find too.

Looking forward to your thought on this radio. I've purchased and tested two dm1801 radios. The first was what I considered defective, but the second one is great with acceptable harmonics. After reviewing, I also did a video on open dm1801/opengd77, which I feel really made the radio. Hotspot mode is nice.

Justin, Question. I got the Radioddity QB25 and trying to program it with Chirp. Trying to download the radio I get an error, The radio failed to go into the Clone Mode. Any ideas. Thanks, KH6JMK

@@HamRadio2 OKay, thanks, I thought if anyone would have heard of that error you would have. So, I give up. I left HAM radio 40 years about and all we had was Windows. The world has changed a lot since then and nearly all major companies have learned to make an app for Windows and one for the rest of us on Macs. it seems that only HAN companies have not got the word since then. Companies like Icom and Bridge Systems and Baofeng and others. I tried a Bridge Sytems and I asked the well recommend customer service what a Mac guy suppose to do. Their answer was - Waite for it - BUY A WINDOWS MACHINE! I returned their dam radio. Wait for it - I purchased the cheapest Windows machine I could today. Amazing. Thanks for all you. do.

I have 1701 and 1801, both are great. It depends what you want, but in general 1801, because of custom firmwares and stuff you can do.

I have an 1801uv I tried cps software called dr1801a6 it looks nothing like what you showed I have added my talk groups, channels, contacts, named a zone wrote to radio radio stuck on 1 channel only up/down doesn't do anything can't make a connection. Parrot won't load everything comes up connect failed

We're not supposed to use encryption with Ham Radio, so I have never played around with it

Encryption doesn't work with stock firmware (tested with my LMR license) and the replacement firmware only supports ham functions. Tested with another 1801 and a Anytone 878.

every time a transmission comes in, it comes in as alert-private call. I have it set as a group not private. anyone knows why?

I purchased an DR-1801, and have found little help online. 1) The radio on high power only transmits .9 watts on digital. 2) I cannot get the encryption to work. 3) I cannot receive Motorola MOTOTRBO signals for some reason. Not sure if this radio is worth the money, it more for very close point-to point range communications. Does not work well for repeater use,. Anyone with a different experience? Thanks!

These are basically throw away radios. Are you using a TDMA power meter when reading the power? If not, then the 0.9w isn't accurate. I've never tried encryption since we don't use it in Ham Radio. It isn't going to match up with a Motorola radio but you should be able to talk between the two radios.

@@HamRadio2 Yes they are. And no, I did not use a TDMA meter, just a regular Bird. I am a HAM, so aware of the encryption deal, but they advertise encryption, plus that it will listen to Motorola DMR, all BS. Thanks for responding.

I am not a ham just yet. So take this with a grain of salt. I am a radio enthusiasts Cb radio , gmrs. Have been learning for the test. And checking out radios. In my opinion baofeng radios are not worth the time you wait to get them. Horrible Horrible little radios and the power levels are a joke. I pickid up a dr 1801uv to play with and its an absolute joke. Its for sale along with 14 other baojunk radios.
