I had the same reaction - heard so munch negativity about this play. But directed and acted well (like by the RSC), it is interesting - subtle, clever, funny, ironic, realistic, ambiguous in the right spots. Sexual politics, marriage, honesty, how the opposite sexes uses and abuse each other. War, social class, identity, seeing ourselves in a true light. Maybe people don’t like the play because the mirror works too well.

The fine 1980 BBC TV version is on Internet Archive. It is strange that people favor Helena. Not once but twice she traps Bertram into being her "husband". She is determined to have her will in the face of his loathing, and no matter how things are, that means "all's well that ends well", she got her way. Of course he proves himself to be a bad one by the end of the play anyway. The best you can say is that the two deserve each other, and of course Prof. Budra is right to say this is one awful pairing with no future.
