Barbatos is quite an interesting Gundam. It don’t have fancy light sabers that can slice other MS cleanly in two, it doesn’t have huge particle cannons that can obliterate capital ships. It only has metal weapons and traditional firearms. Fighting like a mechanised gladiator, striking down his enemy bit by bit, then end with a lethal blow.
He's actually a barbarian type and is as old as Rx78-02, thats why it is amazing how can a 300 year old scrap from the Calamity war annihilates this modern and specialized suits equipped with lasers and etc.
@@kayievictoria1985 cus mobile suits in this era are practically immune to beam weapons, so physical barbaric weapons is all that works against them effectively.
@kayie victoria Hashmal and other mobile armors in this universe were made before barbatos and the other gundams though. Gundams were actually specifically made to counter the mobile armors and their beam weaponries.
The Barbatos is by far my favorite mobile suit. Not just the design and how badass Mika pilots it. But the sound aesthetic. The exhaust vents howl like a wolf and the steal cable when he gets the tail added scraping on itself as it shoots out and retracts sounding like the laugh of an imp on Barbatos' shoulder.
for real tho, the tail is probably the best sound in the entire franchise, never noticed it sounded like a laugh. Good attention to detail. And when barbatos flung that tail left and right i couldnt keep myself from smiling cuz it sounds sooo good!
Its creation was meant to be a mix of silluette inspired by a metal gear rex, its details within the design and relation to the gundams, a mirror to the Evangelion and its angels. Finally the beam was meant to invoke Godzillas charging its own beam and desctructive capability.
It’s funny you say evangelion because whenever I watch this plot of the show, I always get reminded of evangelion, I guess that sound must have been why
The Gundam frame essentially was the last resort, you had in essence Skynet with access to machines that would never cease to work, that could disrupt long range communitcations, guided weaponry and to which energy based weaponry was practically useless. Add to this, it moving faster than bullet time, its one directive being to destroy all humans, having a laser weapon that can destroy hundreds of kilometers from a surface in less than a second with a small beam shot. Its made of the stronget alloy there is, it can create materials, weaponry and even reverse engineer that of other units. It can create armies of plumas which will provide it any minerals it needs, if that wasnt enough it can repair itself with nanomachines or sacrifice the plumas in combat repair in the middle of combat. All of this means that besides working around aall the things it nullifies, you need to keep up with speed, reaction time, strenght and durability. All while not relying in an AI only system that might also turn against you. I the shortest amount of time possible, thats why the design of these beasts was how it was. Include the need for all ground units to also be able to do flight and there you go why these "ground units" can fly.
@@ParagonGoetia Wait, Barbatos can do all of those things? The use of nanomachines and all these over-the-top features sounds more like the Turn-A to me.
@@kerbodynamicx472 AV is based on bio engeneering tech. The implants are drilled and the nanomachines spread on the body of the person once inserted. The nanomachines used for reconstruction are mostly used by the MA and not the MS.
They named all the Gundam frames in this setting after demons _because_ they saw their creation as a necessary evil to stop the mobile armors. It wasn't just "hey wouldn't it be edgy if" but out of solemn recognition that they were creating monsters to sacrifice pilots to in a devil's bargain. They weren't that crazy. They were that _desperate!_ In a way, that's even more chilling.
I love this moment. It was the defining moment of this series. All power comes at a cost. Mika was willing to sacrifice all for the power to protect his family. However McGillis only focused on the power. He never realized sacrifice. He was cold and calculated. He understood loss and risk but not sacrifice. This made their alliance ill-fated and sealed their fate.
He made others sacrifice, and in the end, those people who were scarred by the sacrifices came for him. McGillis too, was one of those orphans, he just didn't appear to be one, but inside, he was as broken as any of them. He probably felt more at home with Tekkadan than any other time. And Tekkadan was doomed the moment their soul, Biscuit, died on Earth. They were going into that death spiral, even as others tried to stop them - going towards a goal they didn't even really understand nor wanted. That's what the ending was about - don't make people like this, because violence begets violence in exactly this manner.
Tbh for me it looks more like he is losing his brain cells on the last war against rustal elion. Tbh the more fitting words for his character is that he is a lunuatic person that is somehow educated / looks sane enough in normal people eyes so much that they don't notice it until the "last moments"
i had a big "oooohhh" moment after the edmonton arc when i realized that mika was literally making a deal with the devil "barbatos" giving his humanity in exchange for power
McGillis couldn’t sacrifice anything cause he had nothing to sacrifice. He lived no one and nothing, all that mattered was his ambition and desire for power.
@@williamhanna9718 I don't believe he loved no one and nothing. His concept of love was warped and twisted to believe ambition and power WAS love. His molester father raised him as a throwaway puppet. In public he put on a show of caring but in private viewed him as disposable trash. Power, status, manipulation, domination over others was all he knew. And how he tragically doomed all who allied with him.
One of my favorite aspects of Iron Blooded Orphans is that as they defeat foes they scavenge and take useful components from the battlefield. Seeing Barbatos get upgraded with scavenged components as the series goes on is one of my favorite parts of the series.

I love how the Barbatos almost has a mind of its own and it just craves destruction and combat. Mika is the perfect pilot for this Gundam because they have the same personality.
All of the gundam frames are somewhat sentient due to them reacting to the pilots "request" either giving the pilots more power at the sacrifice of a body part or the simple eye glow.
@@eggbro693 yeah, Gundam Hajiroboshi in the IBO Urdr Hunt resets itself to it's original OS Gundam Marchosias, locks the pilot out of the controls and bypass it's own limiter when they met one of the MAs, they definitely have some degree of sentience
Mobile Armors are supposed to be portrayed like this even in older series, power output and ability wise. Although minus the primal wildness of course.
@@AangDknight It is documented that he was the only other one capable one of battling a Mobile Armor 1v1. He used Bael as a Brawler mainly, just like Mikazuki uses Barbatos here.
@@ParagonGoetia Exactly, he can defeat a MA with 2 normal sized swords while Mika can barely doing so at the cost of his body and with the help of a large sword
One of the greatest scenes in Gundam history. Mikazuki is an homage to the downtrodden. He rose up to take on what was keeping he and his family down, and he was willing to give his life for that change. That boy’s unfailing resolve made him damn near unstoppable.
Hashmal’s beam weapon sounds are haunting, and it’s wild until they noted it I never noticed that there weren’t any energy weapons in IBO until it appeared
This is easily one of the most intense Gundam fights I've ever seen, and I was honestly kind of terrified of it. There was so much going on at once between Mika and the Mobile Armor. The speed, reaction times, the close calls. I had a hard time keeping up with what was going on. And that was just *one* Mobile Armor. I can't imagine what it was like during the Calamity War three hundred years ago. Fighting one that's been asleep for hundreds of years was bad enough. Fighting two or more must've been a death sentence, or worse if that's even possible.
Curious facts: Gundams would normally be dispatched as groups composed of only them or a mix of them and Valkyria frames plus the use of Dainselfs. The idea of a Gundam 1v1 a Mobile Armor is something probably only agnika could've done since he used Bael as a brawler just like Mika, giving more reason as to why they recieve the name Rex after the battle as they stand above the other Gundams and their pilots.
All I can say at this point; where was he when we needed to kill the Apsalus? Or even the Neo Zeong? That would have made those fights SO much easier.....
Mika was an emotionally stunted kid. He certainly had emotion, but didn't know how to express them. He's so emotionally repressed growing up that his default expression was that------
I think basically everyone thought that the rest of the show beyond this point was going to be about that but they kinda pulled the rug out from that lol
Jeez, whomever invented Gundams that utilized that Alaya Vajrana system is nuts. Using humans as literal batteries to power these destructive suits and turning them into paraplegics. This series and Witch from Mercury had the right amount of gritty storytelling, in my opinion.
We totally need a Calamity War series. Seriously, I've been asking to my self, who created this monstrous Mobile Armors, why is it programmed to kill humans how did they make the Alaya-Vijnana System, and the Gundam Frames. Also want to know who Agnika Kaieru is.
The Alaya Vinjana that mikazuki and others use is just a leaked and imperfect copy of the alaya vinjana from the black market. the alaya that they used 300 years ago is perfect where pilots didn't suffer any brain damage even if they used all of the gundams potential. all info's about how to create technologies that they used 300 years ago including the alaya vinjana, mobile armors and gundams was hidden by gallarhorn which led to the devolution of technology in the post disaster era. The Earth Sphere and Outer Sphere originally used Mobile Armors to wage war against each other during the Calamity War. The idea of Seeing Mobile Armors fight against each other in a movie or OVA is insane.
There was a small bit in this fight that showed something most folks probably never noticed: The reason for Barbatos' original giant mace. Mika has changed the weapons Barbatos used to lighter weapons, for dealing with other Mobile Suits, and learning how to fight them more effectively, which he finally masters at the end of season 1, but those weapons are pretty much useless against the heavily armoured Mobile Armours - even if you can hit them easier, it doesn't help much against that thick nano-laminate armour. When Mika picked up the big sword to use, he noted that "Ah, this is perfect. I can kill it with this," because that's the sort of weapon you need to destroy the monstrous MA: heavy and durable melee weapons that can pierce and crush the armour. The heavy mace can easily batter the MA, and then the finishing blow will come from the piercing power of the hidden pile bunker.
Correct. Most of the original Gundam frame weapons are thick and durable. We saw Barbatos's mace, Kimaris's lance, Gusion's hammer, Astaroth's hammer, Marchosias's Mace, Gremory's anchor, Asmodeus's Tonfa and Dantalion's Bayonet. But there's also a special case where mobility is more preferred, this is where Bael's sword and Astaroth's katana come in. In Astaroth's case it has Nanolaminate technology, meaning it made the weapon far sharper in theory. Bael on the other hand is different. It focuses more on the material's durability rather than technology. It is said that Agnika Kaieru was so skilled in piloting Bael that he only need those swords to deal with a Mobile Armor.
@@emanuelcr7207 Right, but there's a reason as to why I didn't include it. As you know MA already dangerous as it is but what makes them even deadlier is that their AI is evolving, they're learning. The more they encounter a MS, the smarter they are. Once they encounter a long range type, they will come up with a strategy to counter it such as sending the little Plumas to either distracting the MS or using them to as shields. This is how they're able to wipe a quarter of humanity's population. What probably happens to Flauros was in desperate attempt to defeat the MA the pilot decides to drag Hashmal from outer space into Mars and slam it onto the surface, thus deactivates the AI from activation and in the process of doing so both MS and MA makes a huge crater on impact and as time went on gets buried overtime until Tekkadan found them.
@@AangDknight Unless it turns out that Bael's dual swords were not its original weapons. Remember, the Legend of Bael was warped quite a bit purely to fit gjallarhorn's political needs.
Holy shoot, the whistling pitch with malevolent eyes just implies how much a monster Mika is piloting Barbatos, which is already monstrous enough as it is. This type of robot action on par with Monster Hunter action with our current 2022 technology is nearly impossible, and Mika being nonchalant with blood literally tearing from his eyes was the best thing after the OST and story this anime has XD
You could say the suit is the monster. The gundams are literally named after demons. Barbatos is the 8th spirit named among the list of 72 demons in The Lesser Key of Solomon. According to grimoire tradition, he holds the rank of Duke, and may appear when the sun is in the sign of Sagittarius. When summoned, he appears "with four noble kings and their companions in great troops"
Small note: Barbatos got talked in the Eye and Arm that Mika ended up losing. Mika just straight up didn't care at the time, he probably knew in the back of his mind that he was irreparably broken but kept going.
I would love to see something on the calamity war mentioned throughout IBO either as a movie or a ova miniseries it's often described as a near apocalyptic war with hundreds of mobile armors just like the Hashmal with humanity only able to defend themselves thanks to the Gundams which can only defeat the mobile armors by crippling or even killing their pilots it could easily turn out as one of the darkest entries for the series.
Urdur Hunt is teasing Gundam Marchosias during the calamity war fighting a mobile armor. Marchosias in the present is called Hajiroboshi, though from the small glimpses we've had, its pilot challenged a mobile armor 1 to 1, just like Mikazuki while wearing a red cloth. It has also been shownin PVs releasing its limiter, showing the iconic red eyes.
@@cumarcilmi2787 The Alaya Vinjana that mikazuki and others use is just a leaked and imperfect copy from the black market. the alaya that they used 300 years ago is perfect where pilots didn't suffer any brain damage even if they remove the gundams limiter. all info's about how to create technologies that they used 300 years ago including the alaya vinjana, mobile armors and gundams was hidden by gallarhorn which led to the devolution of technology in the post disaster era. It’s terrifying to think that only one mobile armor was this fucking strong, it makes you wonder how the fuck did the 72 Gundam frames take out the hundreds or maybe even thousands of these damn things during the Calamity War. Sunrise we need a prequel please!
Here’s what I’m wondering: Just how damn tough were the original Gundam pilots during the Calamity War? Presumably they were taking on fully-functional Mobile Armors on the regular, and if using Barbatos’ power to kill just one did this to Mika, how did those pilots survive repeated fights of this degree? Or did they not survive, and were just replaced like a damaged component after every kill? Perhaps they were just permanently strapped into their Gundams to allow them to at least move.
There were groups of Gundam frames and valkiryas deployed as units to take down a single mobile armor. The only other individual we've heard of 1v1 a mobile armor was Agnika Kaeru, who use Bael like a brawler just like Mikazuki does here. In conclusion the limiter wasnt released that often, one coukd dial it down though, as shown by Mika in the SRW 30 DLC.
@@FALUKYOURMOM This is incorrect, to further emphazise this the Udrur Hunt story will showcase the prize pilots had to pay for also realising it back then. Specifically we will get to see the pilot of Marchosias back then.
“I can’t see their movements.” The moment this was said I realized that this fight became more anime than any of the believable, semi-realistic skirmishes beforehand. A kid in a mech was moving *too fast for trained adult pilots to comprehend.* That’s some DBZ shit. I love that detail.
To be fair, that kid likely has a battle record far more extensive than anything Juliet has achieved working for Galljhorn. Being a Human Debris he for sure was sent on way more suicidal missions with far less gear and still achieved victory and survived. Many of Galljhorn's top aces would be hard pressed to survive the life the life a human debris had let alone make it to adult hood. That's before we take into consideration the Whiskers operation that only children had a high success rate of surviving and still only had a 50/50 shot.
@@RazielTheUnborn mikazuki wasn’t human debris just a child solider. Akihiro and his crew (basically the tekkadan members with a red strip on their jackets) were the actual human debris.
I honestly would've preferred the rest of the show to have been fighting these things instead of the civil war thing that came next. I still liked the civil war to a degree, but this was just so much cooler and fun to watch for me.
Barbatos is definitely a double edge sword gundam, imagine if Mika use barbatos without Alaya-Vijnana System but still acts as one with the gundam, he would be a demon on a different level
Eeeeeeh, the Alaya-Vijnana sysem is not a crutch. The reason he is one of the only people to even have one is because (asides from being a illegal operation by the government standards), the Alaya-Vijnana system has a HIGH mortality rate but the reward for surviving such a "event" is advanced control over mobile suits due to having a direct link to said Gundams, issue is that because of built in safeties it also makes it so that the user cannot over-exert themselves, such as taking on foes the system declares to dangerous to fight such as MAs. With safeties turned off the user can operate a mobile suit with 100% effectiveness, however over-exerting both you and the mobile suit will lead to personal physical damage, part of why even when not taking direct damage to himself he will still get bloody in his own suit, especially his eyes as information is overloading his brain. He would actually be less effective without the Alaya-Vijnana system and without it would not even be able to pilot Barbatos which REQUIRES the user to essentially have the system installed in order to operate properly.
@@funkmantim2661 Now imagine that with somekind of a dampener / supporter or a AV Type-E situation like the Vidar had. Would it make both Barbs and Mika more effective and give the whole demon naming thing and "I'll surrender my body to you in exchange for all the power" a little better of a meaning instead of just losing limb and body sensations?
@@funkmantim2661 while you are right, Mika had 3 A-V, and Akihiro had 2. Both were brutes, but only Mika got to the point where he COULD do more. One is just fine for mobile workers and mobile suits, and they could pilot even Gundams, but yeah. Mika turned the safety off, but he handled a Gundam way better than any MSG protag. Heck he even "heard" Barbatos.
Let not forget that those safeties that Barbatos has Mika needed some of them turn off in the beginning. Remember when some else tried to pilot barbatos it damn near killed them just trying to turn it on.
Nanolaminate Armor boasts high defense against Beam weapons by dispersing the beam energy reducing the damage done. The nanolaminate armor is also effective against physical projectiles. As a result, ranged firearms are unable to score decisive hits against them and may only shave off small pieces of it unless at close range. Because of its strength and widespread usage, anti-mobile suit weapons are usually in the form of physical melee weapons as they are best at dealing damage to the armor.
But whait didnt that mibile armor survive since it fought agains hajiroboshi the rebuild version lf marchosias cus when the mobile armor scanned or saw hajiroboshi it got the flasback idk im confused a little about that scene in urdr hunt

True that he's strong and brute, but there was a debate if he's the best pilot. Comparing Mika to Amuro and Kira as a character he might be the strongest if it's a head to head combat, but he's not as sharp nor as strategic as them. Maybe it's due to his inexperience. Unlike Amuro and Kira, Mika doesn't have some kind of training, but he's still as talented as them if given more chances.

Funny thing is what we see in the show is something akin to Mad Max for them.
