The dust had barely settled on Barbie Land. After multiple watches and months of reflection, we look back at the phenomenon of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 hit Barbie and ask the big questions: Why make Ken the best character? With 45 Mattel films in the works, what does the future of film look like? What will the unstoppable force of Margot Robbie’s production team turn to next? And why the **** was Maisie crying throughout all of it?
Frank Film Club is the club for lovers and makers of film. From shots and dialogue to casting and score, we unpack little-known indies, box office smashes, documentaries, foreign language and everything in between. Hosted by actor and producer, Maisie Williams, casting director Hannah Marie Williams, and filmmaker and producer, Lowri Roberts. Come and join us as we navigate the mad world of film.

If men feel they weren't represented in Barbie, go make your own film. Barbie is largely women hashing out their feelings. Men have every opportunity, more so than women, to create their own art relating to their own feelings on the subject. And it's typical of men (historically mostly, but still very present today) that they insert themselves into everything when a topic isn't actually about them, nor is it their fight, or their podium to speak from. They are still very unwilling to listen, to truly listen, without the "but what about me" arguments. Men should go into Barbie with no expectations, in silence, and come out saying "this is what women are feeling", not telling them that they've expressed their feelings incorrectly, or they've missed a perspective. Just listen. If you have more to add to the conversation, make your own art that does so, but don't take away from this work in the process.

I really think both parties, the ones who criticized the movie for "hating on men", and the ones who praised it for "super feminist message" got it wrong. I don't think the movie is that much "modern" by today's standards which is really good as it can resonate on some levels with everyone, both Barbies and Kens were portrayed rather nicely as flawed but generally innocent beings trying to figure out real life problems. Most of the movie's message is very equality second wave feminist centered with couple of scenes which are being interpreted as super feminist and relatable but are just sarcastically funny, and I think Greta did it on purpose, at least for the most part, cause everything is so over the top here. For example everyone is talking about patriarchy, but they don't have faintest idea what it means, even Ken who thinks it's all about horses, and don't realize you need real competence in real life to be in charge, also you have some spoiled gen-Z calling Barbie fascist, earlier some weird catcalling scenes where random people on the beach are suddenly predatory towards strangers in colorful 90' clothes. Even Gloria's monologue, the scene that is supposed to be the most empowering and moving was kind of ridiculed cause it was used for "disenchanting" Barbies so they could then overpower Kens using "enchantment" of their own in form of childish emotional manipulation. And don't forget that whatever happens in that world doesn't really matter cause all the power structure, all the degrees, competence, ideas are just fake, that's why at the end Barbie choses the real world to really live with all ups and downs of being a human. There's certain level of criticism there on ideological bubbles, echo chambers, culture gender wars, and call for everyone to figure out their own path whatever it is, and I wish it was more clear for the people. Overall it was a fun movie and the best way to experience is it's with the brain switch off a little bit because it's mostly dark comedy that people made it into something way more than it is.
