Barclays bank animated adverts. A sailor is persuaded by a tattoo artist to go to Barclays. Barclays Savings Account is a girl's best friend. Henry is told to join a big bank by his therapist. All your problems will be solved by joining Barclays bank.
1. Set in a tattooist shop (this can be read backwards in the door in the background). Designs can be seen on the wall. The tattooist is a small, bespectacled man. The customer whose chest he is currently tattooing is a large, heavy-set man wearing a sailor's hat. The tattooist hums as he works. When he finishes the picture, a heart, he steps back proudly. The client, a cockney with a broken nose, is outraged and demands more embellishments, "roses, bluebirds and 'Brenda I love you'". The tattooist informs him that "colours is extra". The sailor picks up the tattooist and shakes him until his teeth rattle. He sits back down, the threat having been made, and waits for the tattooist to continue. The sailor mutters about civilians and not having enough money. The tattooist suggests that the customer give him a cheque. The sailor has no bank. The tattooist steps away from the customer and chuckles. He tells the sailor to go to Barclays. The sailor looks down at his tattoo, which reads, "Go to Barclays". The sailor exclaims, "that's not how you spell Brenda". (tee hee)
2. White background. A secretary with a large white bouffant hairstyle sits at a typewriter looking glum. A colleague approaches and asks her what is wrong. First woman tells her that "it's Sylv, she's gone and got herself engaged". She starts crying into a handkerchief. Picture fades into Sylv's face as first woman explains that her intended is the "Right honourable Frederick Fitzlightly, there'll be 22 bridesmaids at the wedding and an avenue of swords". As she speaks, we see images representing these things - Frederick is wearing a suit of armour etc... Cut back to two women in office from different perspective. First woman is still crying. She narrates the story of how the couple met while on holiday. We see Sylv on an inflatable animal, and Frederick appears from under the water, wearing snorkeling gear. He smiles. The two women stand outside the Hotel Splendide. Sylv goes inside, leaving the narrator to walk to a dark and dingy hotel marked 'pensions'. See Sylv and "the honourable Fred" seated at a restaurant table. He produces a large engagement ring which he places on her hand. The narrator moans that she doesn't know how Sylv can afford it. Sylv produces a Barclays Savings Account book and proudly announces that it's a girl's best friend. We see this in yellow script on a red background. The account book is on the right of the frame in closeup.
3. White screen with small animated man, smartly dressed and carrying an umbrella, walking across. The narrator announces that everything about Henry is small. He arrives at a crowded pub and is considerably shorter than all the other patrons. Close-up of still photo of a dark-haired model. Pan back to reveal that this is an advert for Nice. Henry reaches up to a nearby counter and orders his holiday ticket - a daytrip to Little Hampton. Narrator tells us that the only big thing in his life is... Edith. See a large woman in a floral dress, aggressively dusting a houseplant. She moves the plant pot away to reveal Henry smiling up at her. She ignores him and moves off. Henry on psychiatrists chair. He lies down, looking miserable. The therapist warbles on incoherently until he has the brainwave that Henry must "join a big bank". The Union Jack and the Barclays crest are displayed on the screen. White screen with Henry strolling across, as the beginning , but now he is happy. He produces a large Barclays chequebook and ruffles the pages. Edith appears and clutches him to her bosom. They leave together. Red screen with the Barclays logo and the slogan, "money is our business".
