HOLY SHIT A WW2 CHANNEL ON THE EASTERN FRONT THAT GOES INTO SPECIFICS. HYPE
@marshalhaynes3007
@marshalhaynes3007 5 лет назад
Speaking of casualties, a wounded Russian soldier was often a dead Russian soldier since medical care for the common infantry man was almost non-existent. A bullet to the head often took the place of a long drawn out surgery. So when counting the number of KIAs keep that in mind.
@davidrodgersNJ
@davidrodgersNJ 5 лет назад
First, thank you for posting this; it is very well done. Hitler was not a fascist, but was a national socialist, and his German Worker's Party viewed communism as a deadly competitor for power, not an ideological opposite. Besides conquering part of Finland and the Baltic states, Stalin helped himself to half of Poland, and Soviet trainloads of coal and other vital raw materials were going from the USSR to Germany as the Nazis conquered Mainland Western Europe and Norway, and bombed London. Stalin was so confident of his deal with Hitler that he was blind to the coming invasion. He had not read in Mein Kampf about Hitler's dream of an Aryan land empire in the East.
@delmozzi
@delmozzi Год назад
Have you ever watched the movie Alexander Nevsky (1938)? Stalin knew exactly what it was coming, he just didn't expect it to come in summer 1941, he was sure to have at least another year to prepare his army for it.
@davidrodgersNJ
@davidrodgersNJ Год назад
@@delmozzi No I never did, but I will now. Thanks. I can't prove it but I think Stalin reasoned that with the British blockading Europe, the Germans didn't have the raw materials for an invasion. Also, given the sparse (and incompatible) rail transport in Russia, the Nazis would not be able sustain their army deep in Russia, or to seize and exploit Russian raw materials before they ran out of their own. My evidence for this idea is that if so, Stalin was correct. Hitler's best military staff agreed.
@delmozzi
@delmozzi Год назад
@@davidrodgersNJ Hilter's goal was to force USSR to surrender, as they did in 1918. Germany already reached the goal in 4 years with only infantry and artillery at that time, now both Hitler and his staff expected to be able to do the same in 4 months with airplanes and armoured divisions. They didn't know the red army was developing medium and heavy tanks, nor that they were able to mobilize so many units in such little time. All the logistic issues you pointed out are correct, but in the end it was the red army to stop the nazis in front of Moscow, not the lack of supplies.
@davidrodgersNJ
@davidrodgersNJ Год назад
@@delmozzi I disagree. Most German vehicles (including armor) were lost to breakdowns (there were no spare parts or facilities to fix them), their infantry didn't have proper winter clothing, etc. Even had they captured the Russian oil fields they had no way to get the oil back to Germany.
@delmozzi
@delmozzi Год назад
@@davidrodgersNJ I think you're mixing 2 different phases of the war. In 1941 the Germans applied the blitzkrieg tactics: they didn't rely on supplies for a long term war, they aimed to defeat the red army and force USSR to surrender as they did with Poland, France, Jugoslavia and Greece. They didn't need the oil fields to do so (they had enough reserves already, in fact they didn't even aim to reach the Caucasus in 1941), they just needed to defeat the red army in battle. But they didn't, they lost just in front of Moscow. Only starting from 1942 they changed their strategy and planned their objectives considering a long-term war. So only in that phase logistics became the main factor, in 1941 it was still firepower and the reason Germans lost in front of Moscow was that the red army was simply stronger there, thanks to the preparation they did in the previous years.

Jack of War: Of the hundreds of posts on this phase of WW2, yours stands out. Your able to outline enough of this titanic human event quickly by knowing where to focus to prepare the viewer to understand the strengths, weaknesses, and miscalculations of the two biggest protagonists in WW2. Thanks, well done, and I'm looking forward to the rest of you series! Before WW2, the British Empire dominated world trade in a loose yet extremely competitive world of "would be" world empires. At the end of the fighting the world's economics was largely divided between stalinism and the market system now dominated (far more uniformly than the British had) by the US.... Barbarossa (more than any other battle of WW2, began to define the geographic shape of these two systems for the exploitation of the planet and it's people. Despite the collapse of Stalinism and the economic rise of India, Japan, and China, much of this shape still persists today, directing our economic and political lives and the lives of our children.

let it be noted that most of those 23,000 tanks were LIGHT TANKS. not the well renowned T-34 of KV tanks. there was only about 1,000 T-34's and KV's combined.

Have seen a discussion that downplays the importance of Stalin's purge. The numbers lost would have happened irregardless of the purge. Untrained fresh Soviet troops were shredded. Lack of resources supplied contributed to this major loss. Which would have happened with or without the purge. This was the thesis.

As a wargamer I've been studying this subject for awhile now and although some of your statements arnt completely accurate, you have done a good job with the maps and numbers. I would suggest that anyone studying history should look to multiple sources to get a better picture of the events, as there will always be discrepancies in accounts. You have provided yet another source of info and for that I thank you.

Great content, however, I would like to point out a few historical inaccuracies or myths that have been perpetuaded about WWII and specifically the Eastern Front and Operation Barbarossa. Hitler did say that the whole structure of the U.S.S.R., was rotten from the inside and that if pushed it would collapse, similarly to what had happened in WWI. However, it was Hitler's high command which was suggesting an invasion of the U.S.S.R., even before the Battle of Britain began. Hitler was doubtful of committing troops against Stalin and opening an Eastern front, in case the Allies would open a Southern or Western front, which they did. Another myth is German troops not being fully provisioned or equipped with winter gear for Operation Barbarossa. Even though Hitler and the high command thought Operation Barbarossa would last from 6-8 weeks, and this initially planned accordingly, the German troops weren't provided with winter gear due to failed operational logistics. Supply routes were cut off constantly, and the deeper the German would go into Russia, the harder it would be to supply the troops in the front, especially due to the lack of infrastructure (highways, roads, etc.) within the Soviet Union around that time. There are great lectures posted on YT, that dispell these myths. I would highly suggest them if you're further interested. One channel I would definitely recommend is TIK.

Why would Hitleres generals support Barbarossa when they themselves sent studies and memorandums saying against it?

You can check out this lecture by Dr. Jonathan House (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zinPbUZUHDE.html). Check around the 8:00 minute mark where he discusses the role of the German High Command in taking the decision of invading the Soviet Union. Regarding Hitler's generals being reticence about invading the Soviet Union, as far as I know , the only ones who expressed their doubts were Heinz Guderian and Walter Model, whilst the rest were enthused, or unopposed, the invasion. If you have any further information about this topic (German High Command and their attitude towards invading the Soviet Union), I would be more than interested to be pointed out on where I could look for this information. Cheers!

Regarding the Soviet tank numbers in 1941...Although 34,000+ tanks sounds impressive, a massive amount of them were light tanks and obsolete tanks.The famous T34 wasn't present in large numbers during the early war, neither were the KV 1's and 2's.The Soviet Armed Forces were in a transitional and re-organization period in the Summer of 1941 ,add to this the enormous expansion of the Red Army and you have one of the , if not THEE main reason for the early German successes.

The maker of this video relied on the conversation between Hitler and Mannerheim in stating that Hitler would not have Russia if he had known the Russians had 35,000 tanks. However, the maker of the video has conveniently omitted the part of the said conversation where Hitler clearly said that he would have attacked anyway, even if he knew of the true tank strength of the Red Army, as "there was no other possibility". Here is the link to the video of the conversation between Hitler and Mannerheim: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ClR9tcpKZec.html

The vast majority of German POWs taken -- excluding those captured at Stalingrad -- survived their captivity. The Stalingrad cohort had a poor survival rate, because the 6th Army had been starving for over 2 months, and various diseases were already rampant before surrender. Please don't make unresearched statements like "very few Germans survived their capture" in your videos.

I heard this passage at 1:08 min again. He spoke about russian POW's and on the other side about german POW's wich are sent to sebirian. These sebirian gulaks (=konzentration camps=kz) are an invention of russia long before the the german death kz. Before the war startet to gulaks were sent political enemies of the ussr to work very under bad conditions until they are dead. My granduncle was captured in kursk and was sent to such a sebirian gulak. On the long march (Todesmarsch) by food a lot of POW's died. The german who are not able to walk anymore were let left in the snow to die. In case of of the possibility the german POW could walk away when the POW group goes futher a russion soldier came and shoot him into his head. The only way to survive was to walk to the gulak, don't getting ill in the gulak and always be able to work and understand what to do when the russian commands came to the POW. At 1955 he came in liberty, was able to talk russian and talked the rest of his life about the war. Can't hear this sad war storys anymore. :-( And yes in these sebirian gulaks only VERY few POW came back. I don't know how it was managed in "normal" russian POW camps.

So despite huge victories Wehrmacht did not achieve even single goal. The nearest to achieve it's goal was army group South, which took Kiev but even they did not reach Volga river as planned. Rather poor vision from the German planners, who came from the nation renown for planning and fulfilling orders of superiors, The year 1942 was even worse, plans to take Russian oil at Caucasus ended up in disaster in Stalingrad.
