You can get yourself a new Baofeng UV-5G Plus here: amzn.to/46THBug
***UPDATE! The Baofeng UV-17R ham radio also has this feature, and it is even less expensive than the UV-5G Plus - You can get the UV-17R here: amzn.to/3TqyZbA
Baofeng has put a new hidden feature on at least some of its new radios - the One Touch Frequency Search. This new almost hidden feature allows the radio to scan all frequencies (UHF, VHF, or the 200Mhz range) for any strong/close signal. The Baofeng radio will then display what frequency is being transmitted along with any CTCSS or DCS tone that is in use. Baofeng barely mentions this feature in the radio manual and some of the Baofeng sales literature describes it as "Wireless Frequency Copy" because it will allow you to save the frequency it scans/detects and the CTCSS or DCS tone into a channel.
This is a great new feature hidden away in these new Baofeng GMRS (and maybe?) Baofeng ham radios.

hey randy, do you remember the Baofeng GMRS-9R? that radio cannot be unlocked, but i found a way to partially "unlock" it, there is a way with chirp to open the frequencies one by one. First, to make it easier is better to have an .img file from another radio that can transmit on other frequencies than the GMRS ones (a UV-5 will work) is not necessary but makes things easier, in chirp on the help menu you need to enable developer functions and restart chirp, then download the info from the radio (on chirp i did it with the UV-9G profile), when the info is downloaded from the radio (with the developer functions enabled) a new tab below the memories and adjustments will be shown named browser, next to it a dropdown menu with the word root will be shown. Browsing in that menu clicking on the plus sign more option will appear, in the first one named memory you will find the 128 memory channels and the edition input interfaz to edit the channels, here is where the .img file from the other radio could help to guide and don't mess it up. When everything is updated with the new info just upload it to the radio and voila, you can transmit to other frequencies in the range from 136-174 and 400-520 magigahertz. Take in consideration that this only works on Chanel Mode, frequency mode will work to input the frequency manually only for GMRS, however i have the confidence that someone will find the way to completely unlock the radio. I know this is not an easy way to do it, feel free to email me if i made you to confockulate yoursefl with my jibber jabber...

@TheNotaRubicon The Talkpod A36 Plus does, and it does it better. The Baofeng is inaccurate (let me explain). What I learned about Baofeng's frequency search feature is that the radio lacks attenuation. The reciever gets overloaded which causes the frequency inaccuracy. This could easily be solved with a firmware update. But for now you have 2 alternatives for accurate readings. 1st option is to set the squelch to the highest level before scanning. Again, this is a EASY firmware fix if they actually gave a damn. The 2nd option is to basically remove the antenna before scanning. Both of these tricks compensate for the lack of attenuation accuratly 99% of the time. The downside here is Baofeng doesn't provide firmware updates for their basic analog radios. Future radios may be fixed, but current radios are pretty much stuck the way they are. Maybe if we make enough noise about it someone will listen.

Does it just find the frequency and tone, then you must program the radio manually to match - or is there a way to both find and use it automatically without extra steps? I’m trying this on my UV5G. It finds the tone and frequency but when I hit push to talk or exit the finder mode, the radio is still on the old settings. Having to remember and change the settings manually is… tiresome. You can't mess with my Freedoms! I am a Teenager! And I know it! So only mom and dad get in trouble! So I don't have to. Before I had gotten that, Transmitter. I had first, purchased myself a RadioShack, D-150, Shortwave Receiver. And while it was a nice big tabletop model. It could also be run from, 12 Volts, externally. Aha! I had a thing for equipment models with the numbers 150 in them I guess? As they were not exactly designed, to work with each other.. Except together and apart. It wasn't just a single Transceiver. Like a CB radio is. Or other Ham Rigs. It was the old-fashioned À la carte, component style. And it looks more impressive. It takes up more counterspace. And the pieces of gear look different from each other. And that's a Ham Radio Shack. With No Relation nor Connections with the Tandy Leather Company. That own RadioShack. When they were still A Thing. And everybody had a, TRS- 80 Color Computer. That did a whole lot of, NUTHIN'. But hey. We all had to have one. And I had the very first Laptop! The TRS-100. With a huge, 32 character by 8 line,, B & W LCD Display! It was the hottest state-of-the-art thing in the world! In 1983. And then I got my Motorola 8000 Cellular Phone! When there was But one, Cellular Provider in the USA. Cellular One. And every call you made. Cost about 6 cents,, per minute! I almost went bankrupt! When I got a $630 phone bill one month! And I remember those Daze. As I wasn't confused. I was merely Dazed. And I had to change my ways. That hurt. Especially in 1983 dollars. And if you did the math for today. It's more than my rent is now. So I definitely appreciate the change in our Cellular Services available today. It is now virtually affordable. For everybody. And they do everything.. And if you can afford all the extra accessories? But I digress.. Back to Illegal Nocturnal Transmissions. During the daytime hours. When the, atmospheric ionization is high. And radio distances, Shortened. So I strung a couple pieces of wire. Around the frame of my bicycle. For, an, antenna.. Not much of an antenna. 7 Vita wire. And I took a couple of bungee cords. And I strapped this large, Tabletop, RadioShack SW,, receiver. To my handlebars.. And for power? Well if it can work on 12 Volts. Maybe it will still power up from a 9 volt, battery? And… What do you know? It does!.. And it is receiving radio stations from all over the place.. Great! Now. As a 14-year-old. I already had assembled. Basically. A, Mono/Monaural, Radio Station like, mixer. With cueing and, 4 inputs. Consisting of a pair of turntables. 2 reel to reel recorders. A cassette deck. And an, NAB, Cartridge Recorder. A real radio station,, control room. And oh what fun I had with it. It was gear my dad helped me to accrue. And his late father's reel to reel recorder I butchered.. Though I never asked dad if I could do that. And he never said anything about it. As the transport was kaput. And I was able to rescue and repurpose the electronics. And turn it into a broadcast mixer. Like a Phoenix Bird. From the ashes! I was so proud of myself. So back in the late 1960s. Along with Les Paul. As a young teenager. I had quite a little production system. And I could make like a DJ! And I did. I would put together, a, 3 hour-long, Radio Station style, DJ mix tape.. Of a Radio Show. With me announcing over the intro to the songs. Like you would hear on any Top 40 Radio Station. As I was already practicing for my career as an FM rock 'n' roll DJ. Because that's what I wanted to do for a career. So on this particular day. I wired my reel to reel recorder. Up to my Shortwave Transmitter. And I screw around with the,, Tuning, inside of it. And I'm able to put myself. Onto the International Shortwave Bands. Outside out of the Ham Bands. And I turn on my radio show into the transmitter. I tested first with the Dummy Load Light Bulb. And it's Modulating Great! And it sounds great on my shortwave receiver. Sitting right next to my transmitter. It sounds Fabulous! I'm on the air! And I'm listening to myself! So I shut the transmitter down. And I connected to my, 12 foot tall, 50 foot long, Inverted,, L Dipole Antenna.. And I switch everything back on. And put it into Transmit Mode. I get on my bicycle. Put my headphones on. Before there was ever a Walkman. And I start riding my bicycle with my Shortwave Receiver On. And I'm listening to my Radio Show! Somewhere near the 20 m Band.. On the International Frequencies. And my Signals sounds Great! On just a 9 volt battery! And my Signal Strength Meter is all the way up to 10! As I got about, 3 miles away from my house. My Signal Strict meters still showed 10. Oh… Oh? I've been on the air too long now. I better get home and shut this down before the FCC gets there before me! So about one hour into my broadcasts. I finally made it back home. And shut everything down. I freaked out. I was getting out halfway around the world. Playing rock 'n' roll, yeah kids it's, Remy Rocking You! Whoops! They could have found me. I got lucky. And it was pretty much that episode. Where I no longer wanted to bother with Amateur Radio. I wanted to be a Professional, on the air. And getting a paycheck for it. When I turned 15. Just weeks after my birthday. I cut school on a Friday afternoon. I got on a Metro Great Lakes Transit Bus. And went downtown Detroit to the FCC building. Where I walked in. Signed up. And in a classroom like environment with others. I take my 3rd Class FCC Radiotelephone License Test. And I ace it. Holy moly! I never aced any tests in school, before. This was a 1st! So I asked the nice FCC lady. How long it would be before I get my license? She said about 10 days to 2 weeks. I continued smiling. At least I thought I did? I thanked her very much. And I left. At around 330 in the afternoon. And I really felt great about myself. And my accomplishment. I just taken my first step forward. Into my Professional Broadcasting Career. But now I have to wait a couple of weeks to get my license. And at 15 years of age. That's like a year!

you could, but you would need a radio that can scan for tones and you would need to monitor the input frequency of the repeater and you would have to be in range of someone transmitting to the repeater, and scan it while they are transmitting .. You cannot simply grab the tone off the output of the repeater. .

On Saturday morning the mail came. My mother tells me I just got a piece of mail. Mail for me? Who would be sending me email? The mail was from the FCC. I was confused by this. I never did get the study guide from them. I figured this was the study guide from them. That I never got. I was going to tear it in half without opening it.. But my curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to see how different the FCC study guide was to the commercial one I had purchased at, Lafayette Electronics. When I opened the envelope. There was no study guide inside. There was my Brand New License.. It wasn't 24 hours since I had taken the test. This was not possible. I couldn't quite, believe it? How was this possible? But oh my God! I've got it in my hand! That Monday morning back to high school. My high school had a, Educational FM Radio Station. But I couldn't get into the course. However the teacher told me. If I got my broadcast license. She would put me on the air. Doing what I wanted to do.. Playing rock 'n' roll.. Before the football games after school. Because the football games didn't start until later. And the radio station was stay on the air to cover the football game with a play-by-play announcer. But until the game started. It was all rock 'n' roll. So I go in that Monday morning until the teacher. Here's my license! Now she had just told me about two weeks earlier. To get my license. And there's no way. I could have obtained this quickly. So she took me into her office and sat me down. And picked up her phone.. And started making a phone call. I asked her who she was calling? She said the police. The police? Why? She said this is a counterfeit. I said no it's not! I took the test on Friday. I got the license on Saturday. She said that's not possible. I said I know. But it came. I asked her to please call the FCC. So she did. And she told him she believed she had a counterfeit license she was looking at. And gave them the number. They said no. That's my license. They verified it. It must've been the same lady? She must've taken it directly to the post office back door. Walked on in. And said something like, Frank? Do you think you get this out for me? The expression in my face must have changed? Even though I thought I had continued to smile? And Mrs. Bickel looks at me now with a big smile on her face and asks me. Would you like to do Sign off? Oh yeah would I ever! And this concludes another Broadcast Day. For, WOKK-FM operating at, 88.9 MHz. With an, Effective Radiated Power of 10 Watts. Provided By, the Royal Oak, Michigan, Board of Education. Thank you for Listening. And until Tomorrow. At the beginning of another School Day. We will see you then. Now,, Please Stand for our National Anthem. Oh yeah baby! I was on my way! And I hit the button. And there was the U.S. Air Force Band. And sounds of jets flying overhead. What a Stellar Sign off. My Very 1st! Words on broadcast radio. And that was the end. Of my Amateur Radio Life. The Skies the Limit! But really even Deep Space. I shall be flying through the cosmos. For all eternity to come. I have Cemented My Eternity. In,, Electromagnetic Waves. How cool is that? And all at the Speed Of Light! And you don't get any tickets. And over 50 years later. My rock 'n' roll broadcast. Haven't yet made it to Andromeda. 2 Million Light Years, away. So they will not be hearing my fine rock 'n' roll radio show for a while yet. All of them. Every night. Overnight. I'm still streaking through the cosmos. I am not yet up to Beetlejuice. Though well past alpha Centauri.. And all the others there. Proxima and B. Or whatever? So Screw Amateur Radio! I like having, 50,000 Watts of Brutal Power. At the FM Rock Station. All of them. What a gas what a blast! What fun. And getting paid for it? Work? That's a four letter word. Rock. That's another one but? Once you're on a roll. There's no going back. There is no stopping you. From reaching further. Though I think, Donnie. Had a tendency to reach for the wrong items? And what was unique about being an FM Rock Jock. On a #1 Major Market Big City Radio Station. We had Request Lines. 6 of them. And they would just flash all night long. A lot of DJs. Weren't interested in answering the request lines. They only wanted to play. What they wanted to hear. I was different. I liked to hear from my Audience. And I answered a lot of calls. I tried to get those requests on within minutes. And they all knew it. And you develop a following. Because they know. You are there for them! Yes I was. Because I loved doing it. And with that. Came a lot of other Requests. From lovely young ladies. All wanting to come down to the Radio Station. For various and sundry reasons they had. But I liked my job. And most of us did not do that. Though you could have a friend with you from time to time. Just not that way. From groupies. Because they are, groupies. And we were all sort of, Regional Celebrities. Before the Internet ever existed. Before cellular phones ever existed. Before home computers became a thing. This is what entertainment was all about. This is where you heard the new music. And it meant something. When there was something to be meant. And it changed the course of history. And to this very day. I can still hardly believe. I was a Little Cog. In this Transmission Media.. And it was just Awesome. Back in the mid-1970s and throughout the 1980s and 90s. With the new Millennium. Came a Huge Shift. And all of our lives would be Irrevocably changed. As we all put computers with high resolution video recorders and cameras in our pockets. That began to do all the thinking for everybody. The Ultimate Adult Toy. To keep all of the, Adult Children, quiets and occupied. At red lights. As they are then, Delivering Doughnuts, on another Planet. HONK! Because adult children just can't put them down for a minute. I'm so glad I'm not a child. RemyRAD
