Barbra Streisand never looked as lovely as she does in this scene. The Royal Pavillion at Brighton, the costume by Cecil Beaton, the cinemaphotograpy by Harry Stradling, and especially the direction by Vincente Minnelli make this a moment to treasure. Twenty-five years before, when he was directing Judy Garland in "Meet Me in St. Louis", he did the same thing with her. Magic. Sheer magic...
@@thewalrusaurusYes, Burton Lane. He was very young himself, only early 20s. Still, it wasn’t hard to recognise Judy Garland/Frances Gumm had a remarkable voice even when aged 13! There seems such a difference in period and styles of music between the 1930s and the 1960s.
Watched the film for the first time in about 40 years last night! I had forgotten this is the reason I have loved her since I was young...Truly fabulous
Can we please just take a moment to appreciate these absolutely gorgeous lyrics? The way she sings them, with such earnest, completely encapsulates the depth of a woman's love. "For I’ll decode every breath and every sigh Till your every lover's wish Is fulfilled before it's made Toss in some jealousy and doubt Should it be required Not to rest till there's nothing more desired Thus loving as I do Never, never will you ever be untrue Having love with all the trimmings Waiting home for you..."
+ASwept&GarnishedLife - I believe she is beautiful - not to mention her style of singing.. Gosh.. I love this song. Thank you Miss JessieA for posting the words.. they are truly lovely.. Hey - I did a good imitation at a bar back in the 70s.. It worked! LOL
I think its Barbras most beautiful piece on film. She's absolutely stunning. With that voice and the costume and her hands there's nothing more beautiful. Those finger nails are incredible. Natural too.
This has to be one of my very favorite Streisand songs - She's a matchless talent and seduces us all by caressing the lyrics with her incredible voice.
So beautiful she is!! The set lighting and make-up are perfect. A definite come heather look ! I've lost count how many times I've watched this clip. Her voice should be declared a National Treasure!. Only wish she was singing it to me.
MJT And to think that many, many years ago when she was first getting started in the acting business and doing theatre she would go on stage and do a monologue and one of the stage directors literally told the casting agent “I deliberately told you I don’t want ugly girls in my shows.” This is a true story. Barbra Streisand is every inch an amazing artist, singer, actress, movie producer, mother, wife and superstar. Her delicate features and that beautiful nose of hers and her lips are so pronounced that she literally looks like one of those female statues by MichelAngelo. People used to make fun of her nose and to me it is a huge part of her trademark. 👌🏻☺️
Pure Vincent Minnelli. He takes an unusual looking woman and makes her look incredibly stunning. Look at the magic he did with Judy Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis. The man deserves every bit of praise he ever received.
*In a rich dark Georgian setting, Barbra is in white and shines like a light!* All her looks, her movements, the way she fondles the crystal goblet... seduction! I could spend hours just talking about that Cecil Beaton jeweled turban she wears! *Gorgeous!!*
her very eyes smolder. this is sensuality to rival the most legendary movie goddesses: Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Sophia Loren, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner... need I go on?
Mrs Brolin is a bloody miracle. she is one of the greatest singers of all times she is so gifted in anything she puts her heart and soul in. But she paid her dues and I am very happy that she found a perfect man to stand by her side. She is very sensitive and hard willed She has been a joy to love.
This song was not in original Broadway score and written and tailored just for her. The attraction between these beauties is so intense that it blocks out everything else. The wine glass becomes a symbol for that. Never photographed more beautifully, she and this film still sweep me away from reality. She continues to captivate as she approaches 80.
The footmen in livery moving around in the background, let’s not overlook how much they bring to the aesthetic and dramatic impact of this performance.
I've always loved this song and it's lyrics, but my favorite line is "Toss in some jealousy and doubt should it be required". Other than the theme song of the movie, this is my favorite song from the film.
John Richardson, who plays Robert Tentrees (the handsome no-goodnik with whom Melinda/Barbra falls in love in this scene) was also the object of Ursula Andress' passion in the 1965 film "She". (Apparently his good looks made up for the fact that he had all the personality of a speed bump). Then again: how many men can say that they were lusted after by Barbra Streisand and Ursula Andress, even in a fictional context? And he can still say it; he's still with us (28 January 2020 speaking).
see the gorgeous blonde Robert Tendrees (real name John Richardson) after his divorce he moved to a small village....see that gold trimmed Royal Pavilion where she did the scene outside (it's at Brighton) off a main road and unreal...I lived in London 3 yrs and when I saw it in person...I gasped...its that bright and stunningly beautiful. I left the UK a week before Diana died. I didn't have to come back...my stupid error. Sadly, John' died from covid, at 86, 2021.
This is truly one of her finest performances. The song is breathtaking. "None of the loves you have known could prepare you for the love raging everywhere in me."
Beautiful song, so beautifully sung by Barbra. I can't help notice the other dinner guests and the way they devoured their food. They must have been raised by Fagin!
I love how she just slipped a glass of wine right down her chest @ 2:37 and NOBODY seems to notice! Lol and her and the woman @ 2:04 just chowing down on that chicken!
I was a young girl when I first saw this. She took my breath away. I learned then, how it was to love a man. And I still feel the same way. When I love, I love hard. This image of her, the outfit, the song speaks true womanhood for me. Timeless.....
Anyone who thinks Barbra Streisand is ugly is crazy. She’s stunning. I always think God gave her a larger nose on purpose, otherwise, she’d be too perfect and have to be an angel way too soon.
If you're as old as I am, you'll know that this was a bit scandalous in 1970 -- Barbra placing a wine goblet in her décolleté! But the song is beautiful, and so is Barbra. The movie is somewhat sad because this gigolo was indeed untrue and caused her eventual execution.
This scene is an almost exact recreation of an actual royal banquet held at Brighton Pavilion by the Prince of Wales, while he was still regent for his mad father, King George III. (We have an extraordinarily detailed engraving that portrays the entire scene; and, yes, those incredible costumes really WERE this incredible). I don't doubt for a moment that Barbra, with her brains, talent and alluring appearance, would have been as dominant a figure in the Regency era as she's been in ours. The Duchess of Devonshire and Lady Caroline Lamb would have had to look to their laurels.
So much I could say....How about this? I saw this as a kid....I thought that the "in the present " segments were cute and funny. They still ARE....(so much that as a kid, I didn't even REALIZE when I first saw it that it was JACK playing her stepbrother.) But the 1815 segments, I didn't "get". My GOD. I do NOW as an adult. [More recent edit....Part of the reason I didnt "get it" is that around 25 minutes of Minelli's cut of the film had been deleted....mostly the 1815 sequences but also a number in which Jack Nicholson SINGS to her] This took a G rating in 1970? I had forgotten that Vincent Minnelli did this. It shows. Amazing detail to period mixed with light comedy that only the Director of Gigi and An American in Paris could give. And her outfit? Cecil Beaton....did it for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and strikes again here! The jewels reflecting with camera with perfect timing. So underrated. The LEGENDARY Nelson Riddle Supervised and Orchestrated the score. [Later Edit] It just now dawned on me that this is the exact same time period as Bridgerton!
Thank You So Much for posting this! I will be watching it over & over again. One of my favorites! I have always thought this was the most sensual, sexy, music/movie songs I've ever seen. You could feel the electricity between Melinda & Robert. She's a good actress too! I got to see her Aug 6 in Vegas. She's the Best!
I've always wondered if they filmed Love with All the Trimmings with her lypsinging the lyrics. But for the final film, it was decided to use the inner-monologue version. I've read a lot on the film, but nothing ever said that Vincent Minnelli filmed two versions. Maybe Barbra's upcoming 2023 bio may give us a clue - which the book is more about her movie career than her personal life.
Watching her sing the way she did ...to that gorgeous man...then and now...still has that fiery effect. The steamy feeling at that distance...omg I'd love to feel that. I think I'm too old for a man who'd want me like THIS...now. lol
AH Angela...that is so sweet of you. I know what you mean. I met one man ...finally...after being friends for years. Ya know...a FB friend. Sweet guy. For a change. We kissed. The kind that makes fireworks. I never thought that would happen in my life. After 4 marriages(2 didn't count)....to find a guy like this...amazed me. I just regret not meeting years ago. He says the same. I just don't want to be pushy ...but it's not easy to hold back saying "I am IN love" to him. You're right...we gotta live...not just a little. A lot!!! *Genie*
The guy I mentioned....just up and stopped talking to me in July. I know why. It breaks my heart. I realized not that I fell IN love ....but that it was truly the first time I ever did. I think he did also....but the problem is...we were both married....unhappily to someone we each didn't feel a love for. He got divorced....I haven't yet. I think he's mad at me for that. But it's not easy...to get out. I'd never give up on that guy...will always have him in my heart. The divorce thing....I'm hoping to get the paperwork on a roll. The wait is crazy. It's time to be free...to be the me I wanted to be...and be happy. Maybe then he will want me. If not...it is what it is. His choice. *Genie*
And also....this song was not even IN the Broadway version , it was added here specifically for Babs. This was done all the time in Film Musicals. (They also did this for her in Funny Girl and Hello, Dolly)
Estupendo! Many thanks for your elegant tribute to both Ms. S, Mr. Minnelli, as well as both Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner ! I'm delighted to know you! Best regards!
I think the music at the beginning is music to a song called Tosy and Cosh, that was in the stage version but not the movie. You can hear it on the Broadway cast album.
