Honestly the casting of Bill Skarsgard is genius. Since his role as Pennywise you get that eery feel that he's the evil one in this movie and it plays off the fear she feels at first upon meeting him. Made for a great red hearing. I thought he was up to something up until he got murdered. When they found the room I for sure thought he was going to lock her in there. Then the movie goes full apeshit.

Something I find interesting though is he sees women as needing protection and even though it seem like it's coming from a good place it puts him above her as the guardian or guider. He realizes she is fearful at first but ends up trying to teach her there is nothing really to fear. He doesn't really see her fear for him for what it is as she could easily be killed or worse if it had been someone else trying to convince her to stay. When she says there is something dangerous in the house he does not take her seriously enough to just leave and insists he needs to see it for himself. If he saw her as more of an equal he might have listened and allowed them both to escape. It's s huge trope for men not to think women are overreacting in horror films and I really like how the film used a kind character to show you don't have to have bad intentions to harm someone through your own biases.

19:23 What really disturbed me in this movie is the names written on the tapes. They’re labeled after the kidnapped women that are being abused in the videos. But what really gets me is that while there are some first names or occupations (Brenda, Elizabeth, cab driver) there are some that are just so awful and dehumanizing- ‘one breast’, ‘won’t stop crying’, ‘Jane - screamer’. That’s what scares me most about this movie- it’s real. This happens, this kind of person exists AND gets away with it, just like Frank in the movie. It’s probably going on in real life somewhere right now. That’s what scares me- if I ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time, I could be one of those women. Ick. This was one of those movies that really stuck with me.

@r3a1itygamezz14
@r3a1itygamezz14 Год назад
@@childelee2569 I meant, that’s the theme of the movie. I’m a man, not even one that subscribes to most modern feminist motions but this movie was expertly done in showcasing the horrific acts of ignorant men. Notice how the mutant feared the father, it’s because he was raping her and reproducing, she is his child and he had abused her, despite her being stronger than him physically (and mentally) he still had a hold over her likely due to the abuse he placed her through. Keith also had a moment where he played a traditional “good guy” man, he was borderline forcing her to subscribe to his acts because he couldn’t live with the idea of her saying no to him. He wouldn’t accept “no” for an answer throughout the movie, he couldn’t let her stay out in the rain, he couldn’t accept that she would stay on the sofa, he couldn’t accept her first answer for not wanting to drink alcohol yet he kept pushing these things onto her as a guise of being a “good guy”. Even when she freaks out and expresses her issues with the place, he doesn’t believe her, he doesn’t even want her to leave without checking it for himself. Playing into the idea of “women survivors” never being believed when they express genuine issues. Now Keith wasn’t necessarily a bad guy, it’s just the idea of internalised misogyny was portrayed by him. The next males were the two cops and notice how both of these characters didn’t believe her or even give her the time of day when she tried to express her concern, once again playing into the idea of “female victims not being heard”. Finally you have Justin Longs character, the most irredeemable character in the series (after the father), he not only sexually assaulted a woman at the beginning but also seemed to brag about it, he couldn’t accept his losses, he always desired power due to feeling weak which is what most abusers are like, he not only wouldn’t listen to the main girl when she tried to suggest ideas to him (subscribes to the idea that men believe better than women) but the minute he had a weapon (power) he abused it and as a result almost harmed someone innocent. He did try to save her but only for his own good not for hers, as we see by his humble brag later on. As if how a “good guy” expects xyz because he is “nice”. When he sacrifices the girl at the end that once again was a showcase for how he viewed women, as beneath him (hence the throwing off the building). The mutant never believed that, she was willing to die to save the daughters life because of the natural loving nature of women (theme of movie). Notice how even in the flashback the store clerk went out of her way to help the disgusting father because that’s the natural love of a mother. She likely killed Keith because he was a man, a man showing aggression towards a woman - shouting at her in the hopes to get away, the mutant being a product of incestuous rap* and a victim of it too used it’s maternal instincts to protect the other woman it saw. At least that’s how I interpreted the movie.

I figured Frank sort of "lucked out" into the tunnels, maybe bought or inherited the home that happened to be used for some prohibition-era smuggling or maybe even older stuff. Detroit was a pretty big hub in the underground railroad and with the Great Lakes a huge trade hub. I also think Frank wasn't motivated by guilt, he just didn't want to be dragged in front of a court, then prison. I don't expect a sequel but if there was one having it follow up with her story and reaction and the potential of other children (maybe some who went off to other places) would be the plot hooks to follow.

Given that there's at most 4 decades between the flashback and the movie I assumed most of Franks kids intergrated themselves into the town. Children in awful home situations quietly go to school everyday, especially in the 80s and 90s. Those same kids grow up, get jobs and compartmentalize their trauma till they die. So it's possible that most of Frank's kids are living in the area or just in the world. For some reason the booking lady and the cop that didn't talk much gave me the vibes like they knew what was up.
@Anna-zt3jc
@Anna-zt3jc Год назад
that doesn't seem very likely to me. i don't think frank would've allowed any of his kids to leave the home, i mean a single man suddenly producing several children with no birth certificates isn't exactly discrete lol. even after he was old n incapacitated i don't think they could've, given the secret door is presumably only openable from the outside n also alot of them would be severely inbred like the creature so probably couldn't even talk.

One quick note: Tess DID NOT lock her door that first night. I remember that distinctly, as I found it odd. She had been extremely careful all night, but after they opened up, it seemed she let her guard down and forgot to lock it. The switch in the middle was jarring for me and I was confused, but I rode through it. I love how they tied everything together in the end. I believe one of the bigger themes was how men and women navigate the world differently. Tess and Keith even discussed it earlier. As she said, Keith probably wouldn't have given it a second thought, had the roles been switched. Neither AJ,nore Keith, took the disturbing scene seriously, until it was too late. Having to be overly cautious, Tess did. She only went all the way in to help Keith. There is also a theme regarding Frank and AJ. While it was clear that AJ sexually assaulted that woman, he doesn't think he did anything wrong. She just needed "some coercing", which was fine in his mind. The "no's" she uttered were irrelevant. Frank's behavior was clearly more pronounced,, more violent, and clearly wrong, which AJ admonished him for. What AJ did rtealize was that his behavior is also abhorrent, he doesn't see it that way. Even in the end, he had that moment of self-reflection, and that went right down the toilet when the Mother showed up. He made excuses, even blaming Tess after he threw he off the water tower. he was never going to change. While some scenes were a bit goofy (the Mother swan diving off the tower had my whole audience cracking up), there were some good messages and some fantastic twists. It was VERY unexpected and l loved it! I will also praise the trailer, which only involved the first 1/3 of the movie. It got me interested, but there was SO MUCH MORE to it! I'm sad Bill Skarsgard wasn't in it more, but this was fantastic horror movie. There has been a lot of great horror this year, but Barbarian is probably my second favorite, though it's really close to Nope. :-)

@LadiesandgentlemenfooFIGHTERS
Oops i think you missed the nail on the head with this one... There is a lot of subversion in this film relating to the 'damsel in distress' trope, and how all of the unfortunate events that happened to Tess came as a result of saving a man. She got trapped in the basement tunnel after going to help Keith, and after escaping she returns to the house to save AJ. I think one of the major themes from Barbarian is the role of women and mothers as martyrs in society, sacrificing themselves and being subjected to despicable, systematic horrors inflicted upon them--as if it's a curse to be a woman. The only way to challenge this systemic oppression is to fight: become a "barbarian" against it, like Tess and the Mother. (I realize the title most likely refers to the street name Barbary, I just found this connection particularly interesting.)
@CottonCandySharks
@CottonCandySharks Год назад
That's a great analysis! What's interesting too is that we see it as the role of the woman to be empathetic and help, and would judge Tess if she left Aj or Keith, but the guys in this movie sabotaged Tess' survival frequently with the excuse of "I had to do it" and no thought for her safety.

While arguably "creepy," the set up of a double-booked B'nB also feels like the set up for a romantic comedy. The woman and Keith's (I only remember his name because it was said like a hundred times) dialogue also felt like rom com fodder, albeit drawn out with excruciating detail and glacial pace. The movie felt like a rom com turned SpOoKy, before changing to a new movie midway, before combining both movies, while ignoring the vast majority of their prior components. Certain logistics don't add up, so I think the filmmakers were relying more on the metaphor and social commentary, which is almost always frustrating in a "real world" setting.

Confused by the presence of a car and belongings, AJ calls the housing company and they don't offer any help other than telling him no one was booking the rental at the moment. So what happened on the company's end? Were they pulling and hiding a booking scam? Was it negligence? I don't fully understand but I feel like it has something to do with being a rental scam where they hide the real number of bookings and earnings of the house from AJ and/or book the rental on multiple sites with no real booking system or database, thus causing crossover and double bookings.
@KidFresh71
@KidFresh71 Год назад
Yep, good explanation. Or it just could be incompetence/ confusion on the booking agent's end. Mistakes happen. Another subtext was to show that Justin Long's character was such a spoiled douche, he couldn't even be bothered to manage his own property. His negligence led to problems, both on the micro and on the macro levels.
@macafe7160
@macafe7160 Год назад
@@KidFresh71/ No this doesn't make sense bc the guy that owns the house that was kidnapping women was in the basement his self this whole time. So who was keeping it clean and putting it up to rent out? It's to many loose ends for me.
@superlive98
@superlive98 Год назад
@@macafe7160 As stupid as the movie is, they did have the ludicrous explanation that cleaning service only comes by just before a new booking shows up. Do they not go in the basement? There are new rolls of toilet paper down there, so, they must have. Mama only comes out at night? Well, the thick rope coming out of the hole in the wall can't not have drawn attention. The property manager must be in on it. There's no other explanation.
@guywithreallybadchannelnam6184
@@macafe7160 that dude didnt own the house anymore. Pretty sure he stocked up on stuff like a doomsday prepper and hid in the basement and “disappeared”. AJ is the actual current owner of the house, they made it pretty clear he owned it, they mentioned it like 5 times

i just watched this film for the first time earlier today!! i didn’t know anything going into it and I really enjoyed it!! everything was so well placed, i actually enjoyed switching characters and not carrying on with the woman in the basement right away. I also loved seeing Justin Long as this character because I usually love him but he was amazing and I really hated him!! great film, one of my new favorite horror films

The inactivity of the police in this would be quite a bit harder for me to believe if I had never heard of Konerak Sinthasomphone. I think if I was a cop and someone came to me with this story, I'd want to check it out just out of curiosity. I was wondering about skeletons too. It looks like a place that *needs* skeletons. Lol.

I swear Keith must have been written with Trevor in mind just a bit. I went to see the movie because I saw Zack was in the movie , but once I actually was watching it I had a feeling he must have been involved in the writing cause it had the feeling of his sketches how they randomly change course. Also I really want a sequel or some spin off to know what was down the other tunnel . It was hinted that there was something worse than the mother down there.

My friend and I went to c this opening night. What I loved about it is that it knew some of what it was going for made it silly at times, so they just completely embraced it. I will say however that the tension build is so casual u don’t even realize you’re nervous till a jumpscare happens. Overall, it’s many allegories were also a pleasure to witness. Truly one of the first horror movies I rly enjoyed
