The ballad "Barbara Allen" exists in distinct traditions from both England and Scotland. It was referenced as early as 1666, with the implication that it existed long before. The song continued to undergo the folk process when it arrived in North America. This arrangement is based on one of the North American variants, a version based on the one featured in the film “Songcatcher.” I took the liberty of smoothing out a few "crooked" edges to give it more of a rolling rhythm. :-)
Arrangements of this song are included in my book and DVD set “Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers.” You can learn more about this set at my website: www.jessicacom...

Thank you so much, Tull! I originally developed this arrangement on the piano and had been struggling to transfer it over to the dulcimer and couldn't quite accomplish it with standard flatpicking, but now that I've been working with fingerpicking more often, I'm discovering many new possibilities! I am very grateful to Tom A. for encouraging me in my early dulcimer journeys; he made so many opportunities possible for me and inspired me to explore...

I've played violin, bass and in later life the autoharp. At this writing I am awaiting delivery of the mountain dulcimer I ordered and have subscribed to several channels, including yours. I really like your playing and hope to learn from it.

Someimes I find that it is easier to give a song more nuance when I use fingerpicking rather than flatpicking... I’m glad you enjoyed my song, Jeff! Thank you for listening... :-)

VERY nice, Jessica! I really like your choice of "color chords" in this arrangement - they really fit the tune beautifully. btw, I'm sure that somehow/somewhere, Tom A. is listening to this with a huge smile on his face!

I was wondering how you would interpret this song! Thank you. Are your dulcimers built as 3 string or do you just leave one off? What gauge strings do you prefer (.010” for the high)?

You’re welcome, trackie! Yes, I prefer three strings since I find that arrangement works better for flatpicking and fingerpicking... You are correct; I like .010 for the high (.010 inches for the treble string, .014 inches for the middle, and .023 inches for the bass).
