Fun fact about Ryan's role in the film: originally, he declined the role because he didn't really feel like Ken had much of a part in the movie. But then he went home and saw his daughters playing with Barbies in the yard, and noticed they'd basically tossed Ken aside. He saw Ken face-down in the dirt next to a discarded lemon rind, realized that Ken being discarded and unloved *was* the character's motivation, and immediately texted Greta Gerwig to accept the role, because "Ken's story needs to be told!" 😂

The thing with the so-called controversy, is that the people were offended with the idea of what they thought the Barbie movie was going to be, not what it actually was. Anyone who comes out of this thinking it was saying women are better, men are bad etc. clearly didn't pay attention. And regarding "Sublime!", I believe they did a bunch of takes and Gosling would shout something different, so it wasn't in the script per se.

I’m a single dad with two daughters, one of whom is 17, and this movie and the themes about patriarchy, being enough, and especially parenting destroyed me. I really like how it showed that the Kens struggled just as much after patriarchy was brought in. Their lives still revolved around Barbies reaction to them and their jealousy of each other. Toxic Masculinity never helped them. I think a part a lot of people have been missing is the actual best Ken/role model for men is Allan. Margot Robbie really just killed it in this role. The facial expression work is incredible. She tells a story with every slight face change. As much as the dialogue is really well written and executed, there's so much storytelling that she is able to do non-verbally and it's wonderful.

Anybody notice that Margot's really not doing the superstar/producer thing the way anybody else in her position does it? She clearly had Greta's back with the studio and gave her room to do her thing, which is basically the bare minimum job requirement but in addition to that she obviously had no problem playing 'straight man' to Ryan Gosling, who was encouraged to go nuts and try crazy stuff at every opportunity by Greta. She also let another actress deliver the kick-ass, movie-defining speech that everyone remembers. In the history of movie stars, that's VERY unusual. Anybody else I can think of who might have made this movie would surely have exercised her clout as star/producer and snagged that speech for herself, and fair enough - a movie star's job is to do awesome things on screen and look good doing them. Margot Robbie must be protected at all costs. 🥰

I think it's very telling when someone sees a movie that's so clearly promoting equality, and then they see it as a threat that hates them. If a man thinks "men and women should have equal rights" is the same as "men are terrible and women should rule over them", it really speaks to how they see women overall.

The "pregnant Midge" controversy wasn't about the pregnancy itself. No, the pearls were being clutched because of the impression the doll gave that there was no man in the picture. Even though the packaging explicitly stated that Midge and Alan were married and this was their baby, the optics of Midge alone in her box with a baby was what Concerned Moms™ objected to. The solution wasn't to discontinue Midge, she was available for the standard market window. Mattel simply added a full size photo of the Alan doll in the Midge box, and that apparently made everything okay. 🤨

I like how much they got from watching this movie. When this movie came out I remember watching a few reviews on RU-vid made by men, and their reaction was pretty lukewarm and almost exactly the same, and it was something like "I didn't get much out of this movie, but it's fine because it's not a movie made for me ( a man)". But I feel like as a critic that's a failure. I'm also a man, and even without counting how much I laughed watching this movie, I definitely think it goes beyond just feminism. A common problem I've seen with a lot of men reacting to this (not this one, it was great) has been their overall unwillingness to accept that it lays out some uncomfortable truths very bluntly. So many reacted with a "not all men" mentality when it just isn't necessary. When it comes to interference, I did hear that Mattel were concerned about one (undisclosed) scene after reading the script so their COO flew to the UK and visited them on set. Greta and Margot sat down with him and talked through it and then performed it live. The COO got the point there were making then and left them too it, reassured in their vision and happy to trust them with the brand.

I've heard/read from different people that the sit-down was about several scenes, I've no idea which. One candidate was Sasha calling Barbie a fascist, which I can see raising a few eyebrows. Greta's probably said which bit it was about, she's done a lot of rather candid-feeling interviews since the movie came out that are well worth checking out.

There really is no such thing as "girls toys and boys toys", it is purely what is put on by society. I used to work in a children's nursery and over the years the amount of times I saw boys playing with baby dolls and wearing fairy wings while the girls played with the cars and bricks is so ridiculously higher than people would expect. This is because at nursery the kids would play with the toys that they don't have at home, parents rarely buy their sons baby dolls, or their daughters race cars, so when at nursery that's exactly what they would play with. If you offer children both options you might be surprised which ones they choose. Boys and girls both playing with baby dolls is so good for their development as it encourages empathy and independence, as well as preparing them for if they ever have a younger sibling, having a toddler change a nappy (diaper for the Americans) on a baby doll can help them see that they are not a baby anymore and can encourage them to want to stop wearing nappies themselves. Offering a variety of toys and other playing materials (such as cardboard boxes, old keys etc:) is extremely healthy and good for their development. There should not be a difference between girls toys and boys toys, children should be free to play with whatever they find interesting. Sorry, didn't mean for this to be such a long comment, just wanted to share my experience of working with children from over the years.

That's the thing I love about the message. The movie is very feminist and from the viewpoint of women. The speach was brilliant imo, I felt very seen. But the whole point is, that the system of patriarchy isn't just toxic for women, it's also toxic for men. As they said, they had the seeds of their own destruction. Ken felt like he HAD to be Barbies boyfriend to have any value, any happyness. Then built that whole construct with his boys club but in the end wasn't really happy because what he really cared about was horses and feeling valued for who he was. But learned that this doesn't have to happen through Barbie's love. He's Ken'ough the way he is.
@rhysbevan429
@rhysbevan429 4 месяца назад
"The movie is very feminist".. see the problem I have with that is that a feminist film would have ended with the best of Barbies and the best of Kens in power in Barbieland, but it doesn't. It resets to the Matriarchy of barbies, winks at the camera, showing the viewer that the write knows all along that women (when given the power) can be just as bad as men. The whole film is a critique of the real-life patriarchy but is happy to restore the previous imbalance of power. It's not feminist if people aren't treated equally.

@rhysbevan429 Yes but the narrator clearly states that the Ken's will get more power (or as much power as women nowadays have in the real world) just not right now which is to parallel the way women in the real world got their power, not all at once but rather little by little over a long period of time. The whole point of that scene was that Barbie Land (like the real world) isn't equal & that despite everything that went down in the film things wouldn't just magically become so overnight but that the BL residence now at least have the "seeds" to change (the Ken's from realising their worth dosn't come from the Barbies but that toxic musicality isn't great either & the Barbies from learning more empathy for people who are different than them by getting to feel what it's like to have no power while still being able to remember boundaries i.e. No these are our houses you can't just steal them & kick us out because you don't have your own & you're mad that we don't like you the way you want us to).

greta is absolutely masterful at what she does. one of her other movies the 2019 version of "little women" is also one of my favourites she has such a beautiful way of showing the experience of girlhood. & yes! she wrote this movie alongside her significant other noah baumbach. some other random facts are: 1. the actor that plays sasha's dad is actually america's (sashas mom's) husband in real life. and all the scenes of him learning spanish were added because greta saw america and her husband laughing about his terrible spanish on set 2. after ryan was cast in this movie he saw one of his daughters kens laying face down in the dirt in his backyard and sent a picture to greta with the caption "i shall be your ken, for his story must be told" 3. greta often dresses in outfits to match her movies. the most well known example of this is her wearing a prom dress whilst directing the prom scene in her movie ladybird. so she wore entirely pink through the duration of directing this movie. 4. the lady in the bowling scene in the montage at the end is a friend of scott evans who played one of the kens (& is chris evans brother!). her name was kimberly and scott said she adored barbie but unfortunatley passed away before she got to see it on the big screen so he put a video of her forward for the montage as a tribute

I watched the movie with my girlfriends at the cinema all decked out in pink representing different barbies and with a glas of champagne in the beginning (from our cinema) and neither of us expected to cry at the bus station scene already let alone at all because we thought it would be lighthearted but the reality of what it means to be a woman hit us straight in the face honestly. The Bus station scene, America Ferreras Speech and when Barbie turns human had me bawling simply because in the station scene the humanity around barbie touched me so deeply. It made me realize that you have no idea what‘s going on in others lives people laughing, people griefin g etc. The speech is self explanatory I just felt incredibly seen as a woman by every single sentence. and the moment barbie turns human gave me so much nostalgia I saw snippets of my childhood, memories with friends, my mum who did her best to raise my sister and I. It truly hit me. The moment I heard all my girlfriends cry with me because they too related and saw us so excited for the premiere all in our pink outfits and giggling like we used to meeting up as kids to play with dolls outside, talking about crushes, tea parties, standing up for eachother, protecting eachother. This movie honestly gave us everything and I adore it to bits because of thw plot but mostly because of the experience I had seeing all the women in the theater in unity laughing and relating to eachother. Added bonus, leaving the cinema and going to the subway and strangers yelling „hi barbie!“ for you to yell back the same/ with the ken alternative. It was truly great

As a man, I can say that I was very informed by this film of the struggle of women in society by this film when I saw Barbenheimer in the theater. What I loved about it is that it’s bipartisan in the way it breaks down gender norms. (Something I’m assuming why there’s a female and male writer for the script) It does cater towards the struggle of women more obviously, since it’s a girl’s toy. It did a good job in both respects. My favourite line is the one about the Kens having as much power and influence in Barbieland as women have in the real world! I thought that was brilliant, and literally everyone in the cinema laughed and even cheered that line when I saw it. Overall as a woman I felt so much of this film, it was not only funny, but so clever; but it also did such a good job and making you feel and see things from Ken's POV as well. People say it's a feminist film, and use feminist as if its a bad word, but I say it's a film that promotes true gender equality. It points out that Barbieland is unfair for the Kens and the Real World is unfair for women, true equality is somewhere between the two, true balance. This film has such a strong, wonderful message and it is given to us in such wonderful, fun, wrapping paper of silliness and over the top performances.

Your reactions made me so beyond happy! Some of the reactors I enjoy watching just didn't get it so it's wonderful to see some of my favorite reactors get it and enjoy it

Knew there would be tears shed!!! Its an incredible existential and empathetic movie. Love it. If you guys are up for something that kinda will give you the feels, I recommend the anime Frieren: Beyond Journey's end. It's a slice of life, fantasy adventure anime and it's beautiful.

“Better than Battleship” should have been the poster tagline.

Ariana was magnificent in this movie! I know her in Infinity War as young Gamora and Tabitha in Boss Baby: Family Business and Back in the Crib, and I recently saw her great performance as young Ahsoka on Ahsoka! I'm so proud of her for all her great achievements!!

16:00 love this scene so much great example of the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi which is basically a concept that finds the beauty in imperfections and changes that come with age

The line about mothers standing still to show far their daughters can go guts me every time.

this movie broke me lol. i’m a trans man and i actually miss presenting as a girl because the community and “sisterhood” was so nice to be a part of. i’m not saying i regret transitioning because im much happier with myself now, but women are so amazing and beautiful and they deserve the world. i’m saying this because i really appreciated Alan’s role in this movie, i feel like he represents all the feminist trans men. i am literally him. he’s so me it’s crazy.

Interpreting Alan as a trans guy makes so much sense - he just *gets it.* Personally, as a gnc lesbian, I have had some of my most interesting and intense conversations about gender and expression with my trans friends. I hope you can find more community feel in your life 💚

I related to him so much too but not as trans, as a really feminine gay guy who related more to girls growing up and never really fit in with other guys. It’s so cool seeing different interpretations of the characters since this movie is kind of a satire of gender roles and that’s something that we all have a unique relationship with!!
