one like doesnt seem enough for this video, should be allowed more. A lovely, moving, video that shows everything that is so magical about fishing. Lost fish, big fish and memories that will last a lifetime of time spent on the bank with your dad. Very well done mark and great to see your dad showing you how its done at the end ;-)

Thanks Danny, your words are very kind mate, the trips had a little bit of everything, all those components which us anglers enjoy, or keep us coming back to our hobby. He certainly did mate, I'll let him know what you said, I think he will be pretty chuffed.

Great film as usual Mark. I go fishing with my son all of the time. We are very close friends as well as father and son and I love spending time with him. Your video's are by far the best on UTube, that's why we all keep coming back for more. Please don't feel embarrassed about being concerned about your dad Mark, showing how much you love him is something to be admired. Men can and do cry pal. Give my best regards to your father pal. God bless

Thank you Miff, it so heartening to know you all enjoyed the video, dad will be happy to know that, especially as given that he is not used to being on film that much. Thank you for the kind words regarding my channel, but you chaps and ladies also make up very much of what is a good community of people who genuinely enjoy the videos and whom I feel lucky to have.

Thank you so much, I will be sure to pass on your compliments to my father (Robert), I felt it was the right thing to do to leave that particular section in the video, after all as you say, you shouldn't apologise for caring.

I’m just about to rekindle my love of river fishing and hopefully catch a Barbel or two. It’s been some 20 plus year’s since I last fished the Severn. Sadly I don’t really have an excuse as I only live about 30 minutes away. Like you I love to fish with my Dad but he has no interest in river fishing preferring to sit by a pond with very little walking. It’s lovely to see you and your Father sharing your love of river fishing. I’m really looking forward to the new season and maybe coaxing my daughter to the bank side. Keep up the honest videos, once I’ve finished watching this one I’m going to check out some of your others. Tight lines :)

Georg, I think you're right, these memories will last a long time, something to hold fondly. I believe Robert was very happy with the trip, it was nice to just be able to share in that happiness and regarding the camera he was slowly but surely warming to it, which I was very proud of as he isn't the kind of person whom really likes being on video that much, which is something that I also respect and understand. Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Hi Mark. I still cry every day for the loss of my sister and brother. sister 48 years old, died in 2012 and brother 39 years old, died in 2013. but I also see the beautiful things in life. and so enjoy your adventures on the waterfront. In other words. bless every day that you can bring with your family. And I hope to see many uploads from you.

HI Mark. Yet another absolutely fantastic video. I was completely bowled over by your dedication and the compassion you show towards your father. He must be very proud of you....Your emotion sparked something in me. Reminded me that if was my old man that got me into fishing in the first place. We all get so obsessed with the size of the fish we catch but the reality is there is SO much more to fishing than just catching fish; sometimes it's not fishing but spending time with someone important in our lives. Keep catching those big bombers and stripey sargents! Phill

Hello there Adrian, long time since we have spoken, I trust all is well with yourself and family? Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed the video, it was actually very hard for me to watch that section back as it brought the same feelings back to life again, sometimes you worry if showing your emotional side on youtube is wise, as it can at times open you up to trolls and people who perhaps think showing emotion is a sign of weakness, but if I had not left it in the video then it really would have not been me portraying myself as such.

@francolinobasco 7 лет назад
Thank you, it was one of the most pleasurable to edit and at the same time difficult with that particular emotional chapter included, but that is how much dad means to me. There was something that really hit home that particular evening as he didn't look well, but I think out of dignity and worrying that he would perhaps feel he was disappointing me he did not wish to tell me straight away that he could not make it down to the river. He was quite unhappy and very tetchy prior to doing so and my sadness and feeling for him spilt out on the video, but I know it was right that I left that segment in, as I really do feel some of us guys bottle things up too often some times.

Thanks Tee, you're very welcome mate, always enjoy trying to help, I guarantee you that you won't look back with regards to the bird seed, I know I never have. It's good to hear your father still joins you on trips on the river and you're right you do need to be careful on those slippery banks, just as such an example the evening I fished alone I somehow managed to slip and land flat on my face haha, no damage apart from feeling a prize fool.
@teec3385

I've gone over a few times in the past myself :( do you ever use a bait dropper just with the bird seed alone or mainly always in a groundbait mix ? Your success speaks for itself with ground bait mixed with seed. Terry
@francolinobasco

I use both mate, dropper or as a groundbait mix,whatever I prefer at the time and on the small rivers sometimes just loose seed fed by hand or catapult.

Mark I only recently found your channel, and can say I have really been hooked! I mainly fish for Carp, however not a ready made carper that so many are today that would not recognise half of the fish that swim in our waters. I started fishing many moons ago for all species, your channel has reminded me of small river fishing with my dad, brought back many memories, I found this video a cracking watch and also a very emotional one. Keep up the videos coming please, and I wish you and your dad sessional greetings and tight lines. Right I am off to dust off the light leger rod and make up some garlic cheese paste ;-)

Hello there Dazzle, thank you for stopping by to watch and take time to post a comment, always very much appreciated and thank you so much, I'm really glad you are enjoying the content on my channel. We owe our fathers a lot for sharing their hobby with us, as it is a permanent gift and one that never stops giving. I did become rather emotional and I was going to edit that moment out of the video but felt it was better left in to show how I truly felt. I will keep the videos coming as and when possible and I'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a fruitful trip on the light leger tackle and cheese paste.

@francolinobasco
@francolinobasco 7 лет назад
Thank you Mark, it's really good to know that you enjoyed the video and you're very right about grabbing trips together, life is short and time goes by a bit too fast. Regarding what you suggest about the Severn running true to form feeding mainly at night, I don't really feel that was the case. We fished five sessions together during our stay, of those five sessions three were evening trips, usually commencing from 6/7pm, so fish would be caught predominantly at night as there indeed could be no other outcome. However the two trips where we did fish in daylight and one of those also being sunny conditions, fish were caught on both occasions. It was just how we felt we would mainly fish the river, take our time ambling down for evenings into darkness, but I do feel if we had fished those other days on a daylight till evening basis it would have gone well. I hope this reply is not coming across as if an ego is talking or an attempt by myself to be brash,as humility is of the essence in being able to keep learning. However I think it helped that both Robert and I have cut our teeth on lower stocked waterways in our home county.
@MarkCarp
@MarkCarp 7 лет назад
different people have different experiences mark, i see nothing ego driven in your reply, you caught day and night and you were confident you could get them at any time, that's the experience of cutting your teeth on lower stocked venues, i would imagine the severn would be easy fishing for both of you 👍 I've had my fair share of daylight fish from the river but there are times when i can't buy a bite until the sun dips behind the trees and the light levels fade, specially early in the season.

Am 65 packed in fishing 20 yrs ago after losing sight in one eye in an accident , I was a regular on the open match scene back then. But now my grandsons are really into fishing so have spent a fortune and am back into it. It makes my day to know that I am connecting with people who share a similar ethos as myself and that we can spend time communicating via the comments section because of sharing similar interests and emotional connections, all very much part and parcel of our hobby and more so the ups and downs of life itself. I'm sorry to hear that you don't get much time to spend fishing with your father, despite living under the same roof I can honestly say that my father and I had drifted apart, albeit a small amount, it was noticeable over the last few years.

Thank you Dave, happy to hear you enjoyed it. It was brilliant to see my dad get a few, as you could hear on the video I was getting a bit perturbed when I was playing that 5 pounder and stated "I'd much rather you took these" thankfully the fish picked up on the script a bit. It was emotional, I don't think I have felt as overwhelmed as I did at that moment in the video and as I edited the video before uploading I found it very hard to watch back, the rawness of it and wondering if I might be berated a bit as sometimes youtube can be a bit harsh on people and admittedly whilst I have grown a very thick skin over the years on here, I don't think I would take it very well if someone decided to be a jerk regarding my father as such. Thankfully I am very lucky to have some brilliant people such as all of you who come and spend time to watch my videos, share a comment and a chat with me via this section and I could not ask, nor want for any more than that.

I must admit I did have a few messages on social media with people suggesting that I should not have left the scene with me crying in, as someone did use the term "it made you look a snowflake". But it was right to be left in as just because we are men does not mean we don't have emotions, we should cry, it shows we are human.

Hello there Craig! How are you doing mate, thank you so much, it was nice to finally be able to make a video with him of us fishing together, they were immaculate fish and given that flow fighting fit, didn't know when to stop scrapping, the rods and reels are the exact same ones you see on my tench video, the "pelzer contacts" nice through action to them but certainly not a rod that has a "barbel" label to it, yet they peform well as a jack of all trades type rod, on a larger river or lakes for my tenching. Reels were Shimano oceanic 4000s. The ground bait if you search on the Decathlon site for "grilled hemp" you'll find it. Oddly the website does not include peanut in the product listing which is a bit silly given that someone with a nut allergy could purchase it, but I can fully confirm as per my video that it does indeed contain peanut, as the ingredients label states it on the packaging.

A nice long video had to watch it in two sessions but I made sure I did! great to see you on the Severn with your father aswell, getting him out there to enjoy the bend in the rod fantastic for him and for yourself, as you said nothing wrong with guys crying I think all us guys let our emotions build and build up inside and over time it all comes flowing out, but you always feel better after a cry, some absolute cracking barbell I will visit the Severn myself one day it is such a wide flowing river full of features, you both done ever so well with your battles against not just the fishes power and the flow of the river but the rocks rubbing your lines, those barbell are a fine species one I'm still holding in my thoughts to go out and get, I'm tempted to go again soon haven't been able to as been in right difficulties as of late due to my unfair dismissal from work but I got a plan up my sleeve things are looking up, I loved that bird seed ground bait you made up, I'm lucky I have a g&m growers farm shop and they sell ground bait and plenty of different variety's of birdseed, you demonstrating it made me really want to get onto using it, strangely enough I never thought of baiting up less, I knew the fishes metabolism slowed down in winter but I always assumed they needed to feed to keep strong, but I can see it makes them more kind of layed back so ill be offering little amounts and knowing my hook bait will be very appealing next session, watching everyone fish makes me really want to go but I'm being patient my time will come again, but I'm determined even if I pop out with very light tackle and a bit of bread It can make for a great session, well as for those 2 lads dropping that barbell dragging it up the bank and having no landing mat its beyond me how people just don't care about the fish they catch, fish care is vital in what we do that the fish is cared for and returns safely unharmed, this is exactly why I say tight lines and wet nets, loved this video so thank you Mark :)

Thanks Graham, it is always good to hear from you and I hoped you might enjoy the video mate, admittedly it is probably the longest video I have created, but I did not want to disjoint it as such and it is really brilliant to know how much you enjoyed the video and also the longer format. You're right we do keep our emotions and feelings too concealed at times and much like a saucepan of milk left on the hob, eventually it boils over. Thanks regarding the barbel, they certainly were fighting fit and the river is as you say stacked with features, it was a joy to be able to fish it. That said it was great to log in to facebook this morning and see that you had received a barbel stocking on your section of river, hopefully some of those will grow on and become very special Ouse creatures, just waiting to put a large twitch into an anglers rod. I wholeheartedly recommend the bird seed as you know. Believe me I was in shock when I saw them holding the barbel standing and then proceed to drop it, I was incensed, surely common sense dictates that you don't stand up holding a fish for a trophy shot.

Mark Erdwin - yes sir, there are some good Carp fishing rivers and lakes here in the U. S., and few places that have some really big Carp in them too, like Dale Hollow lake down on the Ky. & Tennessee border! There have actually been several of the UK people who have came over here, and still come every year, to fish Dale Hollow and they’ve caught some huge Carp from there! I think Carl & Alex have been there too!

Hensley’s Hobbies : Steve Briggs, a legend in his own lunchbox, has done a great video too of Dale Hollow..... beautiful fully-scaled mirrors there. The US is the untapped monster of carp fishing. I'm sure many many Americans would love carp fishing if they could rid themselves of their hate for carp, the Asian carp that are such a problem in The Illinois river etc are a different species. The King carp species are no threat to any waterways like the Asian carp. John Wilson and Chris Tarrant done a video of carp fishing in Arkansas , beautiful,beautiful lake. What a country !!

Glad you got some quality time with your dad, never got to fish with my dad as we lost him when I was 11. Well done on tackling the bad fish handling, something that winds me up as well, I don't hold my fish up now, I have a tape measure sewn onto my mat and just rest the fish on that-usually still in the net, quick photo and back in the water to rest up before release, another thing that winds me up is the habit of holding perch by the mouth- a stupid habit imported from American "anglers" who are too scared to handle the fish they catch. Good presentation on your groundbait prep and the nutrition content for times of year.
