Barbara Dennerlein & Rhoda Scott on Hammond B3 Organ

Can you handle this much organ? We are used to guitarists like Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, or Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes mixing it up, but Rhoda Scott and Barbara Dennerlein prove that instrumental music isn't just a man's world.
This impromptu performance took place in Switzerland in 2002 at the Bern Jazz Festival, bringing together two legends of the Hammond B3 Organ - the 5 time Downbeat Critics Poll Winner Barbara Dennerlein and the great Soul Jazz artist Rhoda Scott, a.k.a. "Barefoot Lady" - called a very great virtuoso by Arthur Rubinstein.
For Dennerlein fans this is a bit unusual, because Barbara isn't playing pedal bass. This number "Nova" was composed by Rhoda, an accomplished pedal bass player herself, so she provides the bass lines.
Not only are they smoking hot soloists, but check out the great interplay, harmonics, and accompaniment.

The Hammond organ is one of the finest and sweetest instruments every to be fashioned. It will be a long time before anything tops it. Under the control of a master it can be made to do a tremendous lot.

Superlative ladies, just wonderful, only wish I’d have seen more of the shoeless pedal playing, stunning. Also want to congratulate the marvelous drummer who was always just there and just perfectly right, he also added a nice element of mature coolness to the gorgeous ladies! Normally I hate the Hammond but this has really opened my eyes!! BRAVO to you all, Adrian in Bermuda ❤️💕💕💕

This performance just sounds and feels so good. It swings so hard. And I am not sure why the Hammond B3/leslie sound has disappeared so much from music but it needs to come back. So many rock bands in the 60's and 70's used that sound also.

Some have Parkinson's and accidentally hit the down button. Others don't have their glasses on. Some are easily confused and think the down button means they like it. Then you get the teenie bopper Justin Beiber fans who got lost and wound up here. You have some who just want to crank people like you up and thumbs down all the masterpieces they see to draw out your statements of incredulity (they are the ones with no meaning to their lives). Lastly, you get the idiots who can't take the time to appreciate anything but porn.

Been playing guitar all my life in quite a few rock bands. I aways wanted a Hammond in the mix but could never find a player. I guess there to big and heavy for weekly work. But I will say this, nothing can push your overall sound through the roof like a B-3.

Barbara has the nicest chopped B3 I've ever seen. But while these two women have unsurpassed technique, their playing leaves me cold compared with masters of old like Jimmy Smith and Brian Auger. Music should not be reduced to an intellectual competition carried out by competing control freaks. Any blues-based jazz has at some point got to get dirty, low-down, and greasy. Otherwise it quickly becomes a circle jerk.

The B-3 made the Allman Bros. There isn't a sweeter instrument. Wish I still had one. I've been trying to copy that sound for 20 years, close but no cigar. Of course Dickie and Duane had a lot to do with it but I think the B-3 gave it just as much flavor.

For a LONG time, Rhoda Scott, Trudy Pitt and Barbara Dennerlein were the ONLY jazz organists that played entirely foot bass. The Jimmies didn't , nor McDuff or Groove Holmes. Shirley Scott hired bass players. I tried to learn to play it, but did not like the sound of the Hammond pedal tones, they were too brassy. These ladies - until I heard Barbara, I thought it was the "woman's touch," playing lightly and good jazz, but not the raw scream of Johnny "Hammond" Smith with Houston Person on tenor in an after-hours bar in the Combat Zone. Nope. Barbara kicks ass like ANY of my heroes, mentors and friends, but usually 150% better... (Rhoda is great here, too...)
