Moscow = just a city. No value but propaganda and moral. South had oil,wheat,coal...all the necessity's for German warmachine that was lacking all resources.

Great video about this very little know battle and your graphics help a lot to understand this. Maybe you could update this video using a period map showing the road network & terrain and also talk about what specific what Luftwaffe units were involved as we as a comparison of ALL the tanks involved and talk about the armaments and speeds of them and not just glance over the armor. @06:49-07:10 You show the Soviet 15th Mech Corp arriving and then moving northward off the map and in your summation, you state that it lost 91% of its tanks, so who did they engage with and at what location off map? @09:40 Notice how all of the Soviet tanks are in retreat mode, but all of their turrets are facing rearward.

If Germany had gone into the war with 75mm as a default caliber on their weaponry as Guderian and Hitler wanted, could you imagine the difference?

I suggest that Soviet Union might continue fighting not only after the fall of Moscow, but even if Stalin was not anymore in power. Previous events were of such nature that to stop fighting by Soviet Union was not possible.

How did the German Army suffer comparatively high casualties, with total losses of ~15k, versus Soviet losses of ~416k (the casualty statistics as given in the video)? The ratio of Red Army personnel lost per each individual Axis loss is 28:1. Of the total losses suffered, 97% were Soviet losses and 3% were Axis losses. The German formations involved lost 2% of their personnel, while the Soviet formations lost 60% of their total strength. I can't come up with a way of breaking down the casualty figures which would indicate the comparatively high German losses alluded to in the video...just saying. I do appreciate the visual format of the content, as those less spacially-inclined (such as myself) find it difficult to envision many verbal or written descriptions of geography, troop movements and positions without visual context :)

Well done. Subscribed. Very good stuff. You should play Gates of Hell Ostfront on PC. You could use it to supplement your diagrams/maps/data. It’s also the finest WW2 game ever made.

I am not sure this is the best example. They are both tactical in nature because they are considered on the small time scale. A better example would have been if you zoomed out of the battlefield and showed what the rest of the situation looked like to both sides. For example, despite Billy being able to hold off the army thanks to his tactical retreat it might have not mattered due to the other side having sufficient supply lines and the ability to bypass the castle alltogether. That would be stragetic victory, thereby subdueing the enemy without fighting.

Stalin killed/murdered the officers that would have been in this battle. Stalin therefore caused the defeat of commie/socialists. The failure of the Soviet 15th and 37th divisions doomed the commie/socialists to defeat. The commie/socialists lost useless "toy tanks" much as the US lost mostly useless ships at Pearl Harbor.

You make an interesting comment, paraphrasing 'Operation Barbarossa was doomed to failure. Even if Moscow was taken, the Russians could retreat to the east and the Soviets would keep fighting as long as Stalin was in charge'. The thing is, Stalin had decided to stay in Moscow against the counsel of his advisors, so the taking of Moscow would have resulted in his death or capture. I note that he did evacuate much of the government in mid-October to Kyubishev.

misinformed in some areas clearly you are not up to TikHistory but you are doing alright id say. One of the big mistakes is that the germans count every piece as destroyed even if its repairable. So a lot of tanks could be destroyed and some days later appear as functional and up to the task.

Interesting how the Germans had complete air superiority at the time when the Soviets lost a total of 1700 aircraft. These planes must have put up some sort of a fight, or probably most might have been destroyed on the ground.

10:00 ...You are wrong!... And you repeat the same mistake several times!... Even Soviet era movies... (made after the death of Stalin!...) give a better explanation of what happened to the Soviet Air Force close to the western border of the Soviet Union... For example what happened at BREST...

Please explain why encircling is sth bad at all, and show the routes of supply on your maps. It took me a lot of videos and reading to understand this aspect, that nobody seems to explain somehow. Very different from ancient warfare where commanders were actually trying to let the enemy flee rather than catching them

The primitive mindset of the russians has not changed from the days of the red army and they are still using the numbers game to make up for lack of sophistication and flexibility on battle plans . Right now, the Russians are doing the same in the Ukraine , playing the numbers game and hoping to overcome set backs by sheer weight of numbers, either through human waves attacks or massed artillery fire , not to dissimilar to WWI . The civilian population suffers accordingly . The West no longer carpet bomb or use massed artillery , especially on populated parts . The russians use WWII tactics still . Life has no value . soldiers are used as canon fodder and are expendable . Such is the mindset. The fact they used convicts from maximum security prison is not to dissimilar to the red armies penal battalions . I can see the Ukraine over come the numbers game . I also have a sinking feeling the West may tune down the aid eventually or turn off the tab. If Trumps gets in (god forbid) then all bets of further aid are off the table ! Britain and the EU block will still aid Ukraine but under Trump the America first slogan will turn off its tabs .

14:38 Don't be so sorry for German troops or Soviets. They got what they had asked for when two imperialistic states collectively started total war in September 1939. From the beggining both Germans and Soviets commited atrocities against civilians and soldiers. So no pity for both invaders that showed massive support for their totalitarian rulers. Add timeline and indication of distance to the maps.

I could not support this statement more! BTW: Smolensk has always been a key fortress on the Polish-Russian border. Polish in the sense of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. When we lost Smolensk to Russia in the 17th century, nothing could stop the Russians from advancing further westwards.
