What does it mean to be "born again in the spirit"?
In “Catholic Central: Baptism,” Kai and Libby look at the first sacrament, which is common to all Christians (Jesus was also baptized). Even outside of Christianity - and often in movies and TV -- entering into, and emerging from, water is a universal symbol of renewed life, a way of being born again “of water and the spirit.”

Generally love these videos for my middle school students. However, commenting about Confirmation, Libby said it's a time for them to make a "personal testimony on their own behalf." This might happen for some but it is not the purpose or function of this Sacrament. Confirmation does not depend on a person's testimony. This kind of comment just leads people to think of Confirmation as something THEY do instead of something GOD does. This is a serious problem. This kind of comment also calls into question the Eastern Catholic practice of giving all three Sacraments of Initiation to babies, a practice which is perfectly valid.
@CatholicCentralVideos
@CatholicCentralVideos 5 месяцев назад
Dear @joannagogl9414, with the sacrament of Confirmation, the person being confirmed does choose to be confirmed. It is up to them to make the decision whether to receive the sacrament. As part of the process of catechesis for this sacrament, the person to be confirmed will - in one way or another - “testify” to their willingness to receive the sacrament. The second step in the formal rite of Confirmation is the "renewal of baptismal promises" recited by the confirmands. This follows the invocation of the Holy Spirit and precedes the laying on of hands. So, while it is true that the seal of the Holy Spirit is the result of divine action, it presumes (or certainly ceremonially includes) an assent of the participant, except in certain cases. This parallels the affirmation of faith spoken by the parents and Godparents in Baptism, and even the presumption of an informed faith on the part of the communicant in Holy Eucharist as an element in the efficacy of the sacrament ("cooperation with grace" etc.), even though again there are exceptions. This is why the sacrament is not given to the uninitiated as if it were some kind of voodoo magic that works as a spell beyond the recipient's volition. But you are correct in your saying that the sacrament is ultimately God’s doing, but it does not mean it excludes the dignity and necessity of spiritual desire.

Does the priest say the same thing at an adult baptism that he says at an infant baptism, which is, "So-and-so, I baptize you"? Or does he say at the adult baptism, "So-and-so, *based on your profession of faith,* I baptize you"?
@CatholicCentralVideos

Hi Daniel, in paragraph 317 of the current "Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults" (RCIA) which was compiled in the 1980's, the text is the same as the baptism of a child: "(name) I baptize you in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit." It is not up to us, though, to say whether a baptism that uses the formula you describe is valid or not. If you have a concern, you may want to contact your local bishop's office.

Hi Zapul, traditionally only the "Oil of the Catechumens" and "Sacred Chrism" are used for Baptism. The third, the "Oil of the Sick" is reserved for anointing of the sick. The use of the Oil of the Catechumens is optional and, during the pandemic, some are opting not to use it as it involves direct contact with the skin. Most who do use it are using some sort of applicator, such as a cotton ball.

Do you have any advice on what to say to the Christians that use scripture to say baptism has to be with the formula in the Name of Jesus. What is the Catholic understanding of repent and be baptized in the Name of Jesus. I know it does not mean the formula for baptism is In the Name of Jesus.
@CatholicCentralVideos
@CatholicCentralVideos 2 года назад
Hi Jennifer, The formula used for a valid baptism in the Catholic Church is the one instituted by Jesus in Matthew 28:19 when he says to his disciples "Go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." This is known as the Trinitarian formula and as you see is quite different from just baptizing "in the Name of Jesus." We believe that with a valid baptism all the sins previous to that baptism have been washed away. The person has a new life. All of us are called to repentance though, even after Baptism. Interestingly, if a person has been baptized in another Christian denomination and is later received into the Catholic Church, that original baptism is considered valid if it was administered using the Trinitarian formula. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1256). This calls us to recognize our spiritual kinship with our sisters and brothers in the larger Christian community, an awareness more important than ever. Meantime, go and make disciples of all nations!

@@CatholicCentralVideos thank you very much! That's beautiful! If you have any advice on what to say to oneness Pentecostal that insists that it must be in the Name of Jesus and must be immersion I would love to hear your thoughts on that.
@CatholicCentralVideos
@CatholicCentralVideos 2 года назад
Hi Jennifer, Matthew 28:18 makes the formula pretty clear to us, but we understand that the theology and practice of Oneness Pentecostals (and their rejection of a Trinitarian God) is different from ours, as is their reading of this particular verse of scripture. Regarding immersion, Catholics feel that any one of three accepted methods constitutes a valid baptism: full immersion, affusion or pouring water, and aspersion or sprinkling water. Scripturally, there is no basis for insisting on full immersion. There’s a vague description in Acts 8:38 of people “going down to the water,” but it is by no means definitive. As Catholics, when we engage with other Christians whose closely-held beliefs are unlikely to change, our best approach is to embrace what we both hold in common. All Christians can agree on the saving power of Christ’s love, and love is a victory far greater than winning an argument. Love is also the Holy Spirit at work, and who knows where the Spirit will blow its winds of transformation?

Catholics weren’t around when Jesus was. How could Jesus institute sacraments written in the 1500s?
@CatholicCentralVideos
@CatholicCentralVideos 2 года назад
Hi Pagpapaitim. Catholics do believe that the origin of all seven sacraments can be found in the New Testament. Jesus instituted two of the seven sacraments directly when he said to “Do this in memory of me” (Eucharist) and to “Go baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Baptism). Jesus is intimately associated with the other five sacraments described in scripture and they came into practice within the first hundred years or so after he ascended. We are not sure where you got your information regarding the sacraments being “written in the 1500’s.” The Council of Trent, held from 1545 to 1563, formally affirmed the seven sacraments, but by then they had all been part of Christian life for well over a thousand years. For a more in depth and correct look at what Catholics believe about the sacraments, we have individual episodes on all of them, plus our episode “What’s Catholic” which puts the sacraments in the larger context of Catholic sacramentality. You may want to check these out, plus have a look at our Episode guide for more information and insights.

@@CatholicCentralVideos oh... 2 of 7... well.... it's not 7. it's 2. You may want to check where Jesus actually says to be Catholic. Still waiting on you.
@CatholicCentralVideos
@CatholicCentralVideos 2 года назад
Hi again, Pagpapaitim, Jesus himself never said “Be Catholic.” He said, “Follow me.” Those who did follow him came to be known as Catholics after St.Ignatius of Antioch first introduced the term “Catholic Church” (literally meaning “universal church”) in a letter to the Smyrnaeans around 110AD. From then and for the next thousand years of Christian history the followers of Jesus identified themselves by no other name. Catholics today still practice the Catholicism of those earliest followers. We are not sure what you mean by “Still waiting for you.” We answered your question about the sacraments, explaining that they existed centuries before the 1500s. The early Church identified seven of them, all rooted in scripture. In the interest of space, we cited the scriptural basis for only Baptism and Eucharist, directing you to our series of seven episodes to learn about the others. We still urge you to do so. But here is a synopsis of the other five sacraments to give you a “7 of 7” understanding of the biblical origin of these gifts that have transformed the followers of Jesus for over two millennia. Besides Baptism and Eucharist, there is the Sacrament of Reconciliation based on Jesus’ ministry of forgiving sins and proclaiming salvation to the lost. In the upper room after his resurrection, Jesus breathes on his disciples, stating, “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them” (John 20:23). The Sacrament of Confirmation is traced back to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at his Baptism and on his followers at Pentecost (John 20:22, Acts 2:1-4), after which several of apostles went to Samaria and prayed over the followers of Jesus to receive the Holy Spirit. They did this because, as Acts 8 tell us, these followers “had only been baptized” and these prayers “confirmed” their life in the spirit and their commitment to Christ. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be traced to the New Testament Letter of James (5:14): “Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.” As for the Sacrament of marriage, the Bible begins with the creation of man and woman in the image and likeness of God and very soon refers to them becoming “one flesh” (Genesis 1-2). Besides the many references to the covenant of marriage throughout the New Testament, Jesus performs his first miracle at a wedding (John 2:1-11) and later defends the nature of marriage when he declares, “What God has joined together, let no one separate” (Matthew 19:6). Finally, Holy Orders arises from Jesus’ appointment of the Apostles to extend his ministry of teaching, healing, and proclaiming salvation (Matthew 10:1-8). Later, the Apostles pray and lay their hands on other “men of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom” to share in the ministry (Acts 6:3-6). This begins the tradition of a bishop’s “laying on of hands” to ordain a candidate as a bishop, priest, or deacon.

How can a baby make a conscious decision go follow cbrist?
@CatholicCentralVideos
@CatholicCentralVideos Год назад
Hi Gonzalo, of course a baby cannot make a conscious decision to go and follow Christ. This is why Libby asks the same question in the episode, and the dialogue that follows provides the answer. LIBBY : Maybe now you're asking, "What's up with baby baptism?" KAI: Why do Catholics baptize babies when they are way too cute and too babyish to have committed sins that need to be washed away? LIBBY : Baptism is not just a testimony of faith, but faith publicly professed is a necessary condition for baptism. You might wonder, in infant baptism, who's faith is required. KAI: Scripture tells us that the faith of the parents fully suffices for the baptism of their children. Just like the Old Testament where Jewish parents like Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple, parents present the infant to God in baptism to be sealed as His throughout their life. LIBBY : Later, they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and complete their initiation in the sacrament of confirmation. It's a time when people make a personal testimony and commitment to Christ on their own behalf.

@CatholicCentralVideos
@CatholicCentralVideos 2 года назад
Your example of the Good Thief requires some context. Elsewhere in the New Testament, baptism is consistently preached by Jesus and the early Church as a sacramental norm of initiation into the body of Christ. “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and spirit” says Jesus definitively in John 3:5. Elsewhere Jesus enjoins us to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19-20) Early on when Jesus is about to begin his ministry , John asks Jesus why he wants to be baptized, and Jesus answers “in order to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3: 13-17). Righteousness is submitting to God’s plan of salvation, which for Jesus includes identifying with human sinfulness and therefore accepting baptism just as sinners do for their salvation. After the momentous event of Pentecost, Peter immediately preaches repentance and baptism to the crowds gathered from all across the Roman Empire: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins." (Acts 2:38) And when Paul is imprisoned in Philippi, the Roman guard cries out: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Paul not only baptizes the guard but his entire family as well. (Acts 16:25) But what about the Good Thief? In the Vatican II document, Lumen Gentium, the Church teaches that “those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience-those too may attain eternal salvation." (LG 128) The Good Thief would certainly be included among these souls, in his case one who only attains knowledge of Jesus in the final moments of his life and will join his Savior in Paradise without having been baptized. But very few Christians, of any denomination, would use this as a 100% biblical generalization that “we don’t have to be baptized to be saved.” At the same time, baptism doesn't mean that we will be saved automatically no matter what! What we do know for certain, in light of God's vast mercy, is that “God our savior wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3-4).

(Hebrews 9'22) "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood." (Rom 3,24-25) "Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate." Of course our salvation comes through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. But that is not all. Why does Peter say “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins." (Acts 2:38). Jesus Himself said “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and spirit” (John 3:5) and then commands his disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19-20).
