You can tighten the nut for the antenna connector using the volume knob. It's got a built in tool for the job!

Now THAT'S a really cool tidbit of info and a great feature. It is always a bit challenging to get those off without scratching something even with the adjustable spanner device I have or my needlenose pliers with the very fine points. BRAVO and Thanks!👌👌👌

I broke my monitor on my favorite Baofeng.... and this video shows me exactly how to get to it! You thought of all the details, including using a flat item (blade) to keep the soft-button from getting pushed out of place during reassembly. Thanks for this! Just saved my favorite radio by letting me do a repair without breaking my radio!!!

When shooting against a white background you should boost your exposure a little. Otherwise the camera tries to just calculate neutral gray for the whole scene and you get this. Under exposed details against a grayish background.

Don't muck with needle nose pliers on the antenna connector. The volume knob has the correct cuts for loosening and tightening the antenna connector.

I have a UV9R-ERA, slightly larger radio and additional water/dust resistance. This was a very helpful video to get mine apart. Main differences - remove battery first, there are 4 TORX screws on the back under the battery rather than 2 (T8 worked), speaker and accessory connection are attached to the radio with a ribbon cable, plus there are O-rings and gaskets on most connections which require additional caution for disassembly and assembly.

I have the UV9R-plus, and thanks to this vid I could get it open. My signal reception was very poor (on a new unit!), but I managed to fix it by resoldering the antenna connection on the PCB, and cleaning some green muck (corrosion?) from the PCB. 🤘

Finally inventoried all my Baofeng's and found only one UV5R in black. :-) From my experience, all the different flavors of the UV5 radios are really similar. Other models from other brands are suspiciously similar, too, and sell at many times the price. Every one of my Baofeng's work. They're extremely versatile. The innards are almost artistic, both in form and function. Repair parts are even available,. They've become a type of standard. That one other-branded HT I bought came in defective. Wish I had bought five more UV5R's instead. I find significant use in the UV5's hardware and associated software, employing them as much as instrumentation, as transceivers, Always at hand. I even experimented on 1.25 meters. Cheap. Those pioneers who cobbled together their own Amateur radios would really envy these. There is great value in professional grade communications equipment, but it cannot be shared as freely as these. I wish there was even more interest in them.

Thanks for the teardown video. I wish you would have just finished the last step and removed the board from the metal plate so we could all see the other side of the board. It's nice to get a good close up of the chips and coils.

I had to dismantle my UV 5R , the internal adhesive used around the screen had become problematic insofar as after cleaning created permanent trace marks on the screen cover , it's ok , just a little annoying , plus regardless of compressed air cleaning there's dust traces trapped .

I glanced though this video briefly and I don't think I saw you remove the window that is in front of the LCD display. Is it possible to do so? Mine is scratched and I may have to look for a suitable replacement soon. Thanks!

You didn't take off the board, which is the worst part as you need to remove the display to get to two screws. When you refit the screen you might have problems with the display function.

You can possibly cut out the window and replace it with new piece. Maybe some epoxy can keep it in place and also keep moisture and dust out.

I've owned (6) UV-5Rs and the Modulation is always been half of other band radios! Is there Pots for Mic and Deviation adjustments or is this all Menu settings Nobody knows about! Great Video on the tear down and re assembly! Thanks!

Hi pal. Great vid. I’m in the process of putting a UV-5RE inside a dummy PRC148 shell. Like you I’m adept at electronics but I wanted to know how easy the on/off pot would be to unsolder and run on flyleads to another location?

Crashtest Airsoft I have not tried to remove the pot before. Since the pot has larger pads on the PCB, it might be easier than dealing with the tiny surface mount parts. Good luck!

Hey OM , Motorola, used to sell spanners for those nuts, came free with ever radio. I was hoping you would open the microwave casting, to show ppl how to repair/replace SMA connector. I had the joy of buying junked radios at auction , great learning experience. A young guy said" how'd you learn to fix that stuff?" I replied , My dad made me fix what I broke, or explain why I could/should not. No school like a junk box! KB5ZXM or FCC PG9-6292 cheer's . Good hunting for gremlins.

John Egan , these came with new radios, I bet any Motorola, radio shop has hands full, General Electric did the same. simple little things, like an antenna nut tool, but bent at an angle. Just two prongs on a flat strap, drill a hole , to allow shaft, cut the strap bend to suit your size.

The moni button needs alignment. Mine did the same thing. I took it apart and now it works. So fix it.

On two of mine I have a scratchy volume control when adjusting the volume level.. Was hoping to get a spray of Deoxit in there by taking the radio apart but as I watch the video it appears that the volume control might be sealed making spraying the Deoxit impossible. Has anyone attempted to clean the volume control? Any luck? Thanks.....

I think that screw (not adjustment) is part of what holds the radio together... probably holds the heatsink to the RF PA..

No worries if you break speaker wires. I did and it was not that hard to solder it back. Anyone with soldering iron.station can do it.

Its a bit dark! I have my brightness on full and I still cant see it. I had to save from YT and put it in VLC and turn up the brightness.

HI EYE-ON STUFF Realy enjoyed your video can you please help i recently removed the battery on mine with the unit switched on and now it wont work when you disassembled the unit did you notice a protection diode etc in the unit hope you can help DOWN UNDER TERRY CHEERS

I did not notice a protection diode. The ones I have appear to be fairly robust. I remember doing the same thing, removing the battery and not switching it off and i have not had any issues. I do remember one time the radio lost all power and did not appear to work, but I figured out that the battery was not making a good connection. I had to re-install the battery with more force and it started working again. In your case, maybe you can try another battery or check the voltage of the one you have. I hope you get it working.

You would need to unsolder display for that...

No you don't need to unsolder anything in the process. To take off the circuit board to get to the mic/headphone jacks. You simple remove all the phillips head screws. There is 1 screw under the screen. If you remove the 2 screws from the screen, just peel it back. It's not actually connected by cables. The screen lifts off easy. Just be careful when you replace the PCB, there are 4 small pins that need to be lined up that connect to power.

I highly doubt there are any user-repairable parts inside this radio, so I don't see a reason why one would try this unless the radio indeed gets banned and they see a need to repair one with parts from another. Cool video though. Surprisingly well put together for a $20 radio!

El autor está totalmente loco; no tiene ningún sentido mostrar como desarma parcialmente el equipo, si luego procede a cerrar nuevamente el mismo. Lo que puede ocurrir al novato que quiera hacer lo mismo es que luego de cerrarlo compruebe que se quedó el equipo, sin audio recibido, o sea que no le funcione el parlante por rotura del cable que es muy delicado.
