I was about 7 years old, asked my dad pull over until this song finished before hitting the tunnels, I have never stopped loving this song. I was in college when this song was released. In those days, they released a single a couple of weeks before the full album was out out..to generate interest in the album. Those two weeks were torture! When the day finally arrived (like Christmas! 😛) I ran to the record store and they were sold out!! 😭 I don’t remember much after that except a police car and a man in a white coat with a syringe with a really big needle...🤪 Anywho, consider a reaction to the final track, “Make It Like A Memory.” A bluesy-pop number that at the time was said to be her opus.

Barry released the Guilty demos, in case you want to hear him sing “I am a woman in love...” while channeling Babs. All songs were custom written with her vocal abilities in mind. Robin co-wrote on 5 of the songs, Maurice only on Guilty, as he was dealing with alcohol issues, and Albhy Galuten Co-wrote on 3. Besides the two duets, Barry provides backing vocals on RUN WILD, PROMISES, and LIFE STORY.

Just a trivia note about this song and the album (because I’m all ‘bout the trivia, ya know). The album “Guilty” was at the #1 spot on the albums chart, at the same time that the single “Woman in Love” was at the #1 spot on the singles chart. I have an original Cashbox Magazine from 1980 (a music trade publication), showing both charts! Barbra’s discography includes: 117 singles, 36 studio albums, 9 compilations, 7 live albums and 15 soundtracks. Of all of these, the match-made-in-heaven collaboration album between Barry Gibb and Barbra Streisand “Guilty”, remains Barbra’s highest selling album ever, to this day. I have actively followed Barbra’s career since the late 70s, but I also went back to her beginnings in the mid-60s with her first albums, and the history of her singing in different joints, cabarets and nightclubs in the bohemian Village area of NYC. She of course went on to play the real life character of Fanny Brice, a vaudeville comedian, in the Broadway stage production of Funny Girl. She brought the house down every night on Broadway, and then they moved the show to London‘s West End, where the crowds couldn’t get enough. She was then given the opportunity to recreate the role in her first ever movie Funny Girl, for which she won the Academy award for Best Actress. I also had the privilege to see Barbra live in concert on January 1, 1994 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, when she first came out of retirement from performing live public shows, after being away from concerts for more than 20 years! She was 52 back then and could still hit all of the high notes ... and it was the single most exciting night of my life. In my opinion, Barbra’s power and voice were at their height in the 1970s. I wanted to share a link to a rare performance of her on a Burt Bacharach TV special, where she sings a duet with… wait for it… herself! I have never heard of any other artist singing a duet with themselves. But through some pre-taping of live vocals, they were able to pull it off, even with the limited technology back in the early 70s. It’s an amazing combination of two songs, “One Less Bell to Answer” w/ “A House is Not a Home”. (both songs composed by Bacharach with his writer partner of the time, Hal David). It’s a great tearjerker song about the loss of a love, and you just won’t believe Barbra’s passionate live performance, up close and personal. I hope you enjoy it!
