Baptize Me, from the musical The Book of Mormon. Performed in Santa Barbara High School Theatre's Music of the Night 2015, a student directed Broadway revue.
+NIc E I went to school in California and I tend not to believe this. At my old school we had plenty of girls getting in trouble for wearing tank top straps that were like half an inch too narrow.
Germae Anne they did it in my high school too, only that when they went behind the curtains the guy turned the girl around and bent her and when they came back out she had her hair and face wet
For everyone saying she's white: it's not the full production, it's just this song, so it's kind of out of context. This song could work with a girl of any skin colour because it doesn't fit in with a storyline when it's on it's own.
It’s called acting, it don’t matter what color you are. They used to have white men play native Americans because there weren’t many Native American actors back in the day
No one laughed because the actors aren’t supposed to be pretty white kids. She’s supposed to be an African woman and he’s supposed to be a chubby virgin nerd… this is so out of context.
Agree that too much overt bodily innuendo takes away from it. I see a lot of covers do it too. It’s like explaining the punchline of a joke. It’s obvious and should go unsaid. The subtle innuendo is what makes it funny where there is nothing you could point to to say that it’s definitely about sex. Too much bodily sexual gestures ruin it.
I can’t compare it to the original because I still haven’t seen it (I know I’m a failure to me also), but the innuendos in the dancing seems way too over the top
it's less, um, overly sexual and more campy in the original, here, here's a link to the youtube version, it's terrible quality but i can't find any others with the (so to speak) original cast (e.g. Andrew Rannels, Josh Gad) = ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7VcPiPVJOdI.html
Great job! And I don't see why people are so focused on the race(if they did We Are Africa, that'd be a little weird) and weight, and then those people who think this is awful for the highschool to allow this. First off I'm gonna guess this is like my schools I went too in a predominantly white area where there's the black kid,and maybe another, way she goes. And I don't care if that ginger isn't a fat kid he did amazing, especially the gun holster part hahaha And then to those people who are disgusted for some reason,it's called art,yah you can criticize it,you can not like it,you can let it upset you,but guess what, you can also not observe it...don't opress talent, just leave the auditorium...
HackStack Nic Rouleau has been Price the longest. He has had something like 50 different Cunningham actors. Several have been thin. In fact, when that happens, they change the line from "fat white guy" to "weird white guy."
They were just performing this song as a standalone piece, not doing the whole play. The female wasn't playing "Nabalungi the African girl", she's just playing a girl.
Tyler Oakley Yeah you're sooo right bro. And how dare those black people play white characters, am I right? Gosh have you seen Hamilton? Pfffff soooo disgusting!
Shame on all of you! I'm not LDS but this must be said. Do you people not see what you're doing? You are trying so hard to remove someone's ability to worship in PEACE. All of your judgment, scorn and mockery removes peace. Guess what, if the LDS lose their ability to worship without fear, all of you could lose that very same thing too. We should be supporting every person's ability to worship without judgment. Any true Christian would fight for another's right to worship Jesus Christ (or whatever Deity that promotes peace) however they personally see fit. I support the LDS as much as I support Jehovah's Witness, Baptist, Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist, etc. to worship however they see best because I don't want to lose MY freedom and peace.
It’s not the full show. They just decided to perform a scene together. And this scene doesn’t have anything to do with race, so it doesn’t really affect the substance. It’s not like the girl stole the role in a major production from a WOC - which definitely happens - it’s just the scene they chose to do together
I mean I’m a black guy but if you have a problem w this then why don’t you have a problem with the fact that the original musical cast American blacks as Africans instead of real Africans. The whole point of acting is portraying something you’re not. 007 is meant to be a white male but it doesn’t mean we should be outraged if they casted a black woman (which they did)
Chinese ( 漢字 ) = passive , guilty , negative American ( alpha beta ) = active , faith , positive Religion = Chinese ( 漢字 ) ~~ American ( alpha beta ) The Mormon is American whom I can say English freely with them
StayAliveForJoshler Because it is a whole song chock-full of sexual innuendos and suggestive positions performed by and to teenagers and most likely younger kids were in the audience as well.
Emmy Gerard the whole Book of Mormon is like that. If that's the case, children shouldn't be read Shakespeare since most of his plays are majority full of sexually suggestive speech.
Lamont3211 I definitely don't think the whole production should be a high school production. None of the Shakespeare I read in high school was that bad.
You know actually, I was never brainwashed. I made my own decision to get baptized. And honestly even though you don’t believe it’s true, what’s wrong with an organization that teaches people to serve those around them? To use good language, to be honest, to cherish their family, not focus on fame or fortune, to get married and love your spouse, care for your kids, to not drink or smoke or kill or steal, go to church on Sundays, dress modestly. Please do tell me what’s wrong with any of that...
that not right to bring this to a school where mormons kids can be. flat out wrong to make fun of a peaceful religion and them force mormon kids to be around it. not good people.
carterbroadway39 you're kidding right... the musical itself is never malicious to mormons, it just pokes fun at most religious beliefs. thats what trey and matt, the writers, do.
yes im serious. it ridicules mormon beliefs. it crosses the line because mormons consider these topics (baptism and the priesthood) sacred. its offensive and i dont care where else they play it...its a free country. but not in front of mormon kids forced by a school to watch it because they have to attend the school.
@@carterbroadway39 What makes you think that anyone was "forced" to watch it? It was likely an evening performance by a student group within the school, which people could attend if they felt like it. And you don't know that that are even Mormons at that school in the first place so it's a silly argument on both counts. Besides which, religion is ridiculous and deserves to be called out on its absurdities. The only reason that anyone believes such nonsense in this day and age is because they've been forced to believe it since childhood by their families or communities, based on where they grew up. If kids were banned from being exposed to any form of religion until adulthood, and were presented with all religious beliefs all at once later in life, and told to choose whichever one they feel is correct, the world would be 99% atheist/agnostic because very few educated, informed adults would randomly think "oh hey, this one implausible story, out of all of these other equally implausible stories, must be true." That's a simple fact. Organized religion is a toxic concept that persists only through brainwashing and, in many cases, fear and violence.
a terrible adaptation, not the fault of the actors. The Director made it totallt sexual when the comedy is when it is not. Also, not many women in Africa from a small village are that race or even have clothes that spotless....fail on every level.
Gosh guys that was great ! And seriously, I don't understand the people saying stuff like "doesn't look like the original characters" or "how can they just do that in highschool". Ok, first off, we don't care. It's just this song, the context doesn't matter. And I mean, for Cunningham not being fat, hum.. Have you seen the shows ? Sometimes, like with Ben Platt, he's not fat...? So yeah, don't care about race or anything. The most important part is that they were amazing. And finally, I think in highschool, you can approve that. There's nothing explicit. Guys in highschool are between 15 and 18 so yeah, it's ok. If it were in middle school, I could have understood but no...
Come on y'all. You can't pretend to be that naive. Yes, there are white people in Africa but this musical is specifically about an indigenous African tribe in Uganda. You wouldn't do a Tennessee Williams play white because there are white people in America.
Pepper Petal That doesn't mean that people can't sing other people's songs. It's not like this is an expensive Broadway rendition. Maybe they live in a town with no good black singers but still wanted to do the song. Stop making everything about skin color.
I know you're so concerned about the racial equity of a high school musical, but this isn't exactly open casting. These are students who auditioned and were given these roles. High schools don't draft for musicals or hold open casting calls!
