The zebra striped swimsuit Barbie is wearing at this trailer is the very first outfit she wore when she was introduced by Mattel made out of cotton and was handstiched... I really love how they incorporated it in this film
I still remember watching Barbie movies every Sunday with my sister when we were little. As far as fantasy goes, Barbie had a special place among all forms of media i have ever consumed. The old folklores being presented through Barbie movies was always really fun to watch. To me, Christmas Carol, Swan Lake, Rapunzel, the 12 dancing princesses, the nut cracker, etc. Are stories I know because of Barbie.
If anything Lego Movie taught us is that movies based on toys could work as long as it's handed to the right filmmaker. And with Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach writing the script with Greta directing it, I'd say it has every opportunity to be great 🙌
@@Merdicano Absolutely, I remember people expected The Lego Movie to be terrible and be 2014's biggest flop since it's a movie that nobody ask for, but with Lord and Miller wrote and directed it, they managed to create something unique and special out of a simple brick toy that everybody love. Basically it offers something that we didn't knew we needed which is something that the Barbie movie should do
We should still be cautious yes the lego movie was amazing and it's sequel and spin off's were mostly great but lets not forget about the trolls duology or the playmobile movie
@@BryanCostner Absolutely. The most important thing is the story and message, because what I think also makes Barbie appealing is the quality of lessons taught in her animated movies. If they can lean to that, it will make the movie appeal towards all audiences. And funnily enough, I was surprised to learn that people were negative about The Lego Movie back then, the 11-12 year-old me at the time was jumping out in excitement when it got announced 😂
I haven't been to a multiplex in over a yesr, and I took a chance and saw "Barbie" over the weekend, and I am here to tell you that if this 65 year old man can have this much fun at a movie, then I can easily imagine at just how much delirious fun this wonderful motion picture is providing for the young people out there. This is what going to the movies is all about, and the stuffed shirts who run Disney had better take notice----or they need to quit and find a new line of work! This Greta Gerwig is one talented filmmaker and she deserves the huge success that she so rightly deserves. I am a classic movie lover, but I will never be able to keep a straight face again when I see The Dawn Of Man sequence in "2001: A Space Odyssey". One can just imagine Stanley Kubrick himself laughing his head off.
Believe it or not. The beginning of the trailer is actually very accurate. Before Barbie existed toys that are meant for girls were just baby dolls. This is because girls had the expectation to be mothers. Now Granted there have been dolls out there that are way way older and made out of wood and stuff that are not babies that girls can play with but it still gets the point of cross. After all Barbie was created to be an adult or a teenager because the creator of Barbie saw her child using her toys as adults that had jobs and named the barbie doll after her daughter. And the thing that she is wearing is a reference to the first Barbie doll. I think it's quite interesting that a Barbie movie is willing to talk about a little bit of its history.
@@deborahclevenger9271 true however she some how bought the rights to her so I guess the rich can steal? I still like the doll and the lesson behind it and gave girls better toys than baby dolls.
Copied from wikipedia: The earliest bisque dolls from French companies were fashion dolls. These dominated the market between approximately 1860 and 1890.[8] They were made to represent grown up women and intended for children of affluent families to play with and dress in contemporary fashions As apposed to Pandora dolls that date as far back as the 15th century but where only used by adults and the fashion industry
Even when I’m 90 years old I will confidently say the best part of my life was playing with Barbies. I swear it literally can’t be compared with anything else
The part where Barbie said to Ken "Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you, because they belong to me!" Sent chills down my spine
Right? It's actually a nod to the movie Goncharov. Nah jk, that movie doesn't exist, it's a Tumblr meme. I wasn't gonna let my hand show but I don't want to send anyone into an unreality spiral.
@@EnterSandwich Sure was! They were cute CGI films from the early 2000s that almost always had barbie cast in a fantasy setting. I think they're still making them today too but the art in the newer ones have fallen a bit flat(the earlier films actually had Barbie look like her older doll models. Now it just looks a bit too cartoony)
This film is so creatively brilliant, with lots to say about fantasy and imagination , real life (Los Angeles-style), escape, self-determination, and the roles of men and women in the patriarchy. The 2001: A Space Odyssey opening is just grilled to perfection. The young girls who came dressed as Barbie to the screening got a lesson in intelligent messaging and it may have sailed over their heads...or yet it may be a defining, awakening moment in their world. For the older "girls", it was an affirmation of their experiences. The film is really high level stuff, with very good music and wonderful production design. Everbody should see it who has a heart and mind, and a sense of humor..
I can't believe that Alexandre Desplat is gonna be the composer of the movie. From composing a bunch of Wes Anderson movies to some Guillermo Del Toro movies to Barbie, dude has been taking lots of W
This is one of the greatest trailers of all time. I’m not joking this is literal history. It’s perfectly shot and the music is different everything about this is perfect
Unfortunately, anyone who hasn't seen the greatness of "2001: A Space Odyssey" is not going to understand the historical value, narrative value, and significance of Kubrick's greatest work of science fiction. Sorry Barbie, Kubrick and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer beat you to it by over half a century.
It's definitely one of the best trailers of this year. As a movie geek, I was cracking up so hard at how well this scene/reference was executed: the music, the context...it was all so perfect!
@JiraffeJimmy I really do hope you realize this brilliant trailer is one big homage to the even more brilliant iconic scene from Stanley Kubrick's _2001: The Space Odyssey_
When the comment section shat out the exact same jokes they used for Morbius...and every movie since...it was clear they should just be pitied. They didn't have a sense of humor to call their own, so they had to rely on charity memes.
@@zandernewson9933 I don't think the target demo is little girls. It's grown up girls...AKA Millennials, AKA the first major extended adolescence generation, people in their 30s who want media that infantilises them (see: all Marvel movies, superhero movies generally, My Little Pony, Ghost Busters, Stranger Things, every '90s property that's been rebooted so people who grew up then can relive it, all Disney movies now targeting adults more than kids, etc) I saw a theory about young people in the West deferring having a family until later and later. Part of that means you get to stay a kid. You don't take your kids to see kids movies, the kids movies become for YOU.
@@L_Martin i feel like it's probably going to be at least somewhat satirical. The trailer straight up parodied 2001 a space odyssey for a Barbie trailer. Also with Greta directing, I feel it's gonna be more than just "Remember Barbie? Wasn't that great?"
Clever teaser trailer. I like that they are referencing 2001 to comment on how monumental Barbie has been in pop culture. My hope is that they're going the route of musical with this because those fun 60s technicolor visuals and the striking choreography is really speaking to me. Yeah, go all the way with it, guys. Let this be a camp classic.
@@brianaguilar8283 I don't know how to compare _2001_ with Barbie, one is among the most influential movies ever made, the other is among the most influential toys ever made
It’s so easy for the ’offended’ ones to focus on the patriarchy/feminism message whereas there are quite a lot of other layers in the film like parenthood, sisterhood/brotherhood, life choices, consumerism, etc. Yeah, it was enormously bold of Greta Gerwig (and Noah Baumbach as her co-writer) to choose this direction for the film, but in the end it all comes together so beautifully that the ending never fails to bring tears to my eyes (even the 4th time watching)🥹 and yeah, we’re Kenough✊
to be honest, I’m a 21 year old man, and proud to say that I’m genuinely excited for this film, I’m not letting my gender limit what I can and can’t watch and enjoy
im a 30 years old heterosexual male and i identify as one, and i have to say im also excited by this film. Hopefully it wont be into the woods kinda musical
She's even dressed as Lilli, the German figure which Mattel based Barbie on. Nice touch. Pre-her-story. "Open the bathroom door Barbie" "I'm sorry Ken I can't do that"
Lilli was dressed in red and pink stripes. Barbie was dressed in blue and white stripes in her earliest incarnation (1959). The trailer has her in blue and white stripes. The weird bit though, is that Barbie and Ken were originally siblings... so... it's weird.
@@nyx2875 No, literally, her bathing suit is like the first Barbie, not like Lilli at all, like the OP comment said. unless you want to go onto the whole blue dress idea, which BTW, was blue according the the company.
The legs, the hair, and so many Barbie’s are many races I love it. It’s such a huge company and Miss Barbie herself and her kids it’s such a Legacy its crazy
I just saw this film tonight in New Zealand, weeks after it launched. I was so pleasantly surprised to see this intelligent 2001 reference at the start, and I was glad this film was smart escapism!
I’m a guy and I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m really excited to see this. It looks visually stunning and Margot Robbie is a good enough reason to watch.
@@PolishGod1234 Its good reference and still a reference because they didnt copy the scene shot by shot for no reason. This scene works perfectly with their own message they are trying to send out. They also made it their own. If you really want it really spelled out for you, the girls are stuck with baby dolls but destroy it after barbie's appearance because she is the dawn of a new age where women could be someone more than being a mother. It is an change, a literal advancement, an EVOLUTION. Get it?
I'm always pleasantly surprised when a piece of Barbie media is better than expected (from the meme fodder of the 2000's to the better animated shows recently). Now it's becoming an actual thing with heavy production value, and I'm happy for it.
Truly. Barbie Dreamhouse is honestly a joy to watch and it's both for kids and kids-at-heart/people who grew up with Barbie. I love how they grew up with their main demographic.
Yes! It struck me as very cheeky at first. I immediately got the reference. But then, I understood the entirety of this movie, and its significance. Like Kubrick's epic, it is about transcendence, about evolution beyond the mere human. Like the Kubrick masterpiece, this film will endure, a work of singular genius. And then I watched Oppenheimer... No dichotomy, there, just a spectacular moment where two stories expand our world...
this is pretty correct in terms of the history of barbie, before the barbie doll, most dolls were either baby dolls or ones that looked like children, a few dolls were out that were adults but they did not last and still had baby like faces
@@MrCracknballs it's about how doll toys have always been apart of growing up for young girl, but when the invention of Barbie came out it totally radicalized the industry and took over literally almost every girls wishlist. pay attention
@@MrCracknballs This trailer that does not tell me anything about the plot made me more excited to see it than any trailer I had seen in the past, oh, at least ten years. Because it sets a tone and that is usually far, far more important for one's enjoyment of a film. Now let's hope the trailer does not lie about the tone (because that happened to me recently).
Just saw this movie and absolutely loved it. Opening scene was hilarious because it was so true. I just loved the message and I love the way the movie got that message out just fantastic. PS I think I had every single Barbie and every single Barbie car, house, boat, etc..
But I hope we can get a "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" sequel after that soon, because Simu Liu is the PERFECT actor for Shang-Chi. The MCU did the good casting. I wonder if Wenwu (Played by Tony Leung) returns.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think the Barbie movie trailer will start like this, and I'm loving it. This seems it's gonna be an awesome competition for Oppenheimer.
My opinion is that the movie is supposed to be goofy with funny lines but what did I see? A philosophical and motivational movie. Makes me realise how being happy forever is so POINTLESS (which isn't what society sell nowadays, specially with social media which is like the Barbie world itself). Its for kids and adults at the same time. Each one gets it in a different way. One of the best movies of 2023.👍
Me and the boys are ready for this one. This is cinema at it's finest. I expect you all to treat this with the respect it deserves. I better see you dressed like you're meeting the president himself, and acting like it too. This is a classy piece, no time for hooligans.
I remember watching this beginning scene in the big large screen at theatre and when she came out literally everyone was extremely incredibly amazed by her flawless and indescribably stunning beauty!!!!
i was amazed by her being around 120 feet tall, The Music, the expressions and actions of the little girls... there was a lot to watch - had they altered her image to fit the impossible proportions of Barbie? She is beautiful. Did you see that little girl touch her and jump away? like it's too amazing to be true? Like in the original! Then the wink. a lot there. THE MUSIC, did i mention that?
OK, I’ve seen the film twice already but somehow this is the first time I’m watching this trailer (I’ve watched the other two countless times, the second teaser trailer was what got me interested in this film when before I wasn’t really thinking about “that Barbie movie”) and I can see why people went crazy over it, this is GOLDEN. 😭 I ADORE the transition from the baby doll to the logo, which is, of course, in the movie itself.
This trailer was perfectly nostalgic and reminds me of a time when people would show up early to the cinema, just to make sure they wouldn’t miss the previews. So excited for Barbie!! 🎀💖
This is definitely not my kind of movie but it looks much better than I expected because that 2001 Space Odyssey reference with the legs was pure brilliance. It honestly looks like a fun movie and I hope the people who are excited for it enjoy it.
@@nancyneyedly4587 no the creator didnt have any connection to barbies maker what so ever idk who told you that even barbie sued bratz for being more succesful the only connection was they both are in mettals company so idk why you say that you lack knowledge
Barbie created an entirely new American doll market in the 1960s. Bratz as a concept was in direct competition with Barbie in the 2000s, just as Jem was in the 1980s. Barbie DID pioneer the fashion doll, and you can't sue someone for being "more successful" than you. You have to sue them for, oh let's say intellectual property theft or something. Maybe if you still Mattel cast-offs to make your prototypes, that might be a problem. That said, if you've got happy memories of your dolls, who cares about corporate lawsuits?
Before they said a Barbie movie was being made I always thought Margot would make the perfect barbie and when I heard it was going to be official I was shook! 💖💖💖💖
You know, ever since The Lego Movie, i've gave films based on toys the benefit of the doubt that seems like cash grab pieces of garbage. But with Gerwig and Baumbach writing the script, it definitely has every opportunity to be great. If Lego could work as a movie, might as well Barbie. Since this is a WB movie, I can assume that they looked at Lego Movie and wanna repeat the success of the first one with this
I’m in my 7th decade of life & still have my Casey & Barbie dolls, case & clothes. I got Casey one Christmas bc she was the younger version & less physically “mature.” Barbie arrived the next year. They’re in amazing condition bc they were the only ones I owned & I took such care of them during the countless hours of play.
The fact that a Barbie film with an ensemble cast written by Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach, and directed by Greta is coming out is crazy enough, but the fact that this and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (also with a giant ensemble cast) come out the exact same day is even crazier. I for one can't wait for that double feature...
WB going up against a movie directed by a guy that used to be their wingman is hilarious and sad but I'm sure the two of them will both be good to each of their own.
I thought the same thing, it gave me those vibes too with all the retro goofy outfits and doll like world. Still I was hoping for a more serious vibe like in the Barbie animated movies but it's clear this movie isn't taking itself seriously and is more targeted for the general public than the fans :/
@@ginandromeda1618 Hopefully, when the film comes out, there's something long time fans can enjoy. This is just a teaser, so there could be something deeper under the surface. Overall, this seems like a nice celebration of Barbie's lifespan, or at least I hope it is.
