Barbie is a 2023 American fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. Based on the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, who go on a journey of self-discovery after their expulsion from Barbieland, alongside a large ensemble cast that includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Helen Mirren, and Will Ferrell.

I agree! I think that’s what the movie was trying to tell us. The Barbs are a reflection of what we or they think of . And the Stereotypes of real life personality and what we dream we could be. The Stereotypical Barbie represents the obvious and what we believe we can be. And no I don’t think they looked a like. Maybe the doll but not in the movie 🙃. I love the message of finding what makes you YOU! I think we can relate to that sense of belonging that we all look for.

I think because she didn’t know she was having an identity crisis really. She just wanted to get back to Barbie Land and have everything be back the way it was. That was her motivation, but as she started to think more deeply and become more self aware she gained agency and realised she didn’t want that anymore. She wanted to be a whole person and not just a stereotype.

I think Barbie and Ken not having defined personalities is kind of the point, so that didn't bother me, and I loved how committed Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were to every facet of it. You are, however, right when it comes to America Ferrera and Ariana Greenblatt, I do feel those characters were shortchanged for that really weird patriarchy subplot, and while I do think a lot of people will connect with the commentary, it did get annoying how surface-level a lot of it was (which it sort of has to be, if it's Barbie)... I wish Gloria and Sasha had been driving more of the narrative and we had spent more time in the Real World (which... even that got too weird at times).

As a young woman myself who grew up playing with Barbies, I did notice the strong emphasis on “the contemporary feminist message” this movie focused on, and while it came close to bothering me luckily I think the movie was smart enough to not overstep the line too often and also tackle other topics and issues aside from “women are victims in the male world”. Like you mentioned, the scene where Barbie just takes in her surroundings and gets emotional for the first time was really emotional, all her scenes with Ruth were very deep explorations on existence and even the speech the Mom gives you didn’t like was not as preachy as one would think when you realise how often we all (men and women) still get put into boxes- you can’t be a successful modern woman and still enjoy being a full-time mother, you can’t be a loving and considerate man and still enjoy big & loud cars. The whole Ken-sublot could have been handled a bit better imo but it did show that both women AND men need a place in this (and the fictional) world. If you think this movie was too agenda-filled and preachy, imagine my surprise when out of the cinema my very conservative mother said she absolutely loves the movie and everything it did. As usual you get from a story what you yourself bring into it.

Yeah I unfortunately think a lot of movies have devolved into the same trap that stand up comedy has. The whole substance being that X ideological predisposition is presented, and the entertainment is supposed to come from sharing said disposition. I'm a left leaning person so I'm not upset by it in that sense, but there is clearly very little substance behind it. But you're also right that people will see what they want to see. I'm jaded from being familiar with socially progressive discourse, and very politically involved conservatives will cry about it being woke.

@@mrpurple11 I'm tired of almost every piece of media being about how I as a viewer am supposed to self-gongratulate myself for not being a bigot. I'm supposed to find entertainment and enjoyment in watching the show or the movie that the bigots hate. It's a huge circle jerk. Especially when it's manufactured to seemingly being purposefully provocative toward bigoted people. There's a lot of boring shows and movies that I'm supposed to wanna watch and defend to "stick it" to bigoted people. It's a massive red flag when a show uses its diversity as its primary marketing, once again, seemingly trying to cater to the lowest common denominator of people who want basic or sometimes fringe socially progressive talking points regurgitated to them.

It is a shame that there was so much brilliant art direction, set work, props and costumes but it isn’t being supported by the writing. Or, even sabotaged. Doug tends to not dwell on “the message” stuff, so if even he is pointing it out and bothered, that says something.
@TheReeelBradPitt
@TheReeelBradPitt Год назад
That’s my only complaint about it, everything else about it was brilliant, everything works when it’s not preaching, I’m usually not one to complain about the occasional hamfisted political comments that don’t fit in the movie, but it is not subtle at all with its message. Spoilers There’s a point in the movie that revolves around saving the brainwashed Barbies from the ken patriarchy, by giving them a speech about being a woman, one by one that physically unbrainwashes them, while distracting the dumb kens by using their fragile male egos to put them against each other. It’s not like I’m exaggerating either, there’s a monologue playing over the whole scene that uses every word I used plus some more. Patriarchy is a literal plot point used by name

@FunkyKikuchiyo
@FunkyKikuchiyo Год назад
@@bryfaith yeah, good story telling is always at least a little Socratic. It should ask questions and invite the reader/listener/viewer in to consider what is put in front of them. @@TheReeelBradPitt When they started listing off things, it went on got like 5 minutes. But at least the lack of music let us heat the Oppenheimer bomb in the theatre to the right lol. I agree though, I think it's still worth checking out because the performances are great, and the comedy in the first half is legit great. Maybe it's weird to some people that it seems so explicit, but the absurdness works really well here. However, there really is a clear peak in terms of the jokes about halfway through. There weren't very many laughs in the last half, which made the ham fisted message particularly painful. I feel like a good 30 or 40 minutes could've been removed, didn't need to be 2 hours.

Barbie doesn't really have a character. She's the original Bella Swan in that she's supposed to be the thing onto which you project yourself. She can be anything and I honestly think if this was trying to be a more traditional film with exploring her as a character it wouldn't have worked as well. She's more of a symbol than anything else and that symbolism is worth analyzing. There are movies that do what you want: Life-Size and Mannequin. They're not deep dives into character but they are mostly fun and are more character based than commentary based. I really don't think a Barbie character study would really work. Its fair to expect a film centered and following a specific character, to develop said character. If there are 40+ films doing it better, then surely that only opens this version up to more criticism. Yes Barbie is a doll, but I felt she was a prop in her own film. I actually agree with most of the messaging but it felt like the characters were simply a mouthpiece for the writers. I couldn't really see how any of the characters developed their views (particularly how all the Barbies could express "deep" feminist discourse despite having only ever lived in a world they ruled and having only been controlled by very young girls.

Just from what I've seen and heard (so, I might be completely wrong but won't admit to it or change anything after I eventually watched the movie), I think the way it is, it might have more potential to stick to pop culture for a long time, even if it's just as a "what the hell was going on in the 2020s?" fever dream. Maybe, in terms of plot and well-rounded message, focusing on the mother and daughter arch would have created a more well-rounded movie. But let's be honest, do we need another movie about a mother and daughter/father and son duo who are at odds and are brought back together by a dolly godmother/dog/another dog/polar bear cub/cat/Golden Retriever/care bear/horse/Captain Hook who comes to steal the children and forces the as-good-as-estranged dad do turn back into Peter Pan to save them/Freaky Friday Magic or a dog and it all ends with words of profound every-day-wisdom and a hug?

How many protagonist archetypes are there in fiction? About seven. How many stories actually exist? About a dozen, the rest are permutations of those concepts. A simple meal well prepared can be just as satisfying as a gourmet meal. A movie doesn't need to be "Art" to be a movie, it simply needs to be entertaining and told well. When a story resonates with people, we tend to use it again and again (how many Twilight clones were there when Meyers hit it big?). A movie like what you described might be formulaic, but there's always going to be an audience for that, and it'd be easy to enjoy. What do people not like? Being lectured about politics and 'problematic behavior' in a movie that was advertised as being a kid friendly movie that adults who grew up with the product could also enjoy. This movie is trying to be "Art" and it's so misplaced, to the point where it detracts from the movie as a whole. Yes, this film is making money now, but there's a ton of people that watched it because they thought it was how I described it as advertised instead of the 80% political message we got. Lo and behold, they didn't enjoy it and are vocal about their disappointment. For comparison's sake, Ghostbusters 2016 was a good opening weekend, but word of mouth spread and it plummeted down the charts, and became a colossal flop. We'll see how this film fares, with having similar messages and theming.

Im was never into Barbie, but i was exposed to it enough to imagine that in Barbieland, women, or the Barbies, are the dominant gender, since they play every role, president, doctors, military, cops etc. So would it make more sense that Ken would be the oppressed/discriminated gender? So, if anything, Ken should be the one learning from the real world that he can be anything, not just a Barbie accessory. In the trailer, Ken(Gosling) was looking for a male doctor, and he assumed that a female doctor is not a real thing when in the world he came from, I assumed most doctors will be Barbies, so that's a kinda stupid plot hole.

That was the point though, the Kens, and the main Ken in particular, are treated that way as an allegory. My "favorite" part is how the way the Barbies regain power is essentially by brainwashing, sowing discontent through propaganda, and then ultimately diving and conquering by storming the government building and assuming absolute control while the interim government wasn't present. They literally performed a fascist coup d'etat, and it's supposed to be the "good message", as if to say their cause is so weak in ideological strength that they needed to resort to assuming power through the same means as the actual fascists did in WWII.

Review from someone who grew up with Barbie: This movie made me feel like everything I loved about Barbie was valued and loved. It was like feeling like a little girl again, looking at my favorite Barbie and imagining what she could be like that day. Every emotional moment took me by force, every joke I understood very well because I knew these stories and seeing her up close being the barbie was much more special. In my country, the person who dubbed Margot Robbie was the voice of Barbie from the movies and cartoons of my childhood. So it was like seeing an old friend again, but this time she needed me. It's hard to express, but it was so genuinely special to me, especially the final stretch of the film. I cried with Barbie, I smiled with Barbie and I knew that she was the same girl as many years ago despite having changed so much. The basic Barbie was my favorite because she could be whatever I wanted without anyone telling her who she should be. I didn't think Barbies wanted to be anything other than Barbie, but that basic Barbie that no one told her she should be other than beautiful? This one wanted to be more than just basic Barbie, she wanted to be able to dream like the people who dreamed with her. For me was a perfect Barbie movie.

Literally in the intro of the movie it says that Barbie being able to be anything is supposed to empower women to be/do anything. Barbie WAS CREATED, she EXISTS for the message of women's rights, that's why 'the message' is such a central part of the movie and the characters. I grew up with the classic CGI Barbie movies, i was and still am a huge fan. The irony for me with this movie is that the originals have much better commentary and themes while still being an engaging movie. Erica left her king to travel the world before settling down, Elina had no romantic partner at all and saved her world twice. Genevieve worked with Derek to expose Duchess Rowena. Rapunzel saved her prince's sisters and the prince himself. These weren't passive characters who were put upon by men, and the men weren't soyboys or alpha men, Julian was a man who searched for Annalise and formulated a plan to save her. Aiden sacrificed his hope of reunification with his family for Annika. We need more movies with character like these. Strong women who don't need men, but chose *men* who support them. There are lots of legitimately great arguments for why the patriarchy is a bad thing, and they addressed NONE of them. They could’ve delivered a good message here but it instead just devolved into nothing but a “poor me, being a woman is so hard” pity party. The scene where the mom is bitching to all the Barbies about all the struggles of being a woman was especially cringe. Most of her complaints either applied ALL people (not just women) or boiled down to “Society’s expectations are hypocritical/contradictory” and can be resolved by simply not trying to please every human. The humor was great but the writing of the social/political commentary was absolutely atrocious, it’s like something straight out of the r/im14andthisisdeep subreddit

@@TJOEL20The ending clearly states why patriarchy as a concept exists. It was an idea created by men because they felt uncomfortable with their lives. That’s what Ruth was talking about. And that’s why Barbie tells Ken that he needs to find out who he is without her. If men were more comfortable with themselves, then patriarchy wouldn’t have felt needed. It’s insecure, toxic masculinity that does nobody any favors.
@TJOEL20
@TJOEL20 10 месяцев назад
@@Little1Cave A: why it was created isn’t the same as why it’s bad. B: That’s NOT even why patriarchy is a thing. Patriarchy is a thing because people crave power, and men throughout history have just been in a convenient position to seize power by historically always being the “providers” and the defenders/warriors. Has nothing to do with insecurity or toxic masculinity, every human being to ever exist craves and loves power and will seize that power if the opportunity arises, regardless of security with one’s self or levels of masculinity. Barbie’s viewpoint is like a shallow thinking and uneducated 12-year-old’s perspective of the patriarchy. And C: The movie makes the point fall COMPLETELY flat by making the women in control of everything in the Barbie world. So does that mean in Barbie Land, women are the ones who are insecure and controlled by their toxic femininity? Why is one bad and the other is good? That’s why the movie failed to communicate an actual message against the patriarchy, because it becomes hypocritical in that message. They could’ve had an anti-patriarchy message OR a Barbie Land where the power roles are reversed, but by doing both it’s contradictory by nature. That’s just poor writing.
@Little1Cave
@Little1Cave 10 месяцев назад
@@TJOEL20 And why do people crave power? Because they either have none or are at least afraid of having none. That’s why Ken initially found it so appealing, because he had a taste of power and respect that he never experienced in Barbieland. He took over Barbieland because he wanted that power and respect, but was still ultimately powerless in the Real World. And this hinges on the fact that, surprise, Barbieland isn’t a utopia. It is for the Barbies, but not the Kens. The President of Barbieland made it very clear that things shouldn’t go back to the way things used to be, and gave the Kens at least SOME power (eventually to the same level that women will have in the Real World). It’s not the guys that have better things to do and are happy with where they’re at that call for patriarchy. It’s the guys who are insecure and feel powerless (especially with women) who benefit most from patriarchy and therefore would push for it. I feel like the movie makes it very clear why patriarchy is bad. Barbies became brainwashed and hopeless, and Kens became insufferable and self-destructive. Don’t even need to explain it with how much it beats you over the head as to why patriarchy sucks. Lol

Mattel once tried to sue Tom Forsythe for his Photo Series involving Barbies and trying to draw a parallel between Barbie and shallow consumerism. Mattel lost and was ordered to pay all legal fees. Mattel also tried to sue MCA Records for the release of Aqua's main hit song, "Barbie Girl." The courts repeatedly dismissed the case. Barbie is such a massive entity, household name, and successful brand, that she (and the brand itself) are household names. Barbie IS social commentary, and if she's isn't currently commenting herself, she becomes the subject of commentary. If you need another example of this, look no further than conservatives crying and pounding their fists over the Green M&M spokes-candy briefly being put into tennis shoes instead of her high-heeled go-go boots, and it should make sense. Barbie cannot be anything nor go anywhere without at least some social or political commentary. Heck, even in the "Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse" series, Raquelle is a character that exists almost solely to be Barbie's antagonistic fremeny, but ironically also serves as more social commentary on just how unrealistic of standards Barbie maintains that virtually nobody can keep up with.

I feel like at some point, we as a society started to shape our identities more around the products we consume rather than our material conditions, and this seems like a movie that plays with that idea by being named after a brand like every other blockbuster, but using it as a vehicle to discuss material conditions.
@falgalhutkinsmarzcal3962
@falgalhutkinsmarzcal3962 Год назад
@@franklinbadge1215but this movie IS a material product. However, it is not meant for children, obviously, and it is more like a choir rally for women who grew up only to feel ambivalence about their childhood toys, which is just not fair. Barbie was a toy made by a woman for girls that features an icon that was a doctor, an astronaut, and countless other things. And it is not like tribal societies do not make toys for their children to help their individuation process. The whole "materialism bad" is tired and overplayed, especially in a society that has no idea what it is like to NOT have material possessions. A medieval peasant girl would have loved to have a Barbie rather than a straw faceless doll.

There are already a bunch of good animated Barbie movies, if what you want is a movie about Barbie the character. This movie is about Barbie the social phenomenon, and it's a way for a bunch of middle aged women to watch a hot girl wear tons of pretty clothes while also feeling very smart and self-important and ironic about the whole thing. In a way it's similar to some of the recent adaptations of male brands, in that it's both parasitic on the appeal of the original property while using the movie as a chance to deconstruct it (Lucasfilm comes to mind). It's more stylish than the most recent Bond or Lucasfilm movie though.

Just saw this with a friend. Aesthetically it's a pretty and creative movie to watch. Margot Robbie is a great actress. It felt preachy at times, though. I agree that it felt like the commentary was driving the movie and not the characters. Still entertaining a fair bit, but I personally wouldn't watch it again. Honestly, if they chose a storyline and stuck with it, it'd feel less messy, but they throw a lot at you. It was simultaneously about Barbie's existential crisis, and a challenging relationship between a mom and daughter, and the mom feeling an emptiness in her life, and society's expectations of women, and Ken taking a bizarre turn (won't spoil), and patriarchy, and both Barbie and Ken's identity crisis, and.... honestly I could go on, but you get the point, it's a lot. With all of this crammed in, there's not a lot of room to explore any of these points in an insightful or subtle way. Because of this, the film feels shallow at times, which I definitely think is not what it's going for. I felt like if they explored the relationship between Barbie, America Ferrara, and her daughter, it would've been a more interesting movie with a more substantial message. Barbie discovering that she doesn't have to be perfect all the time, America Ferrara discovering that it's okay to vocalize your own discontentment and remember that imaginative little girl inside of you who had aspirations and a zest for life, and her daughter realizing that her mom struggles with the same insecurities that she does and that's okay, and acknowledging that Barbie doesn't have to represent "unattainable perfection" but instead be a tool for young girls to dream and be excited for their future.

Tbh I’m disappointed of what I hear about this movie. Barbie has always been about having…Fun. I grew up watching a few Barbie movies, playing her games and have even seen some some episodes of the Barbie Dream House show. Barbie as a franchise knew it was catering to the fantasies of young children and it never betrayed that. So I was hoping a live-action Barbie would lean into that, somehow. Keeping that bizarre humor and fantasy presented in other Barbie media. What I’m hearing from others doesn’t make this movie seem like that at all. I already dislike the idea of “what if cartoon character was in OUR WORLD??!?” Scenario. Just…You could’ve done so much with Barbie and they chose *that*?

As someone who wanted a deeper thought-out piece, this movie broke my heart. Its silly, but there are constant high effort male IP films (DC, Marvel, ECT) that arent always good, but always have the oppurtunity to be good. there are not many Female aimed non kid movies about female IPs (see how tanked Winx and Powerpuff girls was). I feel like this was a one shot for it and failed miserably. I apprecaite the behind the scenes, the way the character committed, but the over the top explaining, and the clear hyper control mattel had ruined it. in a weird way, it felt like they spent the whole movie trying to convince me that they know what its like to be a woman, but were so obvious in there talking points it made me feel talked down to. There is some crazy adversity woman are facing right now, and I had a lot of hope for the possible impact of this film, it fell so short and feels like it gave woman haters a lot of fresh material.
