yeah didn't film, Ganesh almost cried telling me to stop and to turn it around.dont do it often, but kinda had no choice we committed and there was no going back. 50-60km winds were offshore, gusting that day, 40km nominal.40km in that last video as I was filming. yeah float switch back up pimp is definitely a good idea!!!! I was literally minutes away from that band new 670c sinking while docked.

I wouldn't buy a boat for self draining specifically.... If the boat I actually wanted had it, cool. If not doesn't worry me. Been doing this for over 30 years and haven't needed one

Get a surtees, bar crusher stole their ideas then cut corners.

Start with a smaller 2nd hand boat. Stick to fine weather days, and sheltered waterways to keep within what the boat and your skill level can handle. Second hand boats retain a lot of their value. Then when you have more cash you can upgrade, but in the meantime you'll be able to be out on the water enjoying yourself. Plus you'll have a better idea of the sorts of things you actually want in your dream boat. Just because this guy loves offshore fishing doesn't mean you will.

The bunk is not water tight as in it leak from the top ? Or because there is no step up seperate the front bunk area and the back deck ? Cheers

Yeah agree. The 730 and 780 is a much deeper sides, larger volume boat so they can have self draining and maintain stability

@@BaitBallin Oh yeah in that size range they can accommodate to allow for it but plate boats have always suffered from being light compared to glass in the same size range so they become very unstable if they design them with anything over 21 degrees deadrise, they just become too buoyant whereas glass boats are heavier and bite the sea a bit deeper to get the chines in...It's another reason why the side coaming or topsides are so wide on good plate designs to keep passengers more central in the cockpit for stability.

i believe the smaller crushers don't have it due to what I have mentioned, wouldn't be enough freeboard left. also perhaps it would raise the centre of gravity too much unpacking stability in the smaller ones. the 730 and 780 barcrushers are MUCH bigger volume boats so they can make it work easily.

There are other ways water can get in to your boat than over the side and on top of the deck. As this guy experienced, a bilge pump gives you precious time to work out and enact a plan before your boat sinks. What if some stray electrical current corrodes some holes below deck while you're out camping? Or a bigger stronger boat crashes in to you at speed while you're asleep at anchor? Or any number of other ways water can get in. A bilge pump offers an option for returning to properly floating after plugging the hole(s), which the pump can give you the time needed to do so. I know plate boats are tough but they are not invincible.

transoms and floors old, broken seats out of floors near new, stress cracks all over boat near new, bolts and things falling off all of them. Many of our glass boats had as little as 620mm down the back. late model Haines hunters, Cruise crafts the works. Many have plenty of freeboard, like the Alison's I owned. but some don't. But things constantly fell off nearly all of them. Minor, but just mainly annoying tbh and no that's not the reason I have gone plate. This boat while not at soft a glass boat, I just hose it, kick it a few times for good measure and it's done.

we have re built numerous floors and transoms and have had / seen 5 year old glass boats with signs of rot. thats why my last few were Allison's with no wood under the floor at all, many brands are doing this now which is very good.

I'd say it's because the 730 and 780 are much much larger boats (much deeper in sides) plus wider. freeboard on 670 would be too low with self draining deck, could even impact stability on 670 and below due to raised centre of gravity. those would be my guesses anyway....and yes having 1 or even 2 bilge pumps is obviously critical

and no affiliation with BC at all, don't even know if they watch any of my videos and they probably wouldn't like several of them.

If you 50k's off shore and your bilge fails potentially common sense being you shouldn't be out that far without a secondry back up. Serious off shore trailer boats say like the 233 formula's don't all come with self draining decks, pretty sure that it is an optional extra. If one becomes stranded 50k's off shore with no power at all to run a bilge it may be a problem, but for self draining deck to work adequately (with exception of bigger commercial fishing boats) the boat needs to be up on the plane to work at their full potential. Both have advantages and disadvantages, I've owed boats with both, can't say I'd prefer either, but I wouldn't go out of my way to install them if they weren't factory standard. Mored boats and commercial fishers I think it is essential, recreational trailer boats probably not so much.

100% agree mate. very few fibreglass serious offshore offshore trailer boats even have them, self draining decks have nothing to do with being a serious offshore boat. it's just one way of getting water out of the boat. Been offshore hundreds of times, with one bilge pump. check operation before every trip, no dramas. a second one wouldn't hurt though.

@@BaitBallin Like your vids - you touched on the real issue - how much water does anyone's boat take on or is at risk of taking on and answer really initially depends on design. We had a plate 6.2m centre console and were in close trawling when a wave popped on a sandbar. I was in standing in bow looking over stern and it broke over my head and literally filled the boat - down the stern water initially went over gunnels and the comment was it was like watching the bathtub drain it went out that fast (two scuppers about 8"x5"). No average pump works that fast or that reliably. There are also some rigs that easily can take them over the stern backing up (esp with tilt not adjusted).It's a personal preference but if you've had a scare I reckon you become convert and if you have one you're not at the mercy of electrics - you run a great BC rig but the majority of boats probably aren't as new or polished and some only have one battery (I know - why would anyone?).
