If you think it's redundant I'll tell you what the point is, for me at least. Primarily it's so I can use this as a makeshift bellows. Being able to weigh your beans is also handy but my biggest issue is retention. Edit: It also shortens the unit so it may fit in a more convenient place in your kitchen.
One reviewer asked: Is this a solution in search of a problem? I was wondering the same but this video helped me see several benefits: 1) the lid as a dosing cup - eliminating an additional tool; 2) the bellows action - since many already suggest a tap-tap on the top of the clear hopper but that lacks any bellow-like action; 3) the slimmer size/fit for those who regularly do only one cup doses; and 4) the lid is already removed - I've poured beans onto the top of the clear cover before! But two drawbacks are significant: 1) the lack of ability to see whether all the beans are done grinding and 2) the cost is steep for what you're getting. $15 is a more reasonable price point, unless you are on Shark Tank! ;)
Yes-I just use the lid of the regular hopper as my dosing receptacle-it actually ends up with a lower clearance than pulling this thing up and off. Wish I hadn’t bought it.
I've been using my Encore for about eighteen months. I've always used it as a single dose grinder via the clear hopper. Is this new Single Dose Hopper a solution in search of a problem that doesn't exist? As it's not clear it's actually less useful than the stock hopper? Better saving the money to spend on more coffee than buying this?
Yes! I bought this, and it’s definitely a wasteful solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. In fact, the old hopper used LESS space, because I just used the lid to weigh my dose. Now I have to remove an entire 4” high canister. I’m going to return to the old hopper!
Bought the white hopper a while ago for my Baratza. Did not use. By chance a friend gifted me a white Baratza, not knowing that I have one. What luck! I bought a Turkish coffee set up from Turgay’s STC website. The white hopper is ideal for small doses and the coffee beans don’t popcorn as much in it. Now, on one Baratza I do French Press and on the other Baratza I do Turkish coffee.
Thank you so much for doing this video! I was trying to figure out what is the perfect grind size for French press coffee. I appreciate you! Also am very happy with your company, I had my first order recently, and all items came packaged with care!
I still don't get the purpose of this - I have an Encore and just weigh out my beans for my morning coffee pot, add them to the Encore hopper and grind. I don't keep coffee beans in the grinder. So how would this be useful?
Same, I store my beans in a sealed container and add only what I'm going to grind at the time. The reason why I'm looking at getting one is because it can do that puff of air pressure thing (it's possible but difficult to do with the standard hopper lid and my technique will probably damage it long term.) I grind on the fine side and I have retention issues. I also like that I can use the lid to to weigh out my beans.
@@spamcan9208 I use an electric air pump to clean the burrs and the grinder but it’s noisy. Lance Hedrick has a bellows for one of his grinders, I wonder if it would fit the single dose hopper.
@@EUG888 sometimes I'll used a can of compressed air to deliver a few bursts of pressure but even with the hopper lid mostly on it can still get messy. And it's not practical for every time I grind. I'll lose a gram or more sometimes as it clings to the discharge chute. The best use for canned air is when you're doing maintenance and the gear is removed. It also makes me wish I had an air compressor.
You are right to question this. I did get the single dose hopper for my Encore. I measure out and grind 40 -50 grams at a time and don't store beans in the hopper. And I actually find that the stock hopper is easier to use.
Hey, I was considering getting this single dose hopper to help with retention. My Brazza Esp has awful retention. Each time I clean it, my next grind looses around 2-3 grams of coffee that get stuck. Seems this one doesn't help much with the retention issue, huh?
It’s not required at all. It’s convenient to use, if you wanted to use it. I use both hoppers. What would be good if any of the hoppers fit a small bellows to help release the retaining grinds. In that respect the single dose hopper would probably be a good starting point because of its build.
Whut?!?! Why wouldn’t you just use the original part and throw your weighted beans in that thing?! What a redundant thing. It would great if it weighted the beans though
