Fifty years ago my high school choir performed this piece, in English, at a nearby church. Our performance was absolutely perfect. Unfortunately, we never recorded this song. @Elijah Music helps me too. Music like this comes from God. His spirit inspires music like this which is why it has a special affect on us. It lifts up the soul and mind to go beyond our earthly realm and into the divine. "Agnus Dei" means "Lamb of God" which refers to Jesus Christ. I too was feeling depressed about things and this music brought my mind back to God and I felt hopeful again today. Each person has a body and an eternal soul. Our soul will live on and if we try to live good lives, we can spend our eternity in Heaven with God after we die. In the meantime, we have to make an effort to use our talents/skills to help others and do the task for which God sent us to earth. Take care my friend!

You know, I do too, except for one thing. In the instrumental arrangement, my favorite part is where the whole ensemble moves higher and higher to the climax. Essentially, the "bottom falls out," with the lower instruments playing in their highest registers, and the whole group soars higher and higher to the pinnacle. Due to the limitations of human voices, I'm assuming, the build to the highest peak is not replicated in the choral arrangements. Basically the highest part ends up a repeat of the prior phrase in the same register. I'm a violinist, not an arranger, but if that section could br rearranged to more closely follow the rising of the entire tonality, soaring ever higher to the peak through both phrases, Tony ear, it would be perfect. All that said, I do adore listening to this in vocal form, and find it even more moving in some ways than the string quartet and orchestral arrangements.

My favorite part.. From 0:00 to 8:17 .. The fact that just the human voice in collaboration is able to bring out such emotion and in pure fluidity, make this a go to clip for me to visit constantly. IMHO the best piece of music ever written.

When the world is broken, and the stars no longer align. All that is pure in this world, is destroyed. This song comes into play, to remind us that we should have done right by our kin.

Only music can touch so closely the mystery of the world, and it all came from the brain of one man, well, one big genius, Mister Samuel Barber...

Not possible to fully accept that. The Adagio came 33 years before the Agnus Dei version. About the number of years that Jesus lived among our blessed predecessors. Of course, Barber like many great artists had genius. But the raising of that genius to transcending levels is the work of the Holy Spirit. In His striving to make us better Disciples - His core mission - the Holy Spirit helps soe of us reach higher and others of us to see more of the effects of that. How wonderful is that? And how grateful I am that it is so!

In this horrible pandemic period around the world that we all cross, this divine music brings a little peace to the soul. We can only kneel down to thank the Lord for allowing those we love to be still alive.

This really shows how complex and layered the piece is...I don't want to even think how many rehearsals this took.
